TheInsane42 , in How many apps are installed on your phone other than system apps? List your top ten daily used apps.
@TheInsane42@lemmy.world avatar

Wow, phone…

used apps:

  • Business calendar 2
  • Signal
  • Waze
  • Authy
  • AH (shopping app)
  • OpenVPN for Android
  • ZoomFX
  • Banking app

That’s about it, it’s almost always laying unused on it’s fixed spot. It has the smallest available subscription, as 0 min and 0 MB is a tad to low for me.

My main devices are my tablets, used for gaming and reading.

  • CSR Racing 2
  • Discord
  • Liftoff
  • World of tanks Blitz
  • World of warships blitz
  • Business calendar 2
  • OpenVPN for Android
  • 2 local news apps

When I look at it, I don’t even reach 10 used apps, let alone most used apps. (unless I combine, and then barely) And I installed Lineage on all with the smallest gapps set I could install without loosing store access.

eugenia , in Should I delete the Google app from my phone?
@eugenia@lemmy.world avatar

There is no point disabling the google app when the rest of the phone runs on Google services, and the rest of the google apps. The tracking will happen regardless. If you don’t want to be tracked by them, you need a de-googled version of Android, that doesn’t run their apps, or their services. I’m currently using /e/ OS, an Android de-googled fork, by Murena: murena.com on an older Motorola G7 Plus. No google apps, and I make a point of not installing any popular app that depends on google’s services. I only use open source apps found on the f-droid open source store. Yes, that means that you won’t have games, or FB or IG, or twitter (unless you use them via the browser). But I don’t need any of that. I now only use fediverse open source apps, plus the basic phone apps found on the Murena eOS, like email and notes.

Google’s inability to stick with something despite its flaws and working on making it better over time, but instead constantly scrapping and renaming services is why I don’t bother investing in any of their experimental projects. Why should anybody waste their time getting used to something if google is just gonna ditch it after a while.

Devgard , in Google's messaging mess continues: Chat app now wants to be the next WhatsApp

Google shouldn’t be trying to push Chat as a WhatsApp and teams competitor. It’s hard enough getting people to adopt the normal Google Messages app.

slazer2au ,

Ideally google should push for a regulatory investigation into Meta for their market share of Messenger + WhatsApp.

Every year we see either messenger or WhatsApp at the top of communication tools in all countries apart from east and south east Asia.

Can’t wait to see Google rename or kill Chat because it’s not gaining traction as expected.

We can’t even get to a point where we have 3rd party apps supporting RCS on Android. I don’t really trust Google’s ability to deliver on and continue to support new products.

For Reddit it Gremium, with a single pay reasonable price.

jcb2016 ,
@jcb2016@lemmy.world avatar

It's probably a low one time purchase. Remember it's a top tier third-party app!

Nollij ,

That’s how Boost for Reddit was. Free with ads, or a small cost (~$5 or so) to use ad-free, forever.

I don’t suppose I can migrate my previous purchase to this, can I?

emuspawn ,
@emuspawn@fernchat.esotericmonkey.com avatar

That’s what it was for Boost for Reddit. I used it for years adfree after a one time purchase.

Aaron ,

If it’s anything like Boost for Reddit was, it’s unnoticeable. Every 20 or so posts you’ll see an ad and just scroll past, no animations or sound. I think I recall seeing a bottom banner? Any other Boost users confirm? I really just ignored it so I can’t recall.

My point is, ads were non-obstructive

Widowmaker_Best_Girl ,

I was a free boost user for a year. Yeah, there was a bottom banner. I don't recall seeing ads on the scroll by though?

BiggestBulb ,
@BiggestBulb@kbin.social avatar

There was definitely a bottom banner but it was quite unobtrusive

Wander , in Android's devices without Google services, you can use it?

Check out something called Aurora store which lets you install app store games without the app store.

pe1uca ,

Just remember to not use your main account if you need to use one, since Aurora store breaks the ToS and they’ve actually banned some people.

Nice list, I was bit worried at first it’d be all roguelikes because of the first 3 games.

Total Party Kill looks really original and interesting, looking forward to try it.

I’m also surprised My Friend Pedro is on mobile and free. I’ve heard of it and thought it’s a normal indie PC game.
