The US has gone completely crazy.

This is great to see.

My biggest complaint about Democrats has always been their lack of balls, and weird cultish insistence that they always take the “high road” and try to work with Republicans in good faith.

moneyinphx , in Wisconsin’s Democratic governor guts Republican tax cut, increases school funding for 400 years

Finally the Democrats are fighting fascism with pettiness!

There’s no pettiness here. The changes he made are very good, positive help for our state, whereas veto of the entire budget would have been a disaster.

MicroWave OP , in Philly leaders sue ghost gun manufacturers just days after mass shooting
@MicroWave@lemmy.world avatar

According to the city’s lawsuit, “So-called ‘ghost guns’ – home-assembled, unserialized, and untraceable firearms that are sold and purchased without regard to firearm regulations – have become the weapon of choice for those seeking to evade firearm laws. Unsurprisingly, the number of ghost guns recovered at crime scenes has skyrocketed in recent years.”

peaceful Black Lives Matter protest

@Dong64@lemmy.world avatar

Just wanted to clarify, I assume you’re being sarcastic? You believe every Black Lives Matter protest was a violent affair? Because that’s pretty verifiably false. Not to mention, not the crux of this article.

This article is about how the FBI lied in court about its social media monitoring capabilities. If you want to spout off unverified theories about how every protest was violent, you could make your own post/community. You could also try actually contributing to the discussion, but of course you don’t have to.

Bipta ,

I went to BLM protests and felt unsafe... because of the right wingers who approached me obviously hoping for violence.

Another proud moment for Christianity

dragonflyteaparty , in Texas woman traumatized after being forced to carry an unviable pregnancy to term

Absolutely deplorable. I feel so terrible for those women. What an awful thing to go through. Even if a pregnancy goes well, it’s still incredibly hard. It’s also likely that the twin only lived because they selectively reduced the twin pregnancy in another state.

The argument against them is ridiculous. That it was really doctors who failed them? How? What’s the logic in that? It’s impossible to detect these birth defects before six weeks pregnant. We don’t have the technology for it. But it’s not fatal for the birth parent, so Texas doesn’t care.

That their case should be dismissed because they had a “go fund me”? This one really gets me. How does a “go fund me” negate the actions of the state? Or is the logic really “they got money and they’re only doing this for money?”

braxy29 ,

But it’s not fatal for the birth parent, so Texas doesn’t care.

even worse, even when it’s fatal a lot of medical professionals are now afraid to act until something is IMMEDIATELY fatal in texas. you’ve got women suffering, waiting for a predictable medical disaster, hospitals telling them “come back when you’re septic” and won’t do anything before then.

I like how the interviewee remarked on his concerns for the younger union members.

I imagine the Teamsters are too large and too savvy to go for a new contract that creates a two-tier system of new members with a crappier package than senior members. They should know that would be a death spiral for union membership.

Just as Texas intended

Sacrifices must be made up appease the religious extremist voter base

PeterPoopshit ,

You have to remember more than half the people in Texas vote for this shit while believing they live in the most free place in the world. Should freedom mean the freedom to take away other people’s freedom or should it mean the freedom to do what you want?

The takeaway from this is if you live someplace like this the average person is not your friend. Get out while you still can.

MeetInPotatoes ,

6 Catholics overturned Roe too. Catholics only represent 23% of the population and tend to have much stricter views on abortion than Jewish and Hindu folks for instance. Maybe we shouldn’t let 6 people from the same freaking religion decide anything with religious overtones. But if we do, and in the case of abortion…maybe it shouldn’t be the people that think Jesus got magically beamed into Mary’s womb from orbit.

DarthBueller ,

To correct you and also amplify the irony: Roe was overturned by 6 Catholic justices whose views on abortion diverge greatly from the 64% of American Catholics and 40% of American Catholic Republicans that believe that abortion should be legal in most or all cases.

Robocopsicle , in US Supreme Court blocks student loan forgiveness plan

This quote from Pence is so unbelievably infuriating.

Joe Biden’s massive trillion-dollar student loan bailout subsidizes the education of elites on the backs of hardworking Americans

Good to know all of the millennial and gen z college graduates earning less than $125,000 per year and struggling in an awful economy are “elites” and not “hardworking Americans.”

Since I’m now apparently an elite, do I get a membership card in the mail?

huge_clock ,

Although the language is very imprecise, a university graduate will make $720,000 more over a 20 year period than a non-university graduate, spend four years out of the labour force not paying taxes and then will also have a higher life expectancy drawing from the public pension longer.

Tell me why it’s reasonable for people who didn’t go to university to help foot the bill for people who did?

Robocopsicle ,

This is the exact type of resentment members of the GOP are trying to sow among marginally different income brackets to promote infighting rather than pointing the finger at the actual “elite” class. You shouldn’t have to be saddled with massive amounts of debt to simply get an education. Adjusted for inflation, college tuition has increased nearly 750% since 1963. Source.

Why not tax the rich to pay for programs to support the lower and middle classes? Or subsidize education?

a university graduate will make $720,000 more over a 20 year period than a non-university graduate

That $720,000 difference over 20 years is less than a one-year salary for thousands of CEOs. Based on this list, there are 2,721 CEOs who earned more than $720,000 in 2021 (you have to scroll all the way down to page 137 to find a CEO earning less than $720,000).

It’s a drop in the bucket.

spend four years out of the labour force not paying taxes and then will also have a higher life expectancy drawing from the public pension longer.

If university grads earn more, wouldn’t their higher tax contributions quickly make up for the four non-tax-paying years compared to someone earning less without a degree? Not to mention it isn’t uncommon for students to also work while in college.

Regarding life expectancy, this is the same blame-game criticism. What impact would affordable healthcare have on life expectancy? Or a higher minimum wage?

Tell me why it’s reasonable for people who didn’t go to university to help foot the bill for people who did?

You could make the same argument for any type of program that distributes tax dollars to others. “Why should my hard-earned money go to someone sitting at home on welfare?”

The federal government clearly has no problem throwing obscene amounts of money at corporations, whether they need it or not, so why not divert some of that aid to the people?

When I took out my student loans, I knew what I was signing up for, and I never expected — or wanted – the government to step in and waive them. After seeing the massive amounts of money the government handed out in the form of PPP funds, including potentially $200 billion fraudulently (source), my view changed. If billionaires were getting PPP loans for millions of dollars, why shouldn’t a bunch of college graduates get $20,000 each?

Would you rather your tax money go to reducing student debt or $2 million to $5 million to Kanye West’s Yeezys? Or Tom Brady’s TB12 getting nearly $1 million?

It’s obviously not an actual either-or question, but ultimately, if the government is bailing out billionaires, banks, etc., then yeah, fuck it, help your middle class college graduates.

huge_clock ,

There aren’t enough CEOs to tax to make up the $400 billion it would cost for the student loan forgiveness.

That was the core reason it was struck down. It fell afoul of the Equal Protections Clause. You can’t treat people differently based on their skin color.
