Not going to watch, but I’m hoping one of them goes the way of the million dollar baby.

Which way is that?

I’ll find the clip for you, one moment.

Edit: this isn’t the clip, but it’s a parody of what I’m talking about:

inclementimmigrant , in Disapproval of Elon Musk is top reason Tesla owners are selling, survey says

I own and still like the model 3 that I own but I’m not about to sell it just because Elon’s douchecanoe, that’s just dumb. Now I can guarantee that the next EV I get will not be a Tesla though because Musk’s action and values go too counter to my own now.

GodIsNull ,

But the rest of the car industry is fine and dandy?

chic_luke ,

False dychotomy. They’re not stating the rest of the industry is exempt from capitalism, but that they don’t have a loudly fascist-adjacent individual as a leading figure and, if I may add, they have better build quality and reliability than Tesla’s. At this point I have yet to meet in real life one single Tesla user who is happy with their purchase. Long before the Elon and Twitter drama, I recall one of my CS profs talking about their Tesla saying something like “The software and the self-driving features are what make this car valuable on the market, but, taken it as a car, it sucks compared to everything else”

nilloc , (edited )

The way they iterate on production cars means they can have much improved parts as time goes by. But they don’t tell anyone that they’re doing it, and can just as easily fucking yup an iteration and you’d have no idea it’s only on the few hundred or thousand cars made the that same month.

Finding parts is a nightmare and both production speed and treating cars like beta software is making it even worse.

The only thing that makes a used Tesla worth buying is the battery and drivetrain. Parting this parts out to car conversion is already a profitable business. The rest of the car is recycling.

Capitalism has taught me to not do anything unless I am paid. So I won’t be watching this unless I am paid to do so.

MicroWave OP , in Massachusetts couple denied foster care application over LGBTQ views, complaint says
@MicroWave@lemmy.world avatar

A social worker’s report attached to the complaint said the couple was asked how they would feel if a child in their care identified as LGBTQ or struggled with their gender identity. Kitty Burke responded by saying “let’s take the T out of it” and called gender-affirming care “chemical castration,” according to the report. She also said, “I’m going to love you the same,” but that the child “would need to live a chaste life.” Both Kitty and Michael Burke expressed hesitation around using a transgender or nonbinary person’s preferred pronouns, the social worker’s report noted.

Michael Burke told the social worker he’d been to gay weddings and would “likely attend” his child’s wedding if they were LGBTQ, according to the report, and the couple said they wouldn’t kick a child out of their home for being LGBTQ or subject them to conversion therapy

FlyingSquid , in Hawaii Officials Were Warned Years Ago That Maui’s Lahaina Faced High Wildfire Risk

Lahaina was the former capital of the Kingdom of Hawai’i. All that history erased, joining so much other history of the Hawai’ian people that has been wiped out.

BlackNo1 , in Disapproval of Elon Musk is top reason Tesla owners are selling, survey says

its funny how selling a car brand as “eco” friendly backfires when you’re a fascist cunt

Clown_Tempura ,

It blows my mind that Elon would still be well-regarded as a visionary entrepreneur, accurately or not, if he had just kept his stupid fucking mouth shut.

joel_feila ,
@joel_feila@lemmy.world avatar

Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak and to remove all doubt

marmo7ade ,

Why does it blow your mind. Steve Jobs disowned his child and tried to cure cancer with fruit juice, and then used his wealth to jump the line for organ donation. He was human garbage. And people still adore him and iphones. But Jobs never hurt progressive liberals with any of his bullshit. Just his family.

This article says a lot about american consumers. They don’t buy things like iphones or teslas because of how they actually perform. They buy things based on how they will be preceived for owning it. AKA a society of shitty narcissists.

pureness ,

They buy things based on how they will be perceived for owning it.

The article says they don’t want Tesla’s because of the guy running the company, not because of their perception for owning it.

Zardozer ,

Your generalizations about US consumers has no basis in reality. You really think people would buy these mass-market products if they weren’t good? Just look at the consumer satisfaction surveys. I’m far from a Tesla fan, but for a long time, there weren’t truly good competitors to Tesla EVs. iphones have always and continue to be some of the most highly rated phones on the market.

And what is wrong with voting with your wallet and choosing not to support the business of a terrible person? That’s about the only power you have as a consumer, so people should exercise that power if they see fit.

Anticorp ,

Both the iPhone and Tesla perform well. You made some valid points, but went off the rails at the end. Yes, the image of the product influences people’s buying decisions. That’s basic marketing knowledge. But they’re also good products.

MargotRobbie ,
@MargotRobbie@lemmy.world avatar

Tesla never really had a brand besides being “Elon Musk’s electric car company”, and now as it turns out it’s way easier for car companies to add tech into their cars than for a tech company to learn to build good cars.

Potatos_are_not_friends , in Millions of kids are missing weeks of school as attendance tanks across the US

They started treating schools like prisons after columbine. Taking away bookbags. Treating students like criminals. Having rent-a-cop harass kids. Not to mention shooter training and underpaid teachers. And also this war on woke BS with book bans and continual changes to the educational material so kids are learning about atrocities from one source while their history book glosses over it.

So yeah schools aren’t in a good place right now.

Jumi ,

You know why? Uneducated people are easier to control and influence

Platomus ,

That is 100% what it is.

Republicans don’t get elected when the constituents are educated. So instead of changing their platform to align with educated opinions, they decided to dumb down the population.

They’ve been doing it for decades and it’s finally all coming to a head.

I’m a teacher and don’t see public schooling lasting more than 5 years.

FlyingSquid ,

There’s a new rule at my daughter’s middle school this year that children are not allowed to go to extracurricular activities (aside from sports for some reason) unless accompanied by a parent. What the fuck?

FlyingSquid , in Italian government stands ready to host as Musk talks up Zuckerberg rumble
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

But not until after the “surgery” Musk suddenly needs. And I’m sure once he “recovers,” which will be a very long “recovery,” he’ll find another excuse.

He knows Zuckerberg can beat the ever-loving shit out of him.

Xariphon , in Millions of kids are missing weeks of school as attendance tanks across the US

As a subscriber of antischool and a promoter of self-guided learning, I'm for people freeing themselves from school so long as they're not hurting anybody to do it.

Kecessa , (edited )

They’re hurting people by being tomorrow’s idiots ruining the world.

There, that encompasses all of them, now you’re pro school, right?

SheeEttin ,

On one hand, yeah, but on the other, to really achieve, you must stand on the shoulders of giants. Else, you will be reinventing the wheel, sometimes literally. One of our great advantages as a species is language, allowing us to communicate complex concepts.

calypsopub ,

I do think when people eventually decide what they want to do, they will apply themselves and learn. Kids (correctly) believe school is wasting their time. If we offered vocational training instead, I think it would be a win-win.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

This is some libertarian ‘pull themselves up by their bootstraps’ bullshit that I also never hear from anyone who actually has a child. Children do not have fully-developed brains. That alone should be enough to realize that they can’t be trusted to teach themselves things properly. They need guidance.

Also, letting a six-year-old decide for themselves whether or not they want to learn to read and know what 1+1 equals is just fucking stupid.

downpunxx , in Millions of kids are missing weeks of school as attendance tanks across the US

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Do tell us how that other option of not even going to grade school is going to work out for them in the future when they want to do things like move out of their parents’ house.

I’m not talking about college, just normal grade school. Because without a HS diploma, good luck getting much more than a minimum wage job.
