Can anyone explain Windowed Widgets to me? I don’t know if I used it or not.

ace ,

Basically, you can open some widgets inside a standalone window instead of attaching them to a bar/desktop, making them act like some kind of standalone application instead - including losing all their state as soon as their window is closed.

SSUPII ,

Actually very cool! Unfortunate that some people used them wrongly.

ace ,

The only widget I’ve found in any way useful as a detached window like that has been the sticky note, and even there the usability is limited compared to just opening kwrite - or any other simple text editor.

It’s definitely an interesting - if quite useless and potentially confusing - feature, but it makes complete sense to drop it from core and instead let it live as an extension instead, since it’s quite literally just a krunner runner anyway.

Wow, well done. I haven’t done that in like 20 years!

analisys , in Rethinking Window Management on GNOME – Space and Meaning

Went tentative, left excited. Honestly it sums up my hopes for float/tiling window future.

buwho ,

Ive been using Pop OS which has their own Gnome extension (Cosmic? or Pop Shell?)for tiling/floating windows management and it works really well for me. Its toggle-able and adjust window size and placement pretty well imo.

someacnt , in Why is Linux so frustrating for some people?

Reading comments, it’s soo strange that I never borked my system once during nearly 7 years of linux usage. Playing games were frustrating, but it was improved a lot by now. My ubuntu never failed to boot, the only audio problem I had was with the mic. Even better, KDE Connect introduced new workflow to me. I wonder why my computer always boots well even when it gets borked during shutdown…

Nowadays, I use my own hand-rolled DE. It still refuses to break on me. Guess I am really lucky or something.

tiwenty ,
@tiwenty@lemmy.world avatar

You’re not alone. I’ve been rocking Arch for a few years now, and I only reinstalled it when I changed computers. It just works.

Voytrekk ,
@Voytrekk@lemmy.world avatar

I’ve borked my system a few times, but I know it was always because I messed with stuff that I didn’t understand. My system is much more stable now that I learned those early lessons.

snek_boi ,

Same here. My issues atm are that NixOS is just too darn complicated sometimes… But that doesn’t mean stuff gets borked.

olafurp , in Thunderbird Flatpak got updated to 115 Supernova

I’ve been using Thunderbird as my daily driver for a while now.

  • Great automation and filtering. -10$/year add-on for a complete MS suite interop for work.
  • Customized the theming.
  • Tracker blocking.
  • Calendars
  • First class Linux support

It’s just as good as every other email client but without them reading it. :)

OrangeCorvus ,
@OrangeCorvus@lemmy.world avatar

Can you elaborate more on the add-on, what’s it called? I just started using Thunderbird again but at the moment only for my personal addresses.

darcmage ,

Probably owl.

roomey ,

Probably referring to OWL plugin. However your admins can allow IMAP access to outlook365 and with tbsync, you get full integration for free. OWL is good tho too

OrangeCorvus ,
@OrangeCorvus@lemmy.world avatar

I am my own admin, running my small business so I am user/admin/spam receiver :). I might stick with Outlook for business for the moment. Don’t want to mess around. For private use, Thunderbird is chef’s kiss .

Mereo ,

What’s the addon?

rbos ,
@rbos@lemmy.ca avatar

OWL is good, I use it, but its calendaring leaves a lot to be desired. :/

If you just want to try to recover, PhotoRecThis does require it to at least be able to power and have a raw device to look at, though it doesn’t have to be able to be mounted. More than just photos can be recovered.

Had pretty close to the same results with PhotoRec vs commercial tools on windows.

djtech OP ,

tried but no device (like /dev/sdb) appears so PhotoRec just shows a menu for selection with my main disks.

PoorPocketsMcNewHold , in What microphone are you using for Linux?

Also suggest the advice of getting an external audio interface. That wy, no drivers shenanigans, as it should be. For me, an Audio-Technica AT2020 XLR works great. Been using some cheap Tonor ones before too.

Shame about khotkeys, but I get it.

Thank you for the reasonable communication, it helps.

I’m skeptical that ALL the functionality will be recreated. We’ll see.

SomeWeeb , in Is anyone using Asahi Linux?

I have a Mac Mini M1 and Asahi Linux works very well on it. Pretty much everything I use already has an aarch64 version. The IDE I was using doesn’t, so I switched to the JetBrains equivalent, which does work on ARM.

The one big letdown is that displayport doesn’t work. Only HDMI does. But going by your other comments you’re using a macbook rather than a mac mini, so that might not matter to you.

CalcProgrammer1 ,
@CalcProgrammer1@lemmy.ml avatar

It’s been a few months since I tried it on my Mac Mini M1, but HDMI audio didn’t work last I tried. It was kind of a big deal since I use it as a TV PC.

tombuben , in Rethinking Window Management on GNOME – Space and Meaning

When I was using Gnome on a laptop, I really enjoyed the PaperWM tiling manager extension. It’s not exactly something that can be used with a mouse, but it’s a really pleasant touchpad/touch first multitasking interface, where instead of having traditional workspaces that are constrained to the size of your monitor, you basically get infinite horizontally scrollable workspaces that are a joy to navigate with a touchpad.

ime: red hat & centos dominate with ubuntu, debian, suse and amazon linux all a distant 2nd.

i also expect it to change given red hat’s recent decision to stop sharing their source.
