GustavoM , in Is Gentoo more-or-less pointless for the average Linux user?
@GustavoM@lemmy.world avatar

If you have lots of free time…? Nah, not really.

t. tried Gentoo once, noticed it took over 7 hours to compile a kernel (on a “HIGH-END gaming rig”) – noped the eff out of it instantly.

uyuu ,

It doesnt take 7 hours on my 6 year old laptop. Did you ran make with j16 or however many cores you have?

warmaster , in whats so good about arch compared to linux mint?

I use Crystal Linux, which is Arch based.

I’ve tried Mint along with 10 other distros. What I liked about Arch is:

  • Latest Kernel, always. This means new drivers, better support for your current devices and support for more devices. Security & performance patches.
  • AUR. Massive repo of user submitted apps & libs most not found elsewhere.
  • Arch WiKi. Everything you will need or want to do somebody else already did and documented it so everyone else can have a guide to do it. Best documentation site ever.
  • Arch Repo. Always the latest Software. Officially maintained apps and libs land first on Arch, Debian & Ubuntu derivatives take ages to catch up in comparison.
floofloof ,

It’s great having so much software available but the AUR makes me nervous because you really don’t know who you’re trusting when you install something from there.

FreeBooteR69 ,
@FreeBooteR69@kbin.social avatar

That's why you are supposed to check the pkgbuild before installing anything from the aur.

warmaster ,

Flathub has hundreds of apps which are not sandboxed and untrustworthy. So, no source is safe, and even most “safe” apps are not protected from supply chain attacks. So, you always have to be careful. But I agree there are certainly degrees of safety, and the AUR is certainly another one, which should not be taken lightly.

I don’t think gnome has speech dictation support. That’s too bad though because speech recognition in Linux is actually very good when using Faster Whisper library: github.com/guillaumekln/faster-whisper

Losing Unsplash hurts :(

What’s this, first time hearing about it

@mouse@midwest.social avatar

Unsplash hosts stock photography. The feature would grab an image every day so that the wallpaper would be different.

ikidd ,
@ikidd@lemmy.world avatar

Yah, pretty unhappy about that but if that’s what Unsplash thinks they need to do, not much Plasma devs can do about it.

kerneltux , in Is Gentoo more-or-less pointless for the average Linux user?

Yeah, the average user: 1) doesn’t care what’s running under the hood, and 2) doesn’t want to control what’s running under the hood.

I’m definitely not an “average user.” I like specifying that I don’t want wifi, bluetooth, or dvd functionality on my desktop when I have no need/desire to use them. So use flags are one of the main reasons I use Gentoo. Occasionally, it causes some mild irritation, but it’s a net-positive for me.

FFMpeg is so confusing, this is a great, and needed. Also, here’s a interview the creator youtu.be/9kaIXkImCAM

Can’t say that I’ve really used any of the features mentioned in this list, so doesn’t really affect my experience negatively. Also, updating some icon sets to fit with the overall theme would provide a more unified experience. So two thumbs-up from me for removing code that, by & large, wasn’t getting used, should help maintaining it in the long run.

HumanPerson , in How do you all go about backing up your data, on Linux?

When I do something really dumb I typically just use dd to create an iso. I should probably find something better.

CanofBeanz , in The Eupnea Project - Booting a full linux system on your Chromebook using Depthboot

Pretty cool project, haven’t seen it before. as someone who has used two different UEFI flashed Chromebooks as main laptops it’s not something I would use. Really only useful if you want to retain ChromeOS compatibility and I guess only want Linux as secondary option.
