fiat_lux , in The top US economist under fire for taking an EU job

Under fire.

The fire in question:

"We fail to understand the consideration of non-EU candidates for such a high-ranking and strategic position, ... We are very concerned about the opposite views she publicly expressed and the potential conflict of interests between her new role and her previous functions with large American tech companies."
"No matter how competent, this is not in our strategic interest,"
"Don't we have excellent economists in the EU?"

Maybe by using violent imagery to describe polite questions and expressions of opinion, we devalue the seriousness of war and cast people asking genuine questions as destructive.

Why does English even have an idiom that equates shooting people with criticism? Do other languages do this?

Sorry for somewhat off topic post, I have no stake in or opinion on her job offer. I just got the shits with figuratively inflammatory language as a mechanism of engaging users in media and then realised it goes culturally even deeper.

Important news, but they gotta start proofreading their articles better:

The city of Phoenix, which has been experiencing temperatures above 109.4F (43C) for 17 days in a row, was granted some modest reprieve on Sunday by a thick cloud cover, which was expected to keep the temperature around 115F (46.1C).

I'm not seeing how an increase from 109 to 115 degrees is a reprieve.

BrikoX OP ,
@BrikoX@lemmy.zip avatar

I think it’s just a weird wording, but not factually wrong. I read that as it would of been higher than 115F but thick cloud cover helped to keep it at that lower temperature.

Kittybeer ,

I live here. 115F with full sun feels worse than 115F with cloud cover.

Koraboros ,

Tygr , in Elon Musk says Twitter cash flow is negative due to ad revenue declines, ‘heavy debt’

You don’t buy a heavily liberal swayed network and flip it heavily conservative. All of your advertisers will have an issue and it takes a long time to bring in new advertisers that like the new direction.

That’s like buying Truth Social and banning Trump.

P.S. I can’t stand Twitter. Never liked it, never will.

ThunderingJerboa ,
@ThunderingJerboa@kbin.social avatar

Hell lets be honest here, I think many advertisers do sway more heavily conservative but the problem is advertisers want stability. Elon basically opened the flood gates to let anything go (as long as he agrees with them) and that created massive change at once. So you have to play the game of pandering to your audience who are likely going to be on the left just due to the left being a far more numerous group and no big advertiser would want an ad anywhere near a racial tirade. Like the higher ups of these corporations can and may be incredibly racist but you don't want your brand associated with it since you basically cut off a sizeable part of your market in the space you are trying to advertise. At the end of the day they want money and they don't want to rock the boat visibly.

Who cares? What a bank does isn’t going to deter me from supporting or opposing what I choose. Every major product or service that you use employs the same level choice across the board, whether you like it or not.

gravitas_deficiency ,

But you can avoid doing business with banks that are more egregiously shitty in this regard. Use a local credit union instead.

GodAwfulHorridSniff ,

That’s true, but that’s not going to stop someone who believes in this to stop going to Starbucks when they try to stop their workers from unionizing, or stop shopping at Amazon even though they underpay and over work their employees. Like if your going to draw a line, either cross it or stay behind it but don’t act like you have a hill to die on because some bank chooses to do something really shitty. Let’s get real here.

Chefdano3 , in A Trooper Issued More than 1,000 Fake Tickets. Connecticut Police Won’t Say Whether He Still Has a Job
@Chefdano3@lemm.ee avatar

Yes, our cops have a heavy bias against black people. It’s pretty obvious if you swap traffic so stories with black people and non black people. Most of those biases result in more traffic fines, and other citations that are technically against the law, but they usually ignore it if you’re not black. Total bullshit, and needs to be addressed.

Them trying to cover it up is a very unsurprising things for our cops to do, with their stupid ass “it’s not our fault black people commit more crimes” metality. But considering how I’ve seen and read about the straight up harassment, abuse, and fatal incidents stared by cops in other states, it could be worse. CT cops are… Well I won’t say good… I’d say they’re like Walmart floor stockers. They spend more time making it seem like they’re doing their job that actually doing it, trying to take as much free shit as they can get away with, and if you ever ask them for help they’re too busy.

If they take this finding, fire the offenders, and use it to tighten up on their obvious racial bias, we might have a semi-passable police force.

… I’m sure they won’t though.

@MicroWave@lemmy.world avatar

The escalating frequency of pickleball injuries has brought concerns about the safety of the popular sport to the forefront. A recent study revealed that approximately 90% of reported cases affected people 50 and older, with sprains and fractures making up nearly half of the injuries.

It’s hard for me to believe the benefits of the increase in exercise are outweighed by the risks of injury. I’d be quite surprised if pickleball didn’t reduce the total cost of medical care.

FormlessMartian ,
@FormlessMartian@lemmy.world avatar

Matthew Lazinski from the University of South Florida School of Physical Therapy & Rehab Sciences, reflecting on the rise in pickleball injuries witnessed in the clinic, emphasizes the potential risks associated with the sport. He asserts that the surge in injuries can be attributed to people embracing an active lifestyle. He said the advantages gained from exercise outweigh the associated costs.

It’s right there in the article.
