Mini all-in-one PC are expensive, just buy a used/refurbished regular PC. If you want, you can get them in SFF (Small Form Factor), which are still upgradable and a better option than AIOs. Here are some results on eBay for reference.
I’d recommend getting AMD because of their excellent Linux support and overall better gaming performance. Also, you don’t need a dedicated GPU for playing old games, even more so since AMD’s integrated GPU is a lot better than Intel’s, and works better on Linux too.
But it you want to play current games, you’ll need a dedicated GPU, and that $250 budget isn’t going to cut it unfortunately. However, you always have the option of buying a cheap used GPU later on, when you’ve got some cash to spare. But for now, if you focus on older games then the integrated GPU on an AMD will do fine.
Thanks for the thorough explanation! This was very helpful. I was about to ask about why AMD over intel, and this gives me confidence that I won’t run into issues with setting up linux. I don’t really have any interest right now with current games except for the remastered versions of the aforementioned classic games, and if thos will work with dedicated GPUs, I should be good.
In that price range the best you can get is probably something with a Ryzen 5500U. If you were to go up to ~350 then you could get a significantly faster 5800H
I don’t like playing with Bluetooth controllers. It’s not necessarily the amount of input latency but the inconsistency of it.
For having fun with friends Bluetooth is fine, but if possible go for a cable instead.
That said, there’s the XBox Wireless Dongle which uses the same protocol as an XBox. The latency is minimal like a cable, and it does support up to 8 XBox Wireless Controller.
Sadly the Linux support isn’t perfect but the xone kernel driver sees regular development.
I think it depends on your computer’s Bluetooth module. I haven’t noticed an input lag problem with my DualShock on either of two computers, but some people with different hardware have reported lag until they switched to a different Bluetooth dongle.
YMMV, though. I have no experience with Rocket League.
been using dual sense for a long time now, I love using it, but the battery life leads some to be desired. also the gyro scope isn’t nearly as good as the dualshock 4
The early ones had a battery life problem, but I believe they fixed that a year or two ago. Upgrading your firmware might help, if you haven’t already.
Man thats great. Im not a devoted player but from time to time I just buy a game to have some fun. Last ones were Hellblade and Witcher 3. Also In thinkng of starting a new build from scratch so I might just jump into Linux and leave Windows behind for good. What is the ideal Linux flavour for gaming? Ubuntu? Mint? Whats it like with gpu drivers and what not?
If you have AMD GPU, it “just works” with pretty much any Linux distribution since the driver is included with the kernel.
If you have an NVIDIA GPU, you need to install the drivers from your distribution’s package manager. That’s usually pretty easy, at AFAIK Ubuntu and Mint detect it and prompt you to install them.
Once it’s installed, just update your system like normal and you’ll always have the latest drivers.
ideal Linux flavour
It doesn’t really matter, just pick something you like. If you’re using Steam, it’s basically the same experience regardless of the distro.
So pick something relatively popular so you have better options if you run into an issue. I recommend Mint, but plenty of others work well.
Diablo 4 runs well 60-40fps in the open world 60fps in dungeons on a mix of low/med settings. I play it at 50fps cap for smoother pacing and it’s a great experience.
Lutris is a python application, you can do git clone on the GitHub repo and you car run lutris from there. This will also use your config files as they are stored in your home directory.
On an additional note, install the locate package. It will create an index of ALL the files in your computer. Making searching for files a simple task.
I posted about it here: (sorry not sure how to do a cross-post from its instance) lemmy.ca/post/1123689?scrollToComments=true, but SDL version 2.28 is broken for 8bitdo controllers in Xbox mode, downgrading to 2.27 fixes that.
thank you. This is the exact problem i have everything in that post is the problem I’m having. going to go through it.
90% fix after following the instructions. only problem now is both d-input and x-input have both and a/b x/y buttons switched idky. will look further into it
