Holy shit. She got invited to do the theme song for the most recent season of Outlander, and she nailed it. Was just telling my wife about her pope photo incident just this week. So young.
I guess at least she lived long enough to be vindicated for the reason she was cancelled.
That had to be both infuriating and a relief, to some degree. Her career was destroyed/damaged for no good reason. So personally I’d be livid but at the same time, the see, I was right, had to feel kinda oddly good.
Yeah, there are people that still say the earth is flat, cheetosupreme won the election, and we never landed on the moon, doesn’t make them any less stupid. They will never accept reality so their opinion is irrelevant imo.
The people back then, that didn’t really know what the Catholic Church was up to, are wildly different than now. It was a lot easier for them to keep shit hidden back then. And they had enough control, even then, to make sure anyone that stood up was “cancelled”.
I don’t remember what year it happened but I remember it happening, vividly. And I also remember the swift rebuttal by famous people and the church alike demonizing her, which people didn’t know much better than to go along with and believe. It was a teenage against everyone basically.
She led a difficult life and clearly dealt with emotional issues throughout it, from being a troubled youth, to someone who was never entirely comfortable with her fame, to most recently the loss of her son (I think he was 17?). Sadly, and it bothers me to say this, I won’t be surprised if it is announced that she took her own life.
She was an INCREDIBLE talent. “The Lion and the Cobra” which had Mandinka and “I Want Your (Hands On Me)” were staples of college radio when the album came out. Most of us know her for her cover of Prince’s “Nothing Compares 2 U” but her original work was nothing short of amazing.
I remember Joe Pesci was the SNL host the next week and told the audience he would have assaulted her if he was there when she did it. I have always been confused both by his statement and by the audience’s subsequent laughter. And then within a few years, everyone found out she was right and her career never recovered.
You're Wrong About did a really nice piece on her just in April, going over the history, the controversy that got her cancelled before "cancelling" was even a thing everyone talked about (because she protested the Catholic Church's sex abuse in Ireland before the Spotlight stories were even a thing), and just generally her life story: https://yourewrongabout.buzzsprout.com/1112270/12624780-sinead-o-connor-with-allyson-mccabe
Worth a listen if you like that kind of thing. She was an amazing person that got repeatedly done dirty by the industry and cultural zeitgeist and this death is a tragedy.
He also wasn’t found “innocent”, but “not guilty”.
There’s a vast difference between that. Not guilty means that we can’t prove he’s guilty beyond reasonable doubt, not that we can prove that he’s innocent.
It’s still very likely he committed crimes, but we can’t be sure enough to send him to jail.
Came here to say this! With all we’ve heard about the man, I’d say he’s slam-dunk “not innocent”. BUT, he was found not guilty as charged.
People really get up in arms because they don’t know the difference. And it’s not just some legal shenanigans, it’s a real-world thing.
Another example is my sleezebag Congressman, Matt Gaetz. People act like he wasn’t prosecuted due to being in Congress, money, whatever. No, he wasn’t prosecuted due to lack of evidence and witness testimony.
Is he an innocent man? Fuck no. But that’s not enough to lock him up. Given the nature of the case, I wouldn’t have prosecuted either. About zero chance of a jury returning a guilty verdict. Pretty sad about it, I really hoped to see that man in orange.
When Depp won against Heard, Reddit went full on circle jerk around Depp. Sure his ex was an abusive fuck, but that doesn’t excuse Depp’s horrendous actions and his general creepyness. Dude is 60 chasing after 20 year olds and complains when they’re immature. His ex may have been worse than him, but he’s still an abusive creep.
Just a small correction. Being not proven guilty doesn’t proves innocence. It just means that the accusation couldn’t be proven in court. That’s the price we pay for our justice system which tries to keep wrong convictions as small as possible, quite a few guilty people will walk free.
And I think in this case a guilty person walks free.
No. But with these many accusations I really don’t need that to make an educated guess.
So when a certain number of accusations against a person is reached that makes the accusations true? Funny logic … so at what number of accusations do they magically turn from being just accusations to being the truth?
And nothing prevents me from doing so since I can’t do shit about that fucker beside not watching his movies.
You really think he gives a shit if you watch his movies? Cute but please keep in mind the dude is super fucking rich and his estimated worth is about 70.000.000$.

No, but much more likely.

Do you have proof these accusations were false? Remember, a not guilty verdict only means the evidence presented was insufficient for a conviction, and does not mean the accusations were not real.
But in the case the original user clearly stated it was their opinion, not a fact. Individuals are allowed to have opinions of another person’s guilt, even if it differs from that of a jury.
Ah yes, the singer Conservatives canceled long before the same Conservatives started crying about being canceled for doing what she was protesting about and got canceled for.
Humans are so fucking stupid, in general. We deserve to be replaced by something better. It won’t be long. The planet appears to be winding up for another cycle & honestly I can’t fucking wait.
I’ve seen a surprising number of people on Lemmy with this depressing attitude. Not all humans deserve to die just because those in power don’t give a shit about the environment. And unfortunately, we’re not the only ones that will end up dying off. We’ll be taking a massive chunk of the planet with us.
