badbrainstorm , in Texas imprisoned migrants after they should have been released, lawsuit claims

Tejas should get some kind of humanitarian award this year

KnightontheSun ,

I’ve noticed we still seem to need the /s for this.

Zombiepirate ,
@Zombiepirate@lemmy.world avatar

I’ve found that you have to lay on the sarcasm extra thick to have a comment override Poe’s law these days.

I kind of hate tagging things ‘/s,’ but I do get it, especially on the Internet where nuance is lost or people might not speak English as their first language.

badbrainstorm ,
@badbrainstorm@lemmy.world avatar

Sure, if you’re going to sugarcoat it I suppose. I see it as part of reading comprehension and nuanced language skills that the internet and text messages have understandably changed things, for better or worse. It is what it is. This one in particular bums me out, cause I’m badbrainstorm, and a super smartass. I even have my own Ali G type characters in my head that are rediculous af

WolfyGamer29 ,

Well, a lot of people who don’t have good reading comprehension tend to be neurodivergent people, especially autistic folk like myself. I tend to approach things with a benefit of the doubt attitude but I’m more or less “high functioning” and some people have an even harder time understanding social cues via text. I use /s just out of mindfullness of folk who struggle with those kinds of thing.

badbrainstorm ,
@badbrainstorm@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah, okay. I guess with all the xenobiotics and whatnot these things are becoming much more prevalent in society and I should be more understanding. Thanks

MataVatnik , in US seeks to extend longstanding scientific research agreement with China

This is strange, considering China already has a policy of embedding and recruiting scientist for siphoning away scientific research.

Tedesche , in Jailed WSJ reporter Evan Gershkovich’s arrest is extended by a Moscow court, state news agency says

I realize we can’t just stop sending reporters to Russia, but damn… I don’t know why anyone from the U.S. would travel to Russia when Putin is using incarceration as a means of bullying the U.S. into prisoner swaps.

Also, I’m going to take the opportunity to revive the complaint that Britney Griner was incredibly privileged to get rescued the way she was, the trade was not worth it, and there are other U.S. citizens languishing in Russian prisons that aren’t being rescued simply because they aren’t making headlines the way Griner did. Her fame was the only reason she got out and it’s totally unfair.

awwwyissss ,

Yeah. The US traded a basketball player who made a dumb decision for a warlord. Not a good trade.

SeaJ ,

More of a lord of war. Wasn’t he also due to be released soon anyway?

awwwyissss ,

Yeah thanks much better term, he was an arms dealer. I’m not sure when he was due to be released.

Looking back, I guess he returned to Russia and helped them prepare to invade Ukraine m

I think it was a reference to the movie based on him, called Lord Of War.

awwwyissss ,

I know Lord of War but didn’t know it was based on him, interesting

Fisk400 , in Mum calls out system over baby-faced rapist's light sentence

The headline is burying the lead a bit by not saying that the girl was twelve when she was raped. It is not some kid that didn’t understand consent properly. It is a proper predator that groomed a child online and raped her.

dublet ,

Excellent point.

burying the lead

It’s “burying the lede” though.

Fisk400 ,

wtf is a lede?

Tavarin ,
@Tavarin@lemmy.ca avatar

The opening sentence of a paragraph or news article, typically summarizing the important aspects of the story.

DessertStorms ,
@DessertStorms@kbin.social avatar

I understand the point you're trying to make, but it could have been made without this

It is not some kid that didn’t understand consent properly

victim blaming bullshit.

Rape victims, especially those who reached court (which is almost none, so if they have it means it's a strong case) no matter their age, are not "kids who don't understand about consent".

rebelsimile ,

I think the sentence is referring to the rapist, not the victim (in other words it wasn’t some 18 year old who was with his 17 year old girlfriend)

DessertStorms ,
@DessertStorms@kbin.social avatar

Ok, so it isn't victim blaming, it's excuse making - rape is rape, not, again, "kids who don't understand about consent".

That comment is 100% unnecessary, and however you look at it, all it is is minimizing what rape is.

Zorque ,

So two sixteen year old kids having sex is the same as this?

Johanno ,

If at least one of them didn’t consent. Yes.

And I don’t know at what age you are legally able to consent to sex, but before that there is legally no difference

rebelsimile ,

Why can’t anyone ever say “Oh I read that wrong, sorry about that”?

utopianfiat , in APNews: Fukushima's radioactive wastewater is being released in the Pacific.

Nothingburger. “Slightly radioactive” - literally half the planet is “slightly radioactive”. We pump more radiation into the atmosphere by burning coal than we ever have by splitting uranium atoms.

Emperor ,
@Emperor@feddit.uk avatar

They had an expert on the radio explaining why it’s not an issue - the interviewer asked if he’d drink the water and he said yes, but he might be the wrong person to ask, as he’s swum in the cooling tanks at Chernobyl.

The Chinese are getting their knickers in twist about it but their nuclear reactors release far more radioactive water into the Pacific and that’s all within safe limits. Most of the fuss seems to be political or just arising from ignorance (or both).

SheeEttin ,

Yeah. And I hate that the media is covering the “controversy” instead of the facts.

Emperor ,

Indeed, it’s the age-old story - politics exploiting ignorance.

shellac ,

It may be fine but the issue as I understand it is Japan isn’t being totally transparent about their testing or allowing outside inspection.

Emperor ,
@Emperor@feddit.uk avatar

I haven’t heard anything about that - the IAEA is happy, as are South Korea and all the experts I’ve heard speak on the matter. Japan’s environment ministry has also been sampling sea water after the release and will give the results on Sunday. Everything seems.to be on working to keep the tritium at levels significantly lower levels than the WHO safe levels (and well below the levels in waste water from other nuclear power plants, including China).

ryathal , in Fukushima wastewater released into the ocean, China bans all Japanese seafood

Does that mean China will stop fishing in those waters too?

zephyreks ,

Does China even fish in Japanese waters?

Mindlight ,

There is a risk I’m wrong but… I’m pretty sure that if something is released into the Japanese part of the Pacific ocean it’s not contained within the Japanese borders…

zephyreks ,

Correction: does China fish near the Fukushima side of Japanese waters?

Fosheze ,

China constantly fishes in other countries waters. It got so bad that Argentina has just started sinking their ships caught illegally fishing in their waters.

businessinsider.com/chinese-fishing-vessels-going…

lemann ,

A little shitty by Argentina due to the risk of life IMO but I don’t blame them

Fosheze ,

They weren’t left with much of a choice. They would hail the illegal fishing boats and the boats would just book it back to international waters, wait for the Argentinian boats to leave then immediately go back and start fishing again. These fishing boats were turning off their transponders right before crossing into Argentinian waters, it’s isn’t like they didn’t know exactly what they were doing. If you continously knowingly and deliberately violate a countries borders then you should really expect to be shot at.

zephyreks ,

That wasn’t the question.

FartsWithAnAccent , in Pittsburgh active shooter: What we know about the suspect, William Hardison Sr.

I heard about this earlier: It doesn’t sound like he was an active shooter at all. It sounds like he had his home stolen by a shady corporation and fought the police, dying trying to save his home.

Dumb to get into a gun fight for sure, but how exactly was this guy an “active shooter”? Am I missing something here?

utopianfiat , in Mum calls out system over baby-faced rapist's light sentence

The judge’s rationale is that he’d be victimized because of his appearance. If the justice system can’t trust itself not to allow extrajudicial punishment by other inmates enough to give people the sentences they deserve, isn’t that their fucking problem and not the victims’?

Fredselfish ,
@Fredselfish@lemmy.world avatar

Exactly this fuck should get the 20 fucking yesrs or at minimum the 6. He will reoffend and thanks to that stupid judge it will be soon.

utopianfiat ,

And he’s still going to have a babyface the second time he rapes a kid, what’ll they do then?

Fredselfish ,
@Fredselfish@lemmy.world avatar

It could have that babyface all his life depending on genetics. The judges take was fucking dumb. Besides I hear they protect pedos in prison because no matter how they look they will get fucked up.

So all this judge did was hurt the victim. Shame on him.

BadAdvice ,

Judge should join him tbh. Incompetence like that cannot be tolerated. Start throwing these chucklefucks in prison for judicial misconduct. It starts with abolishing qualified AND absolute immunity.

dan1101 ,

I re-save any pictures I post online in a very old image editing program that strips the metadata. It’s a hassle but I think worth it.

LanternEverywhere ,

Fyi there are apps and online tools just for removing metadata. Also many sites (but not all) automatically remove metadata from uploaded images. For example imgur does that. But if your way works and is no hassle then keep on keepin on.

dan1101 ,

Yeah mainly just remembering to remove the metadata is the hassle. Upload sites might say they do it but I will never 100% trust that they don’t keep some part of it.
