Freedom was when Telephones were still with a cable attached to the wall, before the dependence on always being reachable with these snitches in your pocket.

And we only got that because of government action, forcing Ma Bell to allow folks to use their own equipment.

SlopppyEngineer , to memes in The Extra Mile

Going the extra mile is a good way to never get promoted because you are too valuable in your current position.

lightnsfw , to memes in The Extra Mile

I don’t go the extra mile for the company. I do it to help make things easier for my coworkers and the people who depend on us in the hope that I can make life less shitty for everyone.

Hideakikarate ,

I do a little extra because I know my other coworkers fuckin’ won’t. I tell my new hires that you’re not working for the other shift but rather for when it’s your shift again.

Wogi ,

I have 40 hours a week at work.

I spend them trying to do a good job.

I have no fucking clue what people mean when they say they go the extra mile.

gst0ck ,

Sometimes it’s as small as clean up your work area for the next guy. That’s seen as the extra mile for lazy people.

Colonel_Panic_ ,

I think most people would consider things like, working over 40 hours when you are salaried, routinely doing someone else’s job in addition to yours (like fixing their mistakes TOO much), skipping your lunch breaks to work.

Don’t get me wrong, doing those things SOMETIMES is ok. It’s when it becomes expected or ongoing that it’s a problem. Because no company is ever going to say “You are generating more profit for us at your own expense, slow down.”

Honytawk ,

The thing is, it is not your job to make things easier for others.

It’s the company’s job to keep their employees happy by providing enough workforce for the amount of work that needs to be done.

You are doing exactly what the company wants you to do, by playing into your emotions.

Just so they don’t have to.

lightnsfw ,

This is exactly the kind of moronic attitude that is making life shittier and shittier for everyone on the fucking planet.

I am not talking about just cranking out extra widgets or whatever. I’m talking about looking for problems and taking steps to resolve them before they escalate into something worse instead of just leaving it for someone else to do, I’m talking about taking time to answer questions for my coworkers so they don’t waste an hour trying to figure things out on their own, I’m talking about collecting data on issues we’re having so that when I take it to the boss I have numbers to back up what I’m saying instead of just generic bitching about the job so that they will actually take it into account and look for solutions.

My main beef with smartphones is how easy it is for OEMs to completely lock that piece of shit and make it impossible for anyone without lots of patience and a hacker mindset to get root permission to uninstall bloatware, or a custom rom. “Oh, but you can do that on phone XYZ!” - But you can’t with nearly every other phone

Am I too old that one of these should’ve been Skype?

I abandoned my chat to make a new one in Discord. Despite them complaining about Skype daily for years, suddenly they loved Skype.

Humans are silly. Either way, it’s been Discord, Snapchat, and regular text for half a decade now.

webghost0101 ,

I didn’t known Skype still existed and i thought I was getting old.

Sorry dude.

blanketswithsmallpox ,

Riven ,

I literally had to bring all my group kicking and screaming onto discord literally within the year it launched. Same story, non stop bitching about Skype but all of a sudden nobody wanted to try discord. I straight up had to send a message to all of them saying I’m uninstalling and dropping my discord link if they wanted to play. Over the course of a month they all switched over, couldn’t be happier.

Why is it always people that use android bragging about that people that use apple don’t want to communicate with them and completly ignore them. And right after they go play ps5 exclusives.

Trollception ,

Honytawk ,

Because there is no such thing the other way around? Its only Apple that does that shit.

And what does Playstation have to do with anything? The last one I had was PS2

vane ,

Playstation or Nintendo have no open hardware or software you can install on those products so why Apple is different from them ? Only because they make mobile phones or PCs ? If they decide they don’t do PC or mobile phone and rename their products to something different, abandon standards that in fact they established and then market their products as it’s not a phone people, it’s not a pc, don’t use it if you want a pc or mobile phone, would this make people feeling happy ? That’s stupid.

Am I the only motherfucker that goes on walks in nature anymore??

MystikIncarnate ,

I do sometimes but I usually carry my phone. Sometimes for music, sometimes just got emergencies.

There’s not a lot of good walking weather in my area though. So it isn’t common for me. Spring and Fall are fairly short now, and summer/winter is usually too hot.

IDK. I used to do it more often.

Classy ,

What kind of climate do you live in? I’m curious what area you’re in where the outdoors is too unforgiving. I love walking on doors in any kind of weather, although I understand if it’s prohibitively hot and cold someone wouldn’t want to walk in that kind of weather. I often keep my phone on me too, but I find myself so distracted by nature and the change of scenery in general that I don’t even think to look at it. It’s pretty easy for me to disconnect for hours at a time, if not just to make sure that my family hasn’t messaged me for something important.

MystikIncarnate ,

You can probably infer the climate from my instance name.

Canada.

This year, winter has been pretty unpredictable. We had a bout of 10C weather, bookended by snowfall both before and after, all within about two weeks… The rest of the season has been equally unusual. Summer last year went into the 30C range, far too warm too be comfortable outside no matter what you’re wearing.

Most winters are well below freezing. This year was very strange.

Spring and Fall are usually nice walking weather, but the last few years it seems like both spring and Fall temperatures have been a “blink and you’ll miss it” kind of deal. It sticks around for maybe two weeks then straight into summer/winter.

Global climate change is really screwing with my ability to enjoy the outdoors.

“Okay but the guy who goes the extra mile will get a promotion and do better in the long run.” —a guy who has always gone the extra mile, never gotten a promotion and is doing exactly the same as everyone else

Bakkoda ,

I got a new job last year. It was a massive pay cut. 1/3 of what i was making. Skip to the end for a TL/DR.

I hit the ceiling hard at the old job and people i had never worked with or worked with only a handful of times had basically all said i was uncomfortable to work with because of my pace. I’m a walk and talk guy and if i was hired for a job (I’m a long term contact worker) I was usually hired because someone else had started a project and here i am. I was a fuckin one man wrecking crew. I work amazingly well with just about everyone because i find their strengths and weaknesses and immediately (and usually subtly) just start with the weakness, get the ball rolling and by the time there’s momentum they are back in their comfort zone. Aim them and let em go. I work with management, i work with operators and I’ve worked with janitorial staff to solve really shitty problems quickly and mostly painlessly. Apparently that means I’m doing jobs other people should be doing (eg currently and actively employed) which rubs them the wrong way. I’m contact, dgaf. That’s a wall of text bitches.

TL/DR i know it’s easy to say money isn’t everything but it can definitely be a trap that promotes some bad/unsustainable life choices. Recognize its unsustainable and have a plan.
