I don’t mind captchas if there were 1-3 of them only. Try connecting via vpn or tor, you get stuck with 30+ captchas one after another going in loop even if you kept answering them all correctly they keep on coming: select truck, select bike, select cum… holymoly fucking shit bro

Shout out to that time when I was like 11 and tried to download a lil bow wow song and my sister and I were greeted with a full screen p-in-v POV amateur porn on the family computer.

Captchas today are completely obsolete to avoid bots, more now with AI, since years and are just simple click ads from different companies since no one clicks on banner ads anymore. A simple Honeypot system or, as they do in some forums, waiting half an hour before sending the email with the account code, are much more efficient to avoid bots, without pissing off the user.

Ugh, Rockstar and Blizzard have these super insane captchas where you have to solve puzzles 20 times in a fucking row without making a single mistake. They show the answer and then you have to flip through 6 images and choose the correct image matching the answer. Times 20! I just wanted to play GTA5, just gave up. Wasn’t worth my time because it kept failing.

Rev3rze ,

I ragequit the puzzles on the rockstar captcha. Incredibly infuriating. I was reminded of the famous greentext from way back predicting we’d have to drink a verification can of mountain dew and for a moment that seemed less insane than the reality of these impossible puzzles. Had to get someone to help me solve them after cooling off for a moment.

InFerNo ,

I actually haven’t bothered anymore since that one evening. I haven’t played GTA 5 in years and wanted to play the story a bit, but if this is how it is, then they can take their captchas and shove them in sideways.

Venator ,

This is 2024, if you want to play games you’ve purchased legally you have to crack them

InFerNo ,

But this is just the crack? I’d need to be able to install the game first, but I can’t log into the installer.

Venator ,

Oh… I guess you need to have purchased it from steam to be able to use the crack…

You kinda do, though. I’ve been smoking for 13 years. And I’ve been smoking quite heavily about, 1.5 pack per day on average.

I tried to stop several times and it didn’t work out. Then one day 10 years ago, I realized how crazily much money I spend on that “hobby” and how I’ll need that money for my wedding a year later. And then I just stopped.

I used nicotine free cigarettes as a crutch for a while, but that was it. It was surprisingly easy, when before I was almost shaking during a 2 hour flight because of nicotine withdrawal…

What this boils down to imo is, when you really want to stop, you can just stop. Try to find out why you want to stop and don’t miss the opportunity window. If I hadn’t stopped that day, I’d probably still be smoking.

Yeah seems the hardest part of quitting any habit is really the resolve to do so.

flying_sheep ,
@flying_sheep@lemmy.ml avatar

So you’re agreeing. “one does not simply stop, because one needs to be really sure that they want to stop for some reason or another”. The desire to stop doesn’t come from nothing, yet it’s the vital ingredient for stopping successfully. Unless you have it, stopping is really hard.

The contents of your message aren’t a “no”, they’re a “yes, and”

Mr_Dr_Oink ,

I went a different way to this.

I smoked for about 15 years, i used rolling tobacco and would get through 30-40grams in 4 days, im not sure what the conversion rate is but i was smoking easily 10-20 rollups a day. (Never really counted)

I tried to swap to vaping a few times but always fell back. I tried stopping cold turkey multiple times but always ended up going back even harder and smokk g more every time.

Eventually a friend got me on to a new vape, one of thos big cloudy ones that makes you look like a prick. But it had just the right feel, had good flavours and low nicotine content. (Lowest you could get).

At first i was vaping alot, loads. But the number of opportunities i had to vape was the same as when i smoked. So i would be beholden to that schedule daily. This meant my jicotine intake was drastically reduced and didnt leave me ratty because i was still getting some.

It seemed that as the days passed i was missing opportunities to vape more and more, until one day, i worked straight through without even thinking about it. Its been almost a year now and i just dont miss them at all.

I think that everyone is different and half the reason so many people struggle to quit based on advice from others is that we are all different, we smoke different amounts, we smoke for different reasons and different lengths of times and we all have our own tolerance to maintaining our will power.

For some, the decision to quit is enough and our resolve will be strong, for others we need weening and gradual reduction in order to quit. And everything in between.

What works for you or me may work for millions of people, but not for millions more. The best we can do is pass on our anecdotal experience like we both have and let people do what works for them.

Can I click on me?

asteriskeverything , in Don't look to hard in too our history... please..
papalonian , in Oh tell me again how it loads faster and takes up less resources

I’ve switched to Firefox but there’s definitely a few things that irritate me about it.

First thing is when I boot up my computer, launch Firefox, it launches long enough for me to click a bookmark then closes to perform an update. And then doesn’t automatically reopen…

I also have it set to not “remember” my tabs after closing. Yet when I launch Firefox for the first time after rebooting or closing ally tabs, it gives me a “hmm… we’re having a hard time finding your previous session” message. Uh, yeah, I told you not to look for it… can I just have the regular “new tab” page?

It also might just be because I’m used to chrome, but I feel the mobile app is severely lacking. I hate that I can’t access my bookmarks directly from the new tab page, and that the tablet version doesn’t show you your bookmark bar. The synchronization between mobile and desktop isn’t great either, I’ll have a very long specific search query that I’ve used multiple times on my phone, yet it doesn’t offer it for auto-complete on desktop, I have to search the entire term again or go digging through my history. When you’re searching long model numbers and the like, this is incredibly frustrating.

Finally, and I don’t know if this is a Firefox issue, but there’s some memory leak that occurs when viewing a webcam stream from my raspberry pi that only has happened in Firefox. The first time I noticed it happening my PC slowed to a crawl, when task manager finally opened Firefox was taking 23GB of RAM. So I have to use chrome to keep that steam open for more than a few minutes at a time.

ftbd ,

I’m curious as to why Firefox is checking for updates, have you configured it to do so? I’ve never seen Firefox do that (and it feels weird to have a program sidestep the update mechanism of the package manager)

Darorad ,

They’re probably on windows

joe_cool ,

That has a background update service. It’ll only immediately kick you out for serious security updates. Unless you f’ed with the configuration.

bfg9k ,

Firefox auto updates itself by default I’ve found

SirHenry ,

Lol the webcam thing hanned to me too.

This might be fixed on Firefox nightly
