Ah, I love counterstrike uh… 4? (I lied, cs gameplay feels bad)

SrTobi ,

Tried to play yesterday but too many other people had the same idea… We’ll, going to tried in a few weeks

barrbaric ,

If Counter-Strike 2 is so good, why is there no Counter-Strike 2 2?

macisr ,

There will never be a Counter-Strike 3 I can tell you that.

LiveLM ,

I’m personally waiting for Counter Strike: Alyx

Psythik ,

So do you think the game is worth getting back into now, or should I just give up all hope at ever being half decent at this game?

Last time I played was in 2014. Started as a Silver I, and worked my way up to Gold 1. I was never a competent player. I feel like if I try to get back into it now, the game will just be full of the same old players from past CS titles and I’ll still stand zero chance of ever getting gud. Or do you think the sequel will bring in enough new players that I might do alright?

CluelessDude ,

Yes and no, if you enjoyed your time why not? If you are thinking about features then no… The game is still very early open beta sort of feel atm it has the core gameplay but some things might feel off, and most game modes are missing, granted you haven’t played in a while so you might not notice any of this, I say give it a shot, the skill difference exists in all games but I’m a believer that it is what makes you passively get better.

Psythik ,

You’re right, I didn’t notice that anything was missing until I started reading threads here and on the Steam forums. I’m having fun playing casual.

CluelessDude ,

Glad to hear! I’m also enjoying it, don’t let others opinions ruin your fun, I’m eager for the release of workshop things and server content so I can play around with them on my own server.

Ravaja ,

If you’re trying to be good, stop right there. You can become competent, you can grind nade lineups and do hundreds and hundreds of scrims or hours of warm ups and aim training and movement training, and there will ALWAYS be someone better than you, you will NEVER reach the top of the mountain. If you’re playing to have fun and are having fun with the game, you should play, because counter strike IS fun, but after getting out of the grindset, all I see when I look at my friends play is how little fun and joy they’re actually getting out of the game and it’s depressing as shit, don’t be like them

Psythik ,

Don’t worry I don’t bother with all that shit. I practice by playing deathmatch. I just want to be good enough to stay out of silver this time around. That’s enough for me.

macisr ,

I just play it for fun now. Try harding it made me miserable. But yeah, there are a lot of new players and it is a new ranked system so you might climb higher.

Psythik ,

Been playing casual. Doing a lot better than I thought I would. So now I’m wondering if I’m better than I thought, or if casual matchmaking is skill-based as well.

mub ,

I wondered what was going on when Steam said Counter-Striker 2 successfully updated.

    Maybe they just renamed the successor to 1.6? 🤷

    isVeryLoud ,

    I think so, I heard they nuked the CS:GO listing, so they probably reused the same listing.

    woelkchen ,
    @woelkchen@lemmy.world avatar

    they probably reused the same listing.

    From the first announcement of CS2, it has always been clear that CS2 would be an update of CSGO: theverge.com/…/counterstrike-cs2-valve-smoke-gren…

    Thank you, I hadn’t come across the announcement yet, first I’ve heard of CS2 is here and today :P

    I would gladly travel back in time to 2012 tbh

    cybermass ,

    I really wish they had fixed the movement, considering it’s supposed to be a tactical shooter I would love to see some sort of footstep mechanic but it’s still ice rink battle simulator.

    PHLAK ,
    @PHLAK@lemmy.world avatar

    That wouldn’t be Counter-Strike though.

    cybermass ,

    I disagree, the whole point of counter strike is for it to be a tactical shooter, anything to make it more realistic is in its original vision

    BirdyBoogleBop ,

    Counter Strike has never been realistic though.

    PixxlMan ,

    The original vision is not the current vision. Visions change.

    sock ,

    realistic has no place in video games

    or if we did then we’d have to make it so the cs people run based on each individuals physically abilities and depending on where shot the blood loss would kill you anyways unless your teammate managed to bandage you get u out of fire and into a triage but by then the bomb wouldve exploded. except with realism its just a remote bomb that doesnt have a code to be defused with. if you make a wrong step you twist ur ankle and u cant walk normally anymore for that round. also you would only get one life then you have to uninstall as is life.

    also footsteps cause motion sickness and its unfun and unsmooth lol. and tarkov is realistic and tarkov sucks dick

    krolden ,
    @krolden@lemmy.ml avatar

    Counterstrike 1.6 has great movement

    Astroturfed ,

    Yessssss, counterstrike is fucking counterstrike. It hasn’t changed in any drastic way in 20+ years. There’s plenty of new games that have all the realistic bullshit.

    TheAnonymouseJoker ,
    @TheAnonymouseJoker@lemmy.ml avatar

    I am inclined to say CounterStrike has been “enshittified” with the removal of GO, and version 2 being made. CS2 seems to be GPU reliant, as opposed to every single CS/HL title before that used to run atleast no stutters 80-100 fps even on a midrange laptop from 5-6 years ago with no GPU.

    This is a sad moment, and probably the death of probably what was the last great gaming title that democratised competitive gaming.

    Thankfully I grew old just in time to have quit gaming for a few years now, and no longer need to bother with it. I will play my good old Mario Forever community fanmakes, NES/SNES games, those pre 2008 PC games once a week.

    JustEnoughDucks ,
    @JustEnoughDucks@feddit.nl avatar

    Lol it’s more like “no more shitty 1 way smokes that make enemies have a very stupid advantage due to a glitch”

    towerful ,

    Enshittification is about increasing monetisation of a previously free/cheap product.

    Adobe moving from a lifetime purchase to a subscription service: enshittification.
    Adobe not supporting old GPUs: not enshittification.

    Twitter locking rate limits behind subscription: enshittification.
    Twitter rebranding to X: not enshittification.

    Raspberry Pi prioritising business customers making SKUs rare and enabling scalpers: enshittification.
    Raspberry Pi moving to a new version of Debian making many tutorials outdated: not enshittification

    Ensittificstion is the process of a platform good for users becoming good for business customers, becoming good for investors/shareholders.

    Whilst it is a cool phrase, and an interesting observation, enshittification doesn’t apply to everything that has a core change.

    Enshittification would be mandatory ads in-game, some sort of P2W mechanic.
    Requiring better hardware is not enshittification.

    TheAnonymouseJoker ,
    @TheAnonymouseJoker@lemmy.ml avatar

    Requiring better hardware for an almost insignificant upgrade (high quality smoke textures, bullet poking through smokescreens), compared to previous version of the game (CSGO) that can run at 80 fps with a common midrange 2016 laptop CPU (i5-7200U) and no GPU, absolutely counts as enshittification.

    I am not one of those users that overuse the buzzword of the month for social validation purposes. You can search the number of times I have used that word using Lemmy’s search feature.

    towerful ,

    Ok.
    CS:GO, a game released in 2012? Runs well on a 2016 laptop.
    CS2, a game released in 2023 can run well on a 2027 laptop.
    I don’t think that’s the argument you want to make?
    And I still don’t think it’s enshittification.

    TheAnonymouseJoker ,
    @TheAnonymouseJoker@lemmy.ml avatar

    No, the argument is CS has been CPU reliant before CS2. This is what should have been kept, allowing for democratised CS gaming even on potatos, which has been a tradition since forever. CS2 seems to have been made GPU reliant, which is the reason for reported performance differences from CSGO.

    This is the basis of my argument.

    CS is not a game or a competitive FPS, it is a tradition, unlike most games. It is what Unreal or Tekken or KOF or many Arcade classics used to be.

    towerful ,

    CS has always needed a GPU.

    CS:go required anything DX9 compatible with 256mb VRAM. Which would be an NVidia 6600, a midrange GPU from 2004 - around the time CS Source was released.

    CS2 minimum spec is a GTX650. Which is a mid range GPU from 2012, around the time cs:go was released.

    Something of a pattern there…

    If CPUs didn’t have integrated GPUs, this whole “cs is CPU dependent” thing wouldn’t apply, because you would STILL need a GPU.
    It’s just that intel bundled a barely passable GPU alongside the CPU.

    TBH, I think you are missing you’re argument.
    You should be arguing that there is no way to play cs:go now that cs2 has released. Meaning a potential hardware upgrade requirement.

    That is a bummer. That’s pretty shit.

    But it is NOT enshittification.

    That does not claw back value/money from customers to valve or its investors.
    Unless you can show me, beyond reasonable doubt, that Valve is making money from giving away CS2 for free to anyone that has purchased cs:go through the requirement of a hardware upgrade.
    Until then, this is not enshittification.

    Is it shitty? Sure.

    fluckx ,

    I hope it’s more stable than the limited test I’ve been playing. Hopefully comp is not limited to premier, but you can pick the maps you want to play on.

    The hitboxes feel really weird. Sometimes it feela like the bullet went straight through people repeatedly ( e.g.: with a scout ) other times I seem to hit something I’m convinced was a fatfingered miss.

    woelkchen ,
    @woelkchen@lemmy.world avatar

    I hope it’s more stable than the limited test I’ve been playing.

    At least practicing with friends+bots is broken as of today. I guess that’s what you get when the beta program only targets die hard competitive players who don’t care about anything the casual majority cares about.

    I think the worst bugs will be remedied very shortly now that a wide user base has access to the game.

    The hitboxes feel really weird.

    From what I’ve heard, this could be that new sub tick system where inputs are handled as closely to real time as possible but the animations are not (it would be too compute intensive to do that as well, if I understood correctly).

    Lockely ,
    @Lockely@pawb.social avatar

    It’s really wild that they straight up nuked CS:GO for this and it both performs worse on higher end machines (reports of stuttering when ragdolls activate or shaders load in are rampant) AND it’s missing the casual war games modes like Arms Race.

    Still , (edited )
    @Still@programming.dev avatar

    well they kinda had to nuke csgo as you can’t transfer inventories between games

    the game is so fucked tho, on my 1060 I could play csgo at 1440p low at about 200fps, cs2 I’m lockynto get 100 on FSR performance

    and zooming with scopes are fucked get about 300ms of stutter every time

    lazynooblet ,

    Buttermilk ,

    Nah, it’s mainly to transfer the Steam marketplace, I.E the thing that makes the most money for Valve out of Counter Strike.

    redhilsha ,

    Though, I’m on LInux, I’ve yet to try it out on windows

    Intel A770 with stable mesa drivers, can get around 100-130fps mid settings at 4K in CS2, but got 200+ solid and just ran vsync on at 144Hz 4K very high settings in CSGO. Maybe it’s just the Linux build (which notably received zero public beta testing) but my friend said the Windows version was lower frames on his AMD 580 than CSGO too.

    Donkter ,

    I for sure drop frames on low settings with my low-end machine.

    Pretty well overall. Performance is pretty solid on most games I play now, VRR is fixed finally, and I don’t get graphical glitches. I bought it a month or so after it came out and it was rough in the beginning, lots of crashes and glitches.

    nicetomeetyouIMVEGAN ,

    Same. I’m fine. I’m also not very obsessed about fps. As long as it’s smooth I’m good.

    it looks a lot like the last one, not very excited

    naught ,

    Thats kinda the point! New engine for new cool features and graphics but same core gameplay. They’ve improved a lot of things. I think the CS audience is excited for this, but they haven’t done anything over-the-top different to attract net new players

    Cornpop ,

    They kind of have behind the scenes. For one they eliminated the need to bind jump throw with the console, and made it a skill check instead. A lot more visual cues as well including foot step audible distance is now shown on radar. They added a lot of little things that make the game more friendly to new players that don’t need to play for years to develop a feel for certain things.

    lowleveldata ,

    I played a few matches. It’s still the same de_dust2.

    CalcProgrammer1 ,
    @CalcProgrammer1@lemmy.ml avatar

    Some of the other maps got significant layout changes. Dust 2 remains the same because dust 2. If they changed the layout on that map I’m sure they would get a lot of angry competitive players.

    Polar ,

    It is the last one. It’s quite literally just an update to CS:GO.

    They just updated the engine a bit, but it’s the exact same game.

    Cornpop ,

    It’s an entirely new engine built from the ground up.

    BlinkerFluid ,
    @BlinkerFluid@lemmy.one avatar

    It’s kinda a sport now. Valve has a model to stick to. Improving it beyond graphics is risky.

    JJROKCZ ,

    It’s just a graphical and engine update, it’s version 2 not a full new game. They’ll be able to make lots of small improvements over the next decades but the color gameplay hasn’t changed in 20 years and won’t change for 20 more because it doesn’t need to.

    sturmblast ,

    the all that does is reinforce my point

    JJROKCZ ,

    I mean, it’s a free update, you don’t have to be excited or even play it. If you don’t like it then there are plenty of other fishes in the sea as they say

    woelkchen ,
    @woelkchen@lemmy.world avatar

    it looks a lot like the last one, not very excited

    I don’t think it’s much about excitement and more to converge their games on Source 2 engine. Dota2 moved years ago and it was barely a footnote for casual gamers. This time the switch is more noticeable and for the time being even a regression (which some vocal people are very mad about which I don’t get about a free game).
