(Disclaimer: I’m a Phoenix supporter of SWG)

I’ve followed this drama pretty closely in the last few days, and it’s really not all so damning as others here have found it. I could write up something longer, but I don’t want to get too far into the weeds, so I’ll leave it at a few paragraphs.

The long and short of it is that the way this video was made and posted, in combination with the general atmosphere of the internet trending towards Huge Drama™, makes this look like more than it actually is. From everything I’ve seen and heard, I’d characterize Nick’s actions as “flawed human making mistakes” — which is to say, perfectly forgivable. He’s since owned up to the more egregious things, such as his comments in the Gameumentary call, and the folks at SWG have reined in his influence recently due to things like his social media troubles. I personally feel like this was a very good call, and will likely be enough to cover the complaints raised.

It is also worth noting, though, that not all of the accusations are worth much. I really don’t know how $10 in alleged Twitter bucks is even worth mentioning, especially considering the claim later looks to have turned out to be a misunderstanding entirely.

All in all, while I believe it’s very fair to want to address these things, and it’s also fair to want to do so in a way that Patreon supporters both existing and potential can use said info to make better assessments with regard to their money, the reality is that the method and platform upon which these grievances were aired lead to a far more bitter and unproductive outcome than was necessary. I still respect Frost, and I don’t think he meant for this at all, but it still happened. Such is the nature of the web, sadly.

DebatableRaccoon , in Around 50 of 100 Tango Gameworks Staff Moving Over to Krafton - IGN

Which means around 50 didn’t want to work for Krafton or already found jobs. Good for them.

LukeZaz ,

Though I hope you’re right, there’s no guarantee of that:

It’s unclear why the remaining approximately 50 staff didn’t join Krafton, but it’s possible they had already found jobs elsewhere as the studio’s closure was announced three months earlier in May 2024.

Just dug out my PSVita. I’m feeling like a little Metal Gear today might be in order.

theangriestbird OP , in Actors demand action over 'disgusting' video game sex scenes [BBC]

Just in case you skip to the comments: the complaint is that actors are not being told anything about what game they are working on or what kind of scenes they will be doing. Then, they show up to the studio and they are asked to do explicit sex scenes or sexual assault scenes day-of with little warning or time to consider whether they are comfortable with that.

Dudewitbow ,
atro_city ,

What a shitty title to the article. It should be "Actors demand action over unanticipated video game sex (and rape) scenes". Especially if the actor may be a rape survivor, asking them to act that out without any warning is idiotic at best and harmful at worst.

MentalEdge , (edited )
@MentalEdge@sopuli.xyz avatar

Ok yeah that’s really fucking uncool.

There are absolutely actors who are down to do that stuff but you can’t hire people with a script sight-unseen and just drop stuff on them that might straight up give some people a panic attack to even think about, let alone re-enact.

Title makes you think there are actors who don’t want games in general to contain explicit adult content, but this is 100% reasonable, and yet another reason voice actors and game industry workers need to unionize.

I bet your ass the same shit is happening with asset creators and animators.

bjoern_tantau , (edited )
@bjoern_tantau@swg-empire.de avatar

I think they actually are unionized. At least in the UK. That’s what some of the Baldur’s Gate 3 actors said when asked about the anti AI strikes. They can’t participate because of the rules of their union.

If I recall correctly there is even a sentence in the article about the British union starting to tackle this issue.

MentalEdge ,
@MentalEdge@sopuli.xyz avatar

In some countries, some people, in some parts of the industry, are unionized. It’s not even close to being the norm. It’s only slowly starting to happen.

Sure they are, however if you come to the conclusion (if you decided to read the article) that voice actors being told with no preparation that they were going to be performing scenes involving SA are whiny babies you’ll be told you’re not being nice which is what we expect on our instance

Actors want some action?

“I turned up and was told what I would be filming would be a graphic rape scene,” she said.

"This act could be watched for as long or as little time as the player wanted through a window, and then a player would be able to shoot this character in the head.

What game is this even? I mean, why would any game need a graphic rape scene? Who is this going to sell to?

Don’t video games outside of Japan try to avoid getting AO rated any more?

Sounds like some typical David Cage bullshit. Wouldn’t be surprised at all if it was one of his games.

Edit: Considering the content of the games, and looking over her IMDb credits, it was very likely one of The Dark Pictures Anthology games, which was actually my second guess after David Cage (well, those or Until Dawn; same developers) due to some of the weird shit Supermassive Games add in for “shock value” because “horror”.

No surprise that she suddenly stopped working with them after House of Ashes, so that was probably the game in question, if I had to guess by context here.

There are only a handful of studios that’ll throw that kind of shit in their games. Quantic Dream and Supermassive are always the most likely culprits.

pop ,

Why do games even need actors to do rape scenes? I know games do motion capture and such but rape scenes? Just make 3D models and go wild.

Something’s definitely fishy.

julianh ,

I mean, that’s not cruelty free. Someone’s still gotta animate that. And most good animators either act scenes out beforehand and/or use reference footage.

Oh their wish for action might actually be fulfilled. No voice actors needed for this anymore very soon.

Origins was my favorite entry in the series, personally.

I’m still playing Caveblazers. Can’t believe I’ve gotten almost 10 hours out of a game I got for 99 cents, but it’s fun.

I picked Satisfactory back up because I keep getting part way in and losing focus. Just unlocked tiers 5 and 6! In the process of setting up hypertubes to my major locations.

Maybe a bad time to pick up the game again, since 1.0 is releasing next month, along with the story/campaign, so you might just get to do it all over again!

Linktank ,

Yeah I’m about to the spot where I normally get stuck right now. So I probably won’t make much progress in that amount of time anyway. I guess we’ll see!

I played Tunic last December and loved it, and while I found a lot of stuff, I definitely needed some help to get the good ending. I was definitely glad to have done so though.

There’s just so much hidden goodness inside! My last playthrough has me struggling less, and I found more, but apparently I just wasn’t thorough enough

That game is awesome! I loved the tutorial book system so much.

Diablo 3: Season 32 and Diablo 4: Season 5 shenanigans. I'm doing pretty well in both, more so in D4 though; I am wiping the floor with my Necromancer.

I decided on playing through Alien: Isolation again. I only have two achievements left for it on my PC, so once I knock it out I can uninstall and free up some room for other games. But man, I forgot how terrifying this game can be. I always have called it the best stress I have ever experienced in a game, and it still holds up, even when I know where to go and what to do. I'm spending most of my time crawling around on the floor, lol.

It’s been Deadlock the last couple of days since I got the invite. Not sure if I’ll stick with it. The game has potential but I think I might be too bad at it to ever have fun playing it. Farming is insanely important and between lacking precision aim for last hits and not understanding neutral camp flash farming strats I guess I’m just always behind on economy.

I do alright in fights themselves and feel like I can theoretically perform with a couple of heroes at least, but that doesn’t really matter once you get out statted.

Maybe I’m just getting too old for fast paced shooters, it’s been a while since I played one.

Went through the ports available on my retro handheld and saw they have all three Descent games from back in the 90s so I’m playing through all of those.

jecxjo , in Let's discuss: 8-bit Era Games
@jecxjo@midwest.social avatar

Back then i only had a few games but among all my friends we had a pretty good collection. As an adult playing on a retro console I’ve started to go through a lot of the games i never tried or didn’t own and only played a few times.

While I’d say the total NES library is a majority of garbage games (publishers just figuring out how to make games, not how to make good games) I think the big thing i noticed is that the good 8bit games look and feel drastically different than the garbage ones. When you learn the history of the games then it makes sense.

The quality of the sprites, the extensive design of menus, transitions and other interactions, the storyline and dialogue. Even with only 8bits and crappy resolution the output for many of the good games actually looked and played well back then and even now. But I’d say about 90% of the NES catalog was garbage back then and still is now.
