That theme situation is a bit odd, there should be better documentation about that.

Omniformative ,

You can help improve the desktop integration documentation at their GitHub repo.

wallmenis , in Why can't flatpaks just work

The default permissions for each app are up to the package maintainer. If something seems odd about a package, complain there.

ErnieBernie10 OP ,

I think it would be good if they expanded the permissions system. Taking inspiration from the android world where it will ask for the permission whenever it needs to access something on the system. This is an ideal world but would take a lot of effort for the maintainers to implement. I guess it needs time to mature. I just hope flatpak devs want to adress the issue eventually… So far I only ever see people just accepting the way it is now and finding workarounds…

nous ,

Android has the benefit of being greenfield and has an API that everything needs to go through to access the system. Flatpacks and snaps do not have this. They need to work with applications that were never designed to be sandboxed and just expect to have access to everything all the time so is a much harder problem to solve.

Molecular0079 ,

No reason why Flatpak can’t create such an API though so that new applications can use it, older applications can eventually switch to, etc. We’re already seeing adoption of things like xdg-desktop-portal so it isn’t that out of the question.

nous ,

Yes, but this takes time and still has to work with applications that dont support it. Where Anrdoid can just force everyone that wants to create an app to use their API. So it is harder for flatpack to encourage everyone to adpot it.

Molecular0079 ,

Of course, it will definitely take time to transition over, but that’s the case for all APIs in the PC ecosystem. I am a firm believer of “if you build it people will come” and I am sure a well integrated Flatpak permissions system with good UX is a convincing argument for a lot of apps to switch over.

Daeraxa ,

Unfortunately this means that sometimes the project maintainers get complaints and not the package maintainer. Two projects I’m involved with don’t officially support Flatpak. With one of them we do want to support it eventually but things just aren’t there are and we have far bigger fish to fry.
The problem is that some well meaning people have created flatpaks and published them to flathub which means every single time something breaks or doesn’t work correctly they come to the actual project to complain about something we didn’t even do.

HughJanus , in Why can't flatpaks just work

It’s Linux, dude. If everything worked then everyone would use it. Can’t have that .

ErnieBernie10 OP ,

We should at least aim for it…

PseudoSpock , in issue uninstalling Vivaldi fixed

sudo apt purge vivaldi-stableThen, as yourself (not root): rm -rf ${HOME}/.cache/vivaldi ${HOME}/.config/vivaldi

That removes the package, and your personal stored config and cache of the browser. NOTE: rm -rf is permanent without a backup or snapshot to restore from. Don’t delete these unless you are certain you want to.

Is that including Steamdeck in that 3%, or users becoming aware of Linux based on Steamdeck? 3 percent may not seem like much but it moves the 2 percent from 1 in 50 people to close to 1 in 30 people. So more chance of bumping into a fellow user. I met up with an old work colleague just before the pandemic, we got to chatting about computers he mentioned he had dumped W10 for Mint around the same time I’d dropped W10 for OpenSUSE. Seems the Windows 10 was a tipping point for more savvy computer users who understood there could be other Operating Systems out there besides Windows or MacOS.

npmstart_pray , in Linux Kernel 6.3 Reaches End of Life, Users Urged to Upgrade to Linux 6.4

What is the next LTS kernel and when is it slated for release? 24.04-ish?

bookworm ,
@bookworm@feddit.nl avatar

They are usually released at the end of the year.

  • 6.1 - 2022-12-11
  • 5.15 - 2021-10-31
  • 5.10 - 2020-12-13
  • 5.4 - 2019-11-24
  • 4.19 - 2018-10-22
  • 4.14 - 2017-11-12

But when you say “24.04” it sounds like you are asking when the next Ubuntu LTS is released?

beaker , in Plan on getting a Linux laptop: any suggestions?

I’m on my second Dell XPS 13 Developer laptop which comes with Ubuntu pre installed. I loved the first one but played too much Minecraft and wore out a couple of keys. I had it long enough that decent replacement keyboards were hard to find so I got a new laptop from the same line. I love the second one even more. My brother, also a Linux-using software professional, made the initial recommendation, so there is at least one other person who liked this line.

PurrJPro OP ,

Ooo, nice! Although I don’t really want to use Ubuntu myself (nothing wrong with the distro itself, I’ve just tried others I like), the knowledge it’s Linux compatible is amazing!

zerotozero ,

I have two generations of XPS 15 running Linux without issue. You may need to disable secure boot depending on what distro you install, but beyond that everything works great 👍

BritishJ ,

Love my XPS 13, runs fedora with no issues. Such a solid laptop. Also love my 4K screen

hardcoreufo ,

I had an XPS 13 non developer for about 5 years. Ran any distro I threw at it. Upgraded to a frameworks last year though and not looking back. It’s all about that 3:2 display for me. The main thing I miss on the XPS is that it sipped power while suspended. I could leave it with the lid closed for a week unplugged and it would still be at 50% The framework 12th Gen is not so forgiving. If it sits in my bag all weekend it will be dead come Monday.

PurpleGreen , in SUSE plan on forking RHEL and make a RHEL compatible distro available for everyone

Why rhel/cent os is such a big deal? Cant ppl just use Debian / Ubuntu / alpine?

maynarkh ,

RHEL gets enterprise support from RedHat / IBM.

Point is, if you work for some big corp, when you buy something, you want proper warranties meaning people to blame if it breaks down. I have seen corps want to pay for stuff available free just so they can point at someone if there’s a problem. Ubuntu is mostly fine, Canonical does offer support, but “nobody ever got fired for choosing IBM”.

qrtr ,

The enterprise support also means security updates, which is a huge requirement for government contract work (not just US, anything military really). I’ve also seen requirements for use of DISA approved products. I think at the time RHEL and maybe SUSE were the only ones on the list - I’m a few years removed from having to care about this.

ancientweasel ,

Switching is not always trivial.

I have a huge build that only works on EL7. It will take months of focused effort to unfuck that build code.

This may not work for everyone, but the only way to truly embrace Linux was to wipe the windows partition and start using Linux. That’s it, you no longer have to option to run back to your dual booted Windows if shit doesnt work. You sit down and figure it out.
