Sometimes i wonder why some Android devices has very tight security in bootloader ? Android is just linux with fancy UI & linux is meant to be freedom to do whatever you want since you own that device
Tbh…in the end Android feels like what windows did…no freedom or whatsoever
I am not sure what that is, but I would like as a final product a map showing the route taken. I can’t wait for the next opportunity to drive a distance to see what “MapMyDrive” provides.
It is a standardized file format specifically for recording GPS coordinates along a path/route. Many third-party applications on all different platforms can import these GPX files and display them on a map.
How nice does the user experience have to be? OpenTracks is a decent app for recording GPX tracks (if some map application supports importing tracks from outside the app, it will definitely support GPX), but that’s the only thing it does - you don’t even get a map in the app.
Well the map is the whole point. I tried out MapMyDrive today so now the only question is can I screenshot the map it gives and get that to my computer.
I get that, but my understanding was that you want to be able to see the map after the trip, not necessarily during it. Which is pretty much what I do with OpenTracks - record my trips and then import them to NextCloud where I can see a big map of all of them combined or look at some specific ones. And there’s plenty of Android apps that can import GPX to do the same.
But if MapMyDrive works well for you, then it’s a moot point - enjoy what works.
I took MapMyDrive on a longer drive. It seems to have an issue where the app just shuts off at random times. I don’t think it is a ‘free version’ feature, and I am not sure that it is not my OS shutting it down after it is no longer on screen. Ti will be ok for trips where I am not driver and navigator at the same time (driving alone) as passenger/navigator I can re start it before to much ground is lost.
How does Nextcloud help you see a map? Or, is it only a way to get the data to your computer? If it is only the way to get the track into your computer, what turns it into a map? OpenTracks creates tracks in the phone eh?
Oh Opentracks cost $ in the playstore. oops. It’s not much tho.
I like how they do the reverse psychology, at least for me. I have still the urge to press the non highlighted button, because in my time the “Buy”/“Go to play store” button was highlighted and this is just reversing this.
To avoid driver distraction, these ads do not pop up, expand only if they’re tapped on, and disappear quickly after a short time.
You know what's even better and legally positive to avoid driver's distractions? Not having any popup whatsoever happening during navigation. It doesn't matter if you need to interact to view more or if it disappears after a while, it shouldn't be there in the first place.
There is no popup whatsoever during navigation. The alleged popup screen is actually what appears when you yourself click a pin (whether normal or sponsored). Nothing ever pops up by itself.

My question here is directed to other readers: I find the traffic layer in Gmaps to be my most used feature for local navigation. It’s the one feature I really do use every day before I drive home from work to decide which way I’m going to take to get home.
I see there are tutorials to define a map overlay in OsmAnd for traffic using Google’s API that are dated from a few years ago. Has anyone here successfully done this, and do these tutorials still work in 2024?
Right? I’m sort of bought into Google’s ecosystem at this point, so I understand my Devil’s Bargain. I pay for their services, and in return I expect not to be hassled with ads or penalized for suppressing them on devices I own. I use their services because it’s convenient for me today, but at this point I’ve diversified my online footprint so that I could feasibly walk away and do without the conveniences.
Sticking ads in my face in Nav mode would be a bridge too far, but we’re not there so it’s cool.
Of course they probably feel differently. That’s their problem.
The meaning is that the card appears when you tap a pin. “Pop up” sounds like something that appears by itself, which is not the case here. It does “pop up” when you want it to, but you’d agree that’s not what people would think if you described it as a “pop up”.
Okay, that’s a better explanation. Thanks. So a pin on the map appears, and that’s all? I will say that it’s annoying when you’re searching for something and maps keeps auto selecting some featured search. I noticed that happening about a week ago.
Pretty neat, though I prefer something like Mozilla’s or Have I Been Pwned’s offerings but AFAIK those only concern themselves with published breaches, not the actual data being actually traded/sold/uploaded somewhere.
If something isn’t popular enough to get people to develop custom software for it, then there won’t magically exist custom software for it. Just buy something that already has rom support
