GlowHuddy , in What are your thoughts on the state of native Linux games?
@GlowHuddy@lemmy.world avatar

I started to look at wine/Proton as just another linux runtime. At least now game devs have sth (mostly) stable and backwards compatible that they can target. It is really important since in Linux world, things are much more prone to experience breaking changes. Also the fact that game devs just need to develop one version for both Linux and Windows makes it super easy to target proton - you even don’t need to have a separate build process. Hence we get a more ‘refined’ version than just half-assed port made by a small team or third-party.

So I’m quite happy with how things are now. It just shows how flexible and capable Linux really is. And who knows maybe in the distant utopian future, Linux (or sth based on it similar to chomebooks, but maybe not as gimped) will pick up market and we will have much more “native” runtime.

Bero , in Hearts of Iron 4 on Wayland doesn't work
@Bero@kbin.social avatar

Why use proton/wine when the game has a native client that works fine?
Playing it on kde/wayland on arch for a long time now, and both native and windows client through proton work just fine.

If you don’t have to put up with Nvidia and there’s nothing tying you to X11 I recommend making the jump to Wayland, a lot of these sorts of issues have been solved over there

sosodev OP ,

I’ve tried wayland but it seems like games often don’t work :(

dj3hac ,

I haven’t had any problems with gaming in Wayland. Perhaps you haven’t configured it properly, especially if it wasn’t default installed on your system.

priapus ,

What DE and distro did you try Wayland with? All games should work as they did on X11.

sosodev OP ,

Gnome and Pop OS. I only briefly tried Wayland but multiple games just failed to launch or would launch and then crash not launch again.

zbecker ,
@zbecker@mastodon.zbecker.cc avatar

@sosodev @priapus

You might want to try it again, I haven't had any issues really and I am using hyprland these days.

priapus ,

I would highly recommend trying again and sharing logs if you continue to have problems. People on here or the PopOS forums should be able to help. Wayland on AMD should function just as well as X11, and I would expect PopOS to ship all the necessary dependencies.

soda3x , in Amazon Games support is coming soon to Heroic Games Launcher

I've literally never used amazon games launcher but I've always redeemed the free prime games. now i can finally play them :D

saiarcot895 , in Streaming non-steam games from Linux?

Are you using Wayland? If so, you need to launch Steam as steam -pipewire, and then select your display. Note that your screensaver will be inhibited while Steam is open with this option.

That being said, I would recommend going for a Sunshine/Moonlight setup if you can rather than using Steam remote play. I get much better performance with Sunshine and Moonlight.

CarlosCheddar OP , (edited )

Yes I’m using Wayland so I’ll give that a shot.

EDIT: Didn’t work I’ll give sunshine a shot.

Quazatron , in Amazon Games support is coming soon to Heroic Games Launcher
@Quazatron@lemmy.world avatar

Nice, I was not expecting that. This is my favorite launcher, it’s sleek, fast and solid. I hope someday they add support for Itch.io and Humble so I can get all my games under one roof.

tiwenty , in Undervolting in linux
@tiwenty@lemmy.world avatar

I’d also be interested in it. I got a work laptop that has a good battery, but it’s an i7 and I mainly need to SSH and use FF, so I think I could undervolt/underclock quite a bit.

Juujian , (edited )

Ubuntu has some pretty sensible presets for that, I use them by default when I’m on battery. It’s called power profile and there is performance, balanced, and power saver. The only application where responsiveness really suffers is gmail 🤡

Pretty sure those are present in other distros, too. My understanding is that they really just limit per draw.

tiwenty ,
@tiwenty@lemmy.world avatar

Too bad I use Arch (btw) ^^

sambeastie ,

You can use it on Arch too. It’s probably worth checking out the whole Power Management page on the wiki, but in short, the major desktop environments all have hooks for these options, and there are a lot of options for supplementary packages to power-profiles-daemon that you might find helpful.

Thank you, I’ll check it!

drturtle , in Meta announced 'IGL', a high-performance cross-platform graphics library

Can someone with more knowledge of graphics libraries give some insight? How does this fit in with OpenGL, Metal, etc?

tvmole , in What’s the best distro for gaming on linux? Any tips and tricks?

I think most distros will work just fine. It’s gotten so so much easier since Valve invested in Proton to make the Steam Deck work.

Personally, I’m on EndeavourOS with Gnome and it works fine for all my Steam games on an AMD GPU. Years ago, I was on Linux Mint, and that worked just fine for gaming too.

One caveat: if you have an Nvidia GPU, driver support can sometimes be a headache (or at least it was several years ago when I had one). Some distros claim better out of the box support for Nvidia, like Pop OS

Wait seriously?? I just bought it… I hope they change their minds about that.

00 OP ,
@00@kbin.social avatar

Oof, sorry to be the deliverer of bad news. In another thread someone suggested to reach out to the developers and ask them about the future of Linux. I couldnt really find any place to reach out though, so if you have already bought the game, you could check whether the credits might mention contact details. Having already bought the game is obviously a better foot to stand on as well, so that might help the argument.

deong , in Steam takes forever to launch Arch Linux Nvidia

I was having similar problems on a fresh arch install with multiple apps taking upwards of 15 seconds to launch, and the “fix” ended up being to uninstall one or more of the “portal” packages (there are several with names like xdg-desktop-portal-gtk). gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/…/74 and bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=285334 for more info.

Could be completely unrelated, but it might be worth a try.

setInner234 ,

You are right, this fixes slow startup times for Steam, Firefox, Thunderbird and various others.

skymtf OP ,

Mine is legit only steam and takes upwards of 3-5 minutes

mortalic , in Gaming on Linux has come a long way

I know I’m super late to this post, but I just bought a brand new gaming laptop that came with w11. Was installing games to play and installed days gone. It refused to launch. Went over to my steam deck, installed it, and it ran flawlessly.

Moral of the story, w11 is so bad that sometimes games work better on Linux! 😂

Glad it worked out for you!

The improvements in the last 5 years or so have been dramatic. When I switched to Linux ~12 years ago I had to give up gaming. Now, we can get the best of both worlds.

I was able to play a game that wouldn’t run well on my laptop after switching to Linux. It’s wild. Never going back
