Florida really saddens me, because environmentally it is such a great place (of course there are exceptions as always).

The weather is 90% awesome. The scenery is beautiful. The pace of life is nice. The roads are smooth.

And it was getting more progressive too.

Unfortunately that shithead desantis has ruined it.

Come check out Oklahoma! Where you can be both the Secretary of Transportation and head the Turnpike authority (at least for a year, until the attorney general gets off his ass)! You can opt out of complying with state law (the Open Meetings Act) if you really really want to bulldoze thousands of family homes to build a toll road and don’t like that people have opinions on it.

There’s no guarantee that your kids teacher is even background checked, much less that they are qualified to teach the subject they are teaching! Thousands of dollars in COVID funds earmarked for education went to buying Christmas trees and TVs. (State superintendent and Secretary of Education also got to be positions held by the same person - with two paychecks!) We also are trying to be national leaders in ignoring the first amendment and establishing a religious online charter school!

Well, a direct invasion of the US is a bad option and the world knows this.

The problem is with Russia is state controlled media. If Putin was eliminated, the world probably wouldn’t know for at least a week and that would give their media enough time to tell the public who else they should like instead. It wouldn’t surprise me if there is a pre-recorded video of Putin “stepping down” or “retiring”.

If you have ever watched Russian state media, you will see they are probably worse than the Ministry of Truth. Their panel discussions are disgusting, actually. Four or five different people, with four or five different “views” that all converge on the same exact points: West evil, Putin god, Russia war machine invinsible, Russians have the best society on earth, everyone else is a nazi.

(I don’t want to exclude the rest of the worlds media either. Most major outlets have their own agendas for sure, but Russians probably get the most blatant version. They don’t even hide it.)

callmepk ,
@callmepk@lemmy.world avatar

Russia state media sounds exactly like China’s state media lol

My grands really loves this show on China central television called Cross-Strait (海峽兩岸) that they will invite “unbiased” Taiwan experts how bad the current Taiwan Government is, how bad US is, how China has better military power to Taiwan, and how close the reunion is getting

alcoholicorn ,

Everything except for the Taiwan reunification getting closer is pretty hard to disagree with though, the US might end up making it happen much sooner than expected, just not in a way that’s favorable to anyone involved.

In the long term, reunification is pretty inevitable; just by virtue of the US being a failing empire, china will eventually offer them a deal so much better than what the west can offer that it won’t be refused.

callmepk ,
@callmepk@lemmy.world avatar

China won’t offer a deal; currently in China it is really heavily promoted on China’s own social media for a war towards Taiwan to “leave the island but no one will be survived” ( 留島不留人) while promoting to the foreign country that peace is the only way to handle conflict

alcoholicorn ,

I can only assume that is directed to American troops on Taiwan, since the Taiwan residents are still PRC citizens.

callmepk ,
@callmepk@lemmy.world avatar

No, they are targeting on every Taiwanese people that includes normal citizens. And you said “Taiwan residents are PRC citizens”, lol do you even know Chinese/Taiwan politics?

alcoholicorn ,

That seems unlikely, what exactly are they trying to reunify with? A few rocks and beaches in the pacific ocean?

callmepk ,
@callmepk@lemmy.world avatar

Resources. Also to Xi, this is a really important milestone that he actually wants to do while he is still at the place.

alcoholicorn ,

C’mon, that’s absurd, if the PRC wanted to murder everyone living in the RoC they wouldn’t be letting them travel freely to and from the mainland.

You wouldn’t have similar numbers of people supporting immediate independence and eventual reunification on Taiwan.

callmepk ,
@callmepk@lemmy.world avatar

They are the frogs got baited into the Luke-warm water; once they are in the water, they gonna turn on the heat. The bait is getting hard recently with Xinjiang Travel incident (cannot find English news, this is the Chinese one: rfa.org/…/tw-youtuber-xinjiang-08272024072943.htm…). While trying to fina a news link, accidentally clicking in a so-called Xinjiang Travel vlog, and holy shit it is filled with Chinese bots….

Also, I read your article, and your comparison is weird; the graph inside already shows 31.5% for leaning towards independence and only 7.4% towards reunion in 2021

alcoholicorn ,

You know Radio Free Asia is literally funded by the CIA? It is the very definition of non-credible.

The graph shows the overwhelming majority want the status quo for now, with only ~10% wanting immediate independence. That portion would be a lot higher, and the “reunification now+eventually” segments would be almost zero if China’s ambition was genocidal.

callmepk ,
@callmepk@lemmy.world avatar

Oh, non-credible? Then let me just give you other sources:

would be almost zero if China’s ambition was genocial

Lmao

Sorry I really laughed out load for this. I will tell you why there are such people: because that’s how Chinese works. As long as you don’t talk about politics and any conflicts around China, they just look like normal people, they are kind and cheerful; but when you actually touched on the topic, they just turn into genocidal psychopaths. As a Chinese myself, this just made me stop talking about politics in the public; even when they try to move to a political topic like Messi Mess, I will just try to move to other topics

“We are now confirming once again that playing with fire—and they are like small children playing with matches—is a very dangerous thing for grown-up uncles and aunts who are entrusted with nuclear weapons in one or another Western country.”

So countries with nuclear capabilities should be more responsible and perhaps not invade their neighboring countries? 🤔

alcoholicorn , in ruzzia is the only country unaware of the gun problem in the US

A few things

  1. Nobody has the force projection necessary to invade the US, nobody even builds their military with that goal in mind.
  2. WWIII doesn’t have to involve Russians going into your house for the US not to be unaffected, while we are a net food exporter, the majority of that is animal feed. We import most of the food you see in grocery stores, tons of parts for our power grid, refineries, and other vital infrastructure is imported too. The Yemen is managing to shut down US-aligned shipping off their coast with drones and missiles, despite getting indiscriminately bombed with US bombs and planes for a decade.
  3. Occupations suck for the guys getting occupied. Iraq allowed 1 machine gun per family. Do you think the Iraqis had a good time when we occupied them?
  4. Nukes.
quixotic120 ,

Also nontraditional warfare that has technically been seen but not really (at least in an officially acknowledged way, maybe something like stuxnet?) like offensive cyber warfare. If things truly came to trading blows russia does have very talented cyber espionage folks and the us has shown many times that it has pretty shocking vulnerabilities on many critical points of cyber infrastructure. these probably haven’t been attacked because it would be a literal act of war to go after the power grid, weapons systems, water delivery systems, etc but if the gloves come off then you better believe these systems start getting attacked by state sponsored actors who will never come anywhere near american land

I worked in IT for 20 years. I became a handyman and have 7 geese.

strawberrysocial ,

Are geese good animals to have?

FauxPseudo ,
@FauxPseudo@lemmy.world avatar

Yes and no. They are much cleaner than ducks and they can be exclusively fed on grass once they are feathered out. This makes them unbelievably awesome in addition to their guard dog ability. In the springtime you get giant goose eggs. Which is a big perk. Since we got our first two geese we have not lost a single chicken or duck to hawks. Which is why we got them. We were losing 1 to 3 a year just to hawks.

The downside is that like all birds they poop everywhere And their poops are more undigested grass than runny stuff. And in the spring when you get those giant eggs the geese can become extremely aggressive. This means separating them from the other birds to prevent injuries and it means learning how to wrestle geese in a safe manner. And it means always being on guard. You will not be safe on your own property.

But for me the benefits far exceed risks. They pay for themselves. They give giant eggs, they stop hawks, they mow the yard, they require no feed.

Got_Bent , (edited )

There were a bunch of geese around my grandparents’ house when I was a kid. God those things would torment me. They had free range of the property and I tended to completely avoid the area they hung out because they were hyper aggressive and would chase after me every time I got anywhere near them. I was six years old, so it felt like they were as tall as me and they were definitely faster.

It wasn’t so bad once I got a little older, a little taller, and relied more on my bicycle than my feet for movement.

Nonetheless, those things gave me childhood trauma to the extent that I still can’t stand geese some forty five years later.

FauxPseudo ,
@FauxPseudo@lemmy.world avatar

If they’re not tormenting you, they’re not doing their job. That’s their niche. They have one job.

Hadriscus ,

Not safe ? what do you mean, a goose can hurt people ?

FauxPseudo ,
@FauxPseudo@lemmy.world avatar

Only if they see you

Hadriscus ,

Wait really, they represent a danger ?

FauxPseudo ,
@FauxPseudo@lemmy.world avatar

Geese are legendary for their attack skills. They aren’t bad most of the year but in the spring they will mess you up if you get too close. You can go to YouTube and search for “goose attack.”
