Libpurple had constant breakage due to proprietary apps having no incentive to keep their protocols stable. A lot of it worked easier then since no one was using e2ee either. Newer gateways exist in the space but it’s a real shame since for a brief time the earlier 2010s, most chat applications were using the same protocol—until they realized it’s harder to capture profits when the garden walls are lowered.
Freedom was when Telephones were still with a cable attached to the wall, before the dependence on always being reachable with these snitches in your pocket.
One of my 1st employers had “extra mile” coupons. Originally worth 7.50 in store credit, then 5, then they disappeared. This was a company that was charging 6 dollars for asparagus water.
I do sometimes but I usually carry my phone. Sometimes for music, sometimes just got emergencies.
There’s not a lot of good walking weather in my area though. So it isn’t common for me. Spring and Fall are fairly short now, and summer/winter is usually too hot.
What kind of climate do you live in? I’m curious what area you’re in where the outdoors is too unforgiving. I love walking on doors in any kind of weather, although I understand if it’s prohibitively hot and cold someone wouldn’t want to walk in that kind of weather. I often keep my phone on me too, but I find myself so distracted by nature and the change of scenery in general that I don’t even think to look at it. It’s pretty easy for me to disconnect for hours at a time, if not just to make sure that my family hasn’t messaged me for something important.

This year, winter has been pretty unpredictable. We had a bout of 10C weather, bookended by snowfall both before and after, all within about two weeks… The rest of the season has been equally unusual. Summer last year went into the 30C range, far too warm too be comfortable outside no matter what you’re wearing.
Most winters are well below freezing. This year was very strange.
Spring and Fall are usually nice walking weather, but the last few years it seems like both spring and Fall temperatures have been a “blink and you’ll miss it” kind of deal. It sticks around for maybe two weeks then straight into summer/winter.
Global climate change is really screwing with my ability to enjoy the outdoors.
Some people are passionate about always doing the best they can, and they get a great deal of satisfaction from it. I love being excellent at what I do.
I don’t have a wife or kids. My jobs are a huge part of my identity. Heck - my night job teaching is something I do because I want to do it, not for the little bit of extra money.
But I also know that I’m weird. Most people just want to do their job and go home to their families, and that’s great. They’re doing the job, so they should be compensated every bit as much as the people like me who are devoted to their work.
Nah, I get it. I’m much the same way - I don’t do things half assed - just not made that way.
That said, I’m also not going to eat the corporate brainwashing gruel. The higher up you go the more you see people just flat accept stupid corporate decisions as ‘enlightened’ and they heavily adopt the corporate lexicon. Who needs a critical eye when you fit in?

While I realize there are rules, structures, and culture in place. They shouldn’t hinder people. IDGAF about how someone does something as long as the product is technically sound, reads like Tolstoy, and was efficiently created.
I work a shit ton of OT, but I get paid 1.5x or 2x based on circumstances for that extra time
I deliver the same quality of work on ST and OT—my best, but I would never work unpaid OT (e.g. some of my salaried engineers have been living at the job during our system upgrades) or do things well beyond the scope of my job.
I inderstand fully. I used ti go through the same. At the same time I noticed a big difference when i got married. And a huge one when i had kids. Having a child and being responsible for it is a life changing situation. I tell my self that i became an adult not when i turned 18 but when i became a parent. When this happened to me, my perspective about work stoped revolving about being the best, and turbed to be just and help others be better. That made me soon to realize that those 2 cannot get always together.
I have a friend that will only chat with me on Instagram. I have his number, but he will never respond to text. He only engages in insta, it’s mildly infuriating.
