girlfreddy OP , in Trump fraud trial live updates: Ivanka testifies at New York court - BBC News

Ivanka Trump has been shown multiple documents and emails.

She has used a few variations of answers - either she does not recall, or “it appears so”.

Sometimes Ivanka mentions she recalls the state showing her these documents in previous meetings.

Judge Engoron at one point says: “That could have been a simple yes”.

Ivanka has also been asking to read the documents more than other witnesses were.

The prosecution has asked her if she has any reason to doubt the accuracy of the presented documents and emails. For the most part, she has said no.

Ace0fBlades , in Why Wisconsin didn’t issue an Amber Alert for missing 5-year-old later found dead

It looks like amber alerts in WI require a possible suspect and vehicle description involved in the disappearance, which the family didn’t have.

That said, you could broadcast the description of the child and rough area in which they were missing I suppose.

JustZ ,
@JustZ@lemmy.world avatar

That’s true of Amber Alerts everywhere. The purpose is to find a fleeing abductor right away. It also requires a basis to believe the child is in danger, so you would not usually see Amber Alerts in cases of a parent abduction, absent some known threat.

originalucifer ,
@originalucifer@moist.catsweat.com avatar

almost 100% of the amber alerts ive looked into it was one of the parents 'abducting' their own kid.

but that information is irrelevant as that person is also most likely to harm the child.

JustZ ,
@JustZ@lemmy.world avatar

In those case then the parent had to have been deemed a threat. Maybe they lost custody due to having harmed the child before or for being unable to care for the child. Maybe they made threats to hurt the kid.

Not taking about statistical likelihoods. Amber Alerts say “this kid is not just missing, but in danger.”

girlfreddy OP , in Trump fraud trial live updates: Ivanka testifies at New York court - BBC News

Lou Solomon of the attorney general’s office is now showing a 2011 document with proposed terms of a loan from Deutsche Bank for the Doral golf course project in Florida.

The Trumps were seeking a personal wealth management loan, which comes with more favourable rates than commercial real estate loans.

The document states that Donald Trump is the guarantor for the proposed loan, and and that he had to maintain a minimum net worth.

Prosecutors then show an email from Ivanka Trump to then-Trump Organization CFO Allen Weisselberg and others about the loan rates.

She wrote: “It doesn’t get better than this”.

Ivanka tells the court that she did not specifically recall writing or sending that email.

Under questioning, she also said she didn’t recall the proposal, or whether she thought it was good.

The manifesto detailed thoughts Hale had leading up to what was referred to as “DEATH DAY”, as well as a timeline in which the shooting would take place.

Audrey Hale: “Can’t believe I’m doing this, but I’m ready
I hope my victims aren’t.”

Hale: “I hope I have a high death count.”

Hale: “Kill those kids!!!”

Hale: “going to fancy private schools with those fancy khakis + sports backpacks w/ their daddies mustangs + convertibles.”

Hale: “Wanna kill all you little crackers!!! Bunch of little removeds w/ your white privileges”

Hale: There were several times I could have been caught especially b—ack in the summer of 2021

Hale: “It might be 10 minutes tops. It might be 3-7. Its gunna go quick.”

Ivanka Trump is becoming more evasive on the stand

Ivanka Trump appears to very poised, friendly and willing to engage with the attorney general's office during her testimony, but is beginning to become more evasive with her answers.

She smiles and speaks softly, responding politely, but has started to repeat the phrase, "I don't recall," in response to documents being shown to her, including letters and emails she wrote herself.

Chris Kise, one of Trump's attorneys, has also made several objections. Engoron questioned Kise if he was "going to object to every document."

stella , in Homer has stopped strangling Bart in The Simpsons and it’s about time

That’s honestly fair. Times do, indeed, change.

Older episodes can easily be written off as the violent-humor cartoons of the day were known for. Newer episodes don’t have an excuse to making fun of child abuse.

That said, I do wonder if the satirical nature of the Simpsons was supposed to be evident in Homer strangling Bart. It always struck me as something he just ‘did.’ Not really funny or unfunny, just a facet of the show. It’s possible the writers were originally trying to highlight how a dad like Homer might physically discipline his children out of rage while Marge just lets it happen.

Remember, the Simpsons are supposed to be satire.

snooggums ,
@snooggums@kbin.social avatar

The comically exaggerated struggling of Bart is obvious physical comedy.

Not doing it anymore is a good choice though.

Heresy_generator , (edited )
@Heresy_generator@kbin.social avatar

When the Simpsons first came on it was deeply subversive and that era of TV, where things were really opening up beyond the big three networks for the first time, has so fundamentally changed TV programming that people can forget (or younger people can just not understand) what TV was like in the 1980s before insurgents like Fox and MTV changed the landscape.

By the late 1980s the formula, form, and what was socially permitted on TV sitcoms hadn't changed much in 40 years. The Simpsons was a purposeful rejection of all of the 'rules' that sitcoms had followed to that point. A big part of that was the classic TV 'authority figures' who are always right, just, and caring were purposely subverted: the dad is a dumb, self-centered, abusive, alcoholic jerk, the cops are all corrupt and stupid, the teachers hate the children and don't care about their education, the principal is a pathetic loser with delusions of relevance, the mayor is corrupt and womanizing, the preacher just doesn't care at all and wants to be left alone; hell, the children's clown on TV is arguably the most immoral scumbag on the show.

Similarly, Homer strangling Bart was meant as a subversion of the "patient father sits the misbehaving child down for a heart-to-heart where things get resolved" trope of sitcoms of the previous half century; instead dad physically abuses the misbehaving child and nothing is ever resolved. Where TV sitcoms to that point were fantasies about what the best versions of American culture could be, the Simpsons was an over-the-top take down of what our culture actually was.

But, obviously, as the TV culture they were satirizing went away (in no small part because of their show's success) the show needed to change too. In 1989, Homer strangling Bart rather than having a soft-focused heart-to-heart with music rising in the background was unexpected, subversive satire. In 2023 it's just a depiction of child abuse whose original context is long gone. The same show just doesn't work without the cultural context it was created in and meant to lampoon.

bradorsomething ,

Who knew that we lived this long - not as a warning to others, but to explain why the Simpsons used to be funny!

Mirodir ,

While I agree with you and also agree with the decision to not show it anymore, I do want to highlight this bit that you wrote:

instead dad physically abuses the misbehaving child and nothing is ever resolved

The positive thing is that it never (or so raraly that I wouldn’t remember) presented the strangling as anything good or helpful. Instead it was always presented as a shortcoming of his personality. Homer is mentally ill equipped to solve conflicts with Bart non-violently. Strangling him was his only outlet and (at least to attentive viewers) it was clearly and evidently damaging Bart’s development. This is for example demonstrated in a scene where Bart has such a trauma that he’s getting “strangled” by thin air when he thinks his dad would go for it.

Also, with the knowledge that Bart is, to some extent, Matt Groening’s self-insert, that does raise some rather unpleasant questions.

I think satire is possibly too much for the average viewers, especially from the viewpoint of the channel execs.

Ivanka Trump is speaking in hushed tones.

She seems to be choosing her words quite carefully - answering, for the most part, slowly and thoughtfully. She has punctuated some of her answers with a smile.
