Banana republic – “Chiquita, formerly known as United Fruit”

t3rmit3 , in Israel added to UN ‘List of Shame’ for abuses against children in war, joining Palestinian Armed Groups, Russia, Sudanese Forces

If nothing else, it’s useful to see the double-standard laid so bare.

8,700 child casualties in a 7-year period when there is ostensibly no war going on, but that’s not enough to condemn them.

Noticably, that works out to a little more than 1,200 casualties a year, just of children, meaning adult women and men were not even counted.

But of course that specific number is only shocking, and only justifies defensive action, when Hamas does it.

rimu , in "Training future authoritarians": How China promotes its authoritarian capitalism model by teaching government officials in the Global South on how to infringe people's freedom and undermine democracy
@rimu@piefed.social avatar

I wish they were able to find better examples of the courses and the content (not just the summary from marketing materials). The examples they provided were really tame.

in China, law enforcement is designed to protect the state and the Party rather than the people, journalism is prescribed to create national unity rather than act as a check against the system, and the law is intended to protect the regime rather than its citizenry.

Very succinctly put!

In the Constitution of China you'll find a section where it explicitly states that the interests of the group outweigh those of the individual. It's baked into the legal bedrock.

0x815 OP ,

These are not marketing but training materials offering authoritarian principles in areas such as law enforcement, journalism, legal issues, space technologies, and many other topics, to build and maintain a totalitarian regime as China’s authoritarian capitalism model. It’s for the benefit of a few, while the people’s freedoms are suppressed.

Read the whole report.

rimu ,
@rimu@piefed.social avatar

Yeah, I read the whole thing. It was a good story but I felt that when it came time to "deliver the goods" they fell a bit short. For example, this: https://www.atlanticcouncil.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/06/final-image-global-south.png. That is under the heading "Clearly authoritarian", which seems pretty strong for such a boring sounding course.

I stand by my earlier comment.

rimu ,
@rimu@piefed.social avatar

The headline had me hoping for things like "Xinjiang - how we incarcerated 1 million people for only $5k pp / year" or "Integrating vassel states - lessons from Hong Kong" or "The Tibet Journey" or "Propaganda for fun and profit Steve Bannon edition".

Nope 😴

ID411 ,

Unsurprising because it’s flimsy propaganda.

From the the Atlantic Council, who in their own words,

“# Since 1961

For sixty years, the Atlantic Council has pursued the mission that we have now boiled down to a few words: “Shaping the global future together.” In short, we see our role as advancing and advocating constructive US leadership in the world alongside friends and allies.”

Spacehooks , in Cruelty-based intervention: Russia is set to reintroduce antipsychotic drug as autism treatment

Soo is cruelty the point? Seems like they are giving people anti violence drugs that are not violent. Seems like big pharma made a deal or this test to make a society like “We Happy Few”.

blindsight , in Cruelty-based intervention: Russia is set to reintroduce antipsychotic drug as autism treatment

That’s terrible, but so are the treatments this article is suggesting. ABA is abuse.

Behaviorism, in general, has lots of research supporting its efficacy in changing behavior, but completely ignores the mental health effects of the trauma from the behaviorist interventions.

This might be made more clear with a thought experiment from Dr Becky Kennedy’s mostly-unrelated parenting book, The Good Inside. (Great book, btw. Highly recommended for all parents.) I know a 100% effective treatment for any childhood behavior: when the child engages in the behaviour, lock them outside in a cage overnight. It will take at most 3 treatments and they’ll never exhibit that behavior again, guaranteed!

Aside from the hypothetical example obviously not passing ethics review, that’s literally how behaviorism research is conducted: the only thing they measure is efficacy in altering behaviour. That’s a really low bar.

ABA is “effective” because children are being conditioned to avoid being abused.

jarfil ,

Watching that ABA link is highly unnerving.

I’ve been offered behavioral therapy as an adult, but now I see that fortunately the psychiatrist in charge was dismissed before it would start. Later I learned that he wrote down I “don’t meet minimums”… and now I think I know what he meant: there was a session where I’m pretty sure he was trying me out, buy didn’t manage to provoke me. F-ing thank the FSM.

The only time I’ve done something remotely similar, was with a stray cat that wouldn’t stop attacking everyone: put her in a dark bathroom (with food, water, and a litter box), turning the light only every few hours to offer her to come out to me. Took the stubborn thing 3 days to make up her mind… and from then on she became a fluffy ball with just the occasional minor outburst. I still admit that was basically torture… except the alternative was to either throw her out back onto the street, or give to a shelter with a 24-hour “no adoption, no cat” policy.

It’s hard to believe anyone would advocate doing something like that to a person.

I seriously didn’t realize this was meant to be a secret?

Trump still can’t say “China” without saying it in a really weird tone because he’s used to saying “China flu” with emphasis on China.

You can’t help but think that a big component of the depression/doom feeling a lot of the experienced at the time was indirectly related to things Trump did

Honestly, I have no idea how valid/effective the Chinese vaccine is. But stuff like this is bad for everyone, not just the people they were targeting. Short sighted plan, in my opinion.

Even more disturbing if it caused extra deaths.

hydroptic , (edited ) in Protests sweep France against far right threat

I assume that the reich-wingers will use these protests as justification for crackdowns.

Here in Finland we had months of strikes against our current extremely conservative government’s cuts to public services, welfare etc. – naturally their reaction was to refuse to negotiate and make political strikes illegal, and to use the strikes to vilify unions and as scapegoats for poor economic performance

Gloomy ,
@Gloomy@mander.xyz avatar

Sounds abut right (wing). This is the kind of shit I see coming for a lot of Europe, including German (where I am located). The funny thing is that they can’t stop talking about “Eco Fashism” here and how the Greens are trying to dictate their every day live (like what to eat and what to fuel their cars with) and how that is a left green dictatorship. And then shit like you bring up here the second they get elected.

pleb_maximus ,

Sadly political strikes have been forbidden here for a long time already.

hydroptic , (edited )

Yeah this is absolutely the most fucking infuriating part about conservatives. They’ll crow about how “leftists” (ie. what seems like anyone left of the Strasserites) want to have a one-party fascist state that controls every aspect of people’s lives, and when they get in power they start doing exactly what they accuse leftists of wanting.

They also have a real habit of blaming all of their own fuckups on the left; our current extremist government got in to power by claiming that our previous leftist government caused some sort of massive debt problem (government debt did increase, but they had COVID to deal with), when the reality is that it has been the previous 20 or so years of right wing governments who have consistently cut taxes for the rich and sold government property to cover for the budget deficits. Conveniently reich-wingers ignored the part where their ideology is the one that wants to cut taxes, leading to higher debt and cut social programs and public services, and somehow they’re stupid enough that they don’t even see it themselves and they believe it when their lying politicians claim it is all the evil leftists’ fault that our public healthcare is now completely broken and the welfare system is among the worst in Europe.

Five OP , (edited )

At the last family reunion, my mother and I were in charge of making all the food. We spent 3 days getting all of the groceries, and stacked fruits and vegetables in the family room, filled the bathtub with ice to keep the meat, and stacked the drinks in the garage.

We fried the meat, boiled the noodles, mixed the salad, and cooked the chili. The entire counter and range were covered in pots and pans. Most of the intermediate cookware had been rinsed and was in the process of going through the dish cycle while we were setting tables out in the yard, when my Mom realized she hadn’t made any red pea soup. Her brother was flying in from the island for the occasion and she knew it was his favorite. The bag of peas had hid under a couch pillow, and we missed it while making the rest of the meal.

We didn’t have enough time to wait for the cleaning cycle to finish, so I dumped out a shallow stainless steel flower vase and put that over the flame. There was no time to soak the peas, so my mom just mixed them raw with the broth, yams, carrots, milk, and spices, and then transferred them to a clean bowl once the cycle was complete. The soup didn’t look right, though. The peas and broth are supposed to have a full ruddy color, but the result was a much darker red like a beet.

When uncle arrived he was really pleased to see we’d kept him in mind, but after the event was over and everyone had gone home, we found a pile of wet peas dumped behind some bushes. I learned a very important lesson that day: Those who make peas full-red solution in posse bowl, make violet-red solution inedible.
