I've seen this happen so many times and it's always so embarrassing. There's a lovely template that you can slap onto an article that says something along the lines of "this article appears to have been edited by someone with a close association with the subject." It's truly a marvel in how close it skates towards saying, "the subject of this bio didn't like parts of what people were saying, so they edited it to suit themselves" without saying exactly that. It's subtly brutal.

Fortunately for the feelings of people who edit their own wiki bios, I suspect that they probably don't feel the sense of shame that I would if I were in that position.

ChicoSuave ,

They’re the type of person who is upset they get caught and apologizes of they upset someone but not for their actual transgression.

Ddhuud ,

I’m sorry that you feel like I hurt you…

grue ,

Why use that template when you could revert the self-serving edits instead?

i love watching him try to hang onto the inside of the bowl, as he is slowly swirling down

athos77 , in The Ukraine War might really break up the Russian Federation

The interesting part to me is that the article is talking about a reduced Russia centered around St. Petersburg, Moscow and Nizhny Novgorod, all of which are in the Western part of Russia. I could see China eying any splintered territories in their area for annexation "stabilization". And I could see some of those territories deciding that it's better to stick with an imperialistic Russia than it would be to get "subdued" by China.

Ubermeisters , in Montana judge rules in favor of youth in historic climate change lawsuit

A judge in Montana ruled on Monday that the state violated the state constitutional rights of 16 young people by promoting the use of fossil fuels and ignoring the effects of greenhouse gas emissions, which cause global warming and climate change. The ruling, a historic first in the U.S. for environmental law, could influence thousands of other pending climate change lawsuits in the country.

Fredselfish ,
@Fredselfish@lemmy.world avatar

How long until this gets appealed to Scotus who rules that young people can go fuck themselves?

Our government is owned by powerful interests who dont care they are killing us and our youth.

Changetheview ,

An appeal is likely, but this is still a big W. It immediately invalidates laws prohibiting the consideration of emissions. Even if it gets knocked down by higher courts, it will likely have some impact in the immediate term (allowing people to bring up emissions concerns when energy permits are going through approval right now).

And more importantly, it might pave a way for future change. The first attempt down a new path might not get all the way to the end, but it might have a lasting impact in other ways. And this one just jumped over the first big hurdle.

Congrats to this pretty bad ass group of young ones.

GiddyGap OP ,

These cases are such a double-edged sword, because they risk being taken up by Trump’s SCOTUS. If they rule against based on the majority’s antiquated worldview, it will leave the US, and especially younger generations, in severe danger for a very long time.

Changetheview ,

I can see where you’re coming from, but we can’t stop fighting for fear of court rulings.

Courts are only there to interpret laws. A determined legislature should be able to overcome poor court interpretations through enacting laws.

For example, Dobbs v. Jackson (stripping abortion protections) only nullified Roe v. Wade. Congress could still protect/prohibit abortion rights with the stroke of a pen. Of course, the legislature’s obvious dysfunction is a problem that must be factored in. But I’d also factor in growing resentment in the Supreme Court with each asinine ruling akin to Dobbs they have to make. Make no mistake about it, that enraged and fueled a lot of opposition. Enough of that could lead to stacking the court.

In this particular case, it seems to be a state issue, so it’s pretty unlikely to make it to the fed Supreme Court anyway. And at least it means that people who likely would be using legal resources for other nefarious means are tied up trying to overturn this one.

Exactly seen this basic title for Trump for years. Why “incert crime here” will doom Trump yet nothing happens to him.

athos77 ,

Plus it's Georgia. What are the chances there isn't one Fox-addict on the jury?

aseriesoftubes ,

I mean, the jury selection selection process is supposed to weed out anyone who is obviously biased in any direction.

Also—and I realize this undermines my first point—Fulton County is one of the most reliably Democratic counties in the country.

jdsquared ,

Because it’s Fulton county. That makes a huge difference.

I hope this doesn’t make me regret opposing Milton County.

kimchi_boy ,

Oh how I’d love to see him in jail, but I just can’t see this happening to a former US president. I’d imagine house arrest at a maximum, unfortunately.

afraid_of_zombies ,

It’s a bit nuts how untouchable we have made this position be. I read that even George Washington noticed it out and tried to reign it in. Maybe if there was a way to get rid of presidents based on no confidence or something it wouldn’t have morphed into what it is now.

rapscallion , in Bankman-Fried heads to Brooklyn jail notorious for poor conditions

SBF would still be on relatively lenient house arrest at his parent’s lovely Palo Alto home but he violated pretrial rules so many times (using forbidden encrypted communication channels, constantly giving interviews, manipulating witnesses) that he absolutely deserves being sent to jail. It’s an open question whether he’s been such a jackass out of some weird compulsion or as a desperate legal strategy. I guess we’ll find out at his trial.

Tolstoshev , in (Wisconsin) Supreme Court Justice Rebecca Bradley has been quietly editing her own Wikipedia page

That’s silly - judges are supposed to have clerks to do that for them.

Brkdncr ,

I’m more concerned that a judge didn’t have a clerk do this. Judges should be half-decent at delegating tasks.

ArtieShaw ,

In 2009-ish my local US House rep had his bio edited from an office in the Capitol building. Repeatedly, in fact. I've always wondered it was done by him or an intern.

Based on the blisteringly dumb things he'd say in public, and the fact that he was one of the vanishingly small minority of Republicans to get redistricted out of his very safe seat in Ohio by his own party - I'm betting that he did it on his own time. Not that I think his "retirement" had anything to do with the Wikipedia bio. It's just something that would fit with his ideas of "having a cunning plan."

reddig33 , in Bankman-Fried heads to Brooklyn jail notorious for poor conditions

Sad that this country is proud of its “poor conditions” in prisons.

Kbobabob ,

Where are you getting this information from? Most people i communicate with say we need prison reform.

kttnpunk , in More states expect schools to keep trans girls off girls teams as K-12 classes resume
@kttnpunk@lemmy.world avatar

As a trans person, sports are inherently unequal, unfair and some people do have biological advantages. If Micheal Phelps can use his freak lungs and webbed feet in the fucking OLYMPICS why can’t a young trans girl compete at a goddamn h.s meet? People only seem to care when it’s a trans person, but rules can impact cis people as well. Plenty of born cis women have excess testosterone and have even been banned from sporting events in the past, ntm the right’s best answer to this perceived problem? introducing genital inspections. Let’s get real, sports are just fucking games. They shouldn’t be taken any more seriously.

girlfreddy ,

Exactly. This whole gd screaming match over what constitutes being a woman has zero basis in science.

If the transphobes would just sit the fuck down and shut the fuck up, that'd be good.
