Beyond Good and Evil.

winterstillness ,

Strongly recommended! It’s one of those rare games where you don’t want a “sequel” because there’s no way it would be in the spirit of the first game. Especially today.

ag_roberston_author ,
@ag_roberston_author@beehaw.org avatar

Wouldn’t say no to a HD remaster though. That’d be nice.

(And I don’t think Beyond Good and Evil 2 is ever releasing)

winterstillness ,

I really don’t want “2” to be a thing. The “trailer” felt like an insult for using the Beyond Good and Evil name for marking. There was nothing about it that had the spirit of the first game.

If there ever is a remaster, then I hope it keeps the original artistic style. Lots of remasters get this wrong.

The rare instance where you can be grateful for development hell.

noisetricks , in What forgotten cult classic games are worth revisiting?

I don’t think it’s fair to call it a cult classic just yet since the game is rather recent, but eventually i think Kenshi. It’s a really fun game although very grindy and i’m not even sure which genre it belongs to. Also it’s very moddable to fit even more to your preferences. It’s been quite a while since i played it, but i’ll share a little story: I started the game for the first time and i wanted to make a “waifu squad” consisting of only women so i did. Worked my ass of mining copper and selling it in order to hire more ladies. Eventually my two ladies started to build a base near where i was mining copper and then one day, the “prayer day” (or whatever it was called) came and an army of crusaders came to spread the word of god. The bishop asked my main lady if there was any men in this settlement and of course i answered no there is none. To them it was blasphemy to not have any men in a settlement and the army slaughter my two ladies like it was nothing. Too bad i lost this save since i’ve gotten a new PC because i would’ve wanted to go on with my vengeance story, but maybe i’ll fire it up again.

Kit OP ,

Was the experience you described multiplayer or were those NPCs?

that_one_guy ,

They’re NPCs. Not sure about mods, but the base game doesn’t have any multiplayer.

Absurdist sandbox?

It’s a game I’ve never managed to get into, but it can be rather wild to watch others’ antics.

@BuboScandiacus@mander.xyz avatar

Fallout New Vegas, I still haven’t figured out how to gain xp effectively.

perishthethought ,

Ugh. Yes. It’s one of those games where the devs thought we would learn by doing stuff, but instead (imo) I was really flailing around, guessing what to do 90% of the time.

I got stuck once when I attacked a Caesar location and beat them, but then would be randomly killed by this group of three soldiers who would appear anywhere I went. That whole game was frustrating for me.

Kolanaki ,
@Kolanaki@yiffit.net avatar

The best way to level up in New Vegas is doing the powder ganger glitch right at the beginning of the game.

Basically if you do the first quest in good springs with Ringo and the powder gangers in a specific way, you can keep turning the quest into the powder ganger leader dude indefinitely. Max out your entire character in like 15 minutes.

moral_imperative , in What forgotten cult classic games are worth revisiting?

EarthBound for the SNES is one of my favorite RPGs. Very original for its time in terms of setting and battle mechanics. Also, Ness from Smash Bros. is in it!

winterstillness ,

Such a weird game! The artstyle and just the “weirdness” of it is out of this world.

I’m not a fan of turn-based battles, but this is on eof the few games (including Chrono Trigger) where it’s legitimately fun. To this day I still think about it.

Jdreben ,

Have you played Eastward? Unless I’m mistaken Earthbound is part of the game and plot. If you like Earthbound you might like Eastward. I enjoyed it even having never played Earthbound but I’m sure I missed a lot of references / analogies.

moral_imperative ,

I played Eastward and really enjoyed it, even though I thought the ending was bittersweet.

I’ve heard reviews compare it to EarthBound and I guess it reminds me of EarthBound stylistically, but plays more like Zelda or something.

There’s a game within the game called Earth Born that plays like a fast-paced Dragon Quest. It’s an interesting game. :D

MarioSpeedWagon , in whats a game that you got significantly far into, only to realize you were doing something wrong or missing a key feature/ability altogether?

I played through all of mirrors edge when it first came out (10 years ago?) without realizing you could pick up a gun.

xthexder ,

To be fair, that game really isn’t about shooting or even taking out enemies. Taking their gun only slows you down!

I should go play that again. It’s got a great atmosphere (and soundtrack)

Kolanaki ,
@Kolanaki@yiffit.net avatar

Doesn’t Mirrors Edge have a forced tutorial at the beginning and it literally requires you to pick up a gun at some point? 🤔

I went into Undertale completely blind and played a couple of hours before I realized you could get through every encounter without killing anything. I kind of gave up after that because I felt so bad.

NeccoNeko ,

It’s actually an important mechanic. How you play changes the game’s ending and you get a chance to try again. It’s meant to be played several times different ways, so you didn’t do anything wrong. :)

Lowbird ,

Yeah, agreed. Even if you complete a full run with some kills, if you then replay as pacifist it will a) go a lot faster and b) a heck of a lot changes.

I think it’s actually meant to have 1 playthrough middling and then 1 playthrough pacifist, partly because of the way the Toriel fight tries to trick you. Partly for this reason I don’t like telling people to play pacifistically out the gate, even though apparently this can backfire.

Dymonika ,

A couple of hours is not that far in. I would strongly recommend that you restart and play a pacifist run because that leads to the best, most comprehensive ending.

There was an old PC game called MegaRace. Somehow I changed my controls and set steering to Left was Right and Right was Left. I never noticed this for the entire time I played it.

When I bought Test Drive 4 the first race I proceeded to drive straight into a wall. After struggling for a while I went back to MegaRace and instantly realized what my issue was.

Fast forward a decade or two later after doing only console racing games, proceeded to buy Dirt Rally and use my keyboard and muscle memory kicked in and drove straight off the track. I basically have to set driving games I play keyboard with to reverse steering. Thankfully a wheel, seat, pedals, and shifter have alleviated this problem in my current life.

ur_dad ,

And I thought I was weird for having my vertical controls switched for shooters. Lol.

Icarus ,

Never understood you southpaws lol

SenorBolsa , (edited )
@SenorBolsa@beehaw.org avatar

That at least makes sense, like I can wrap my brain around the idea that the control from behind the camera about the axis of the lens means it would be inverse and would thus feel ‘correct’ to a certain number of players.

I got good at mirroring controls on the fly from Mario kart on the DS, that weapon basically had no effect on me.

Though if you put upshift over downshift I will lose mind. Upshift is always X and downshift is always A for me on the Xbox layout (cross/triangle) also screws me up when real cars do this, upshift should be towards the rear and downshift should be forwards. That’s how most sequential gear shifters are configured in race cars. Ostensibly because you are downshifting under deceleration and upshifting during acceleration.

Icarus ,

Man that game was so weird and quirky! It was fun, but I also remember having problems exiting the game for some reason lol. It’s available from GOG if you ever get the itch.

Shout out to Fishery (309 reviews). It’s pretty niche as an aquarium simulator, but very relaxing and well made.

Also, Ozymandias (770 reviews) is a great strategy game that manages to squeeze the feeling of a full game of civilization into less than one hour.

If you’re interested in classic board games, The Conquest of Go (397 reviews) is a great entry point into Go, with nice tutorial features and a campaign mode that scales difficulty as you win games.

This is a good list! I’ll be checking some of these out for sure. I also have some overlooked games of my own I’d like to list. No links since I’m on mobile, but I may edit them in later.

Qbqbqb (30): Simple arcade game with nice animation and catchy music.

Goetia (496): Spooky point-and-click with some very good puzzles in my opinion.

Under Leaves (530): Relaxing hidden object game with a nice art style. Great game to play when you’re stressed and want to turn your brain off.

Year Walk (1197): Horror adventure game with an off-putting atmosphere and interesting art style.

The Last Door (1541): Horror point-and-click adventure game with a lovecraftian feel.

Hieracosphinx OP ,

Wow, I can second The Last Door being great, but I don’t know most of these. Thanks for pointing them out!

Herctic ,

+1 to Year Walk, I remember playing that on an iPod Touch when it first came out. I love Simogo, with games like Device 6 and Sayonara Wild Hearts, they make really unique games.

Thanks for bringing out Goetia. I bought it back when i had to have any sounds as a distraction, Goetia being very silent at times drove me off almost instantly.

Just seeing that you mentioned good puzzles was enough to give a real go. 3 hours later i’m loving it.

Ghostcity ,

I’m glad you decided to give it another shot! It’s one of my favorite adventure games and I never see anyone discussing it.

tshannon , in Got a game you feel passionate about? Sell it to us here!

Natural selection 2. The game is pretty much dead now, and it is not easy on new players, but no other game I’ve played has this awesome sense to teamwork and coordination with intense combat. It kind of ruined all other multiplayer games for me. I haven’t found anything like it.

followthewhiterabbit , in Got a game you feel passionate about? Sell it to us here!

OP what do you think about Xenoblade Chronicles X? Have you played? Is this an okay one to ‘start’ with?

Usually I see mecha and I am all in, but haven’t played yet! Would love to hear if you have played it.

richyawyingtmv OP , (edited )

I got it on launch and was disappointed. I wanted a sequel to XB1, and got a game with a mute create-your-own main character and a story that had literally no connection to 1, if you could even call it a story. It’s barebones. Since then, my opinion has changed and I love it. But it’s a very different beast.

it’s all about exploring, mining for resources, taking on quests, inventory/gear management and battling monsters on foot and in massive custom mechs. It’s incredible. But it has some serious downsides, and some serious WTF music choices by Sawano, although the majority of his soundtrack is awesome.

I’ve got it playing on Cemu at the moment, still holds up.

Edit: your mech (called a skell) can fly. And turn into a car. And there are zero loading screens as you explore the gigantic world. At all. It’s mindboggling that it even existed on the Wii U (the world engine was later used for Zelda: Breath of the Wild).

Edit edit: the game also had multiplayer when active on the Wii U. Being able to jump into other teams and help with quests is something they need to bring back.

ReynT1me , in Got a game you feel passionate about? Sell it to us here!

Pathologic 2 is a game that makes you feel like the entire world is against you. From the moment you start the game you’re presented with a scenario in which you’ve already failed to stop the deadly plague infecting the city, and you get a chance to do it all over.

You are Artemy Burakh, a surgeon coming back home to his home in the Russian Steppe at the request of his late father. From the moment you arrive in town, things are off. You are quickly branded as a criminal and must hide away or risk being attacked by citizens. Slowly but surely, you keep encountering strange things in the town: an impossible spire stretching into the heavens, a building where an infection has seemingly taken over the walls, a band of children who have broken away to form their own gamg, and the plague itself speaks to you - warning you about the devastation to come.

The game is brutally tough. It has difficulty settings if you struggle too much - but the intended difficulty is meant to crush your will to continue. While fighting off the plague you must manage your own hunger, thirst, and health. Which becomes increasingly harder to do as the plague grows in strength. In addition - at the end of every day the game randomly rolls who in the town gets infected with the plague and for those already infected they could possibly die. Everyone, including you, and I mean everyone in the town has the potential to die. You are tasked with keeping them alive.

On top of that the game is an excellent journey into the psychology of those you meet, and comments on the blend between the supernatural culture of the steppe and the growing industrialization of the city. There’s so much stuff there in the game (mind you there is some jank), and its the kind of game I think about all of the time. Also the soundtrack is beautiful and haunting, with the perfect emotion for each scene.
