California’s Great America theme park in Santa Clara, CA, USA - but the comic strip is from “Peanuts” and dates back to 1991 as far as I can tell: www.gocomics.com/peanuts/1991/02/07

The original author / cartoonist, Charles M. Schultz, did the comic himself from 1950 - 2000 with no assistants - so I guess this one is authentic. Maybe if he were alive today he’d be a fan of this community! Or maybe he’s just expressing a child’s point of view.

Jesus, I really miss Hawaii.

Kauai was more my vibe, slower paced, more chill, but Maui was a good experience too

Gearheart , to piracy in preach

Unsure if anyone can clarify. But my understanding that simply downloading a watching isn’t an issue.

Selling illegally copied content is what can cause real legal issues.

I’m uncertain of any cases of anyone getting in trouble for simply watching copied content.

Example… 1st user pirates movies or videos and uploads them to YouTube or any streaming company.

2nd User then streams or downloads them to watch them offline. I’ve yet to see the 2nd user in this scenario face legal consequences.

Vs

2nd User then streams or downloads content and makes money off it. Here I see the 2nd user have legal issues.

Again I’m just a regular guy going based on regular guy logic.

Kinglink ,

Downloading and watching is a crime. One night be able to say they didn’t know what they were downloading but likely the file name and site or torrent is a good clue that’s bullshit.

Your probably discussing chance of getting caught. You likely will see a DMCA complaint or something like that to your ISP at worse for downloading but enough of these might get your service terminated (some ISP don’t care.)

Sharing the files and usually sharing a lot of files publicly or semi publicly will get you more attention and that will get the media companies more likely to take you down as a distributor.

VPN and smart browsing habits will reduce a lot of this risk though.

Think of downloading is one star in GTA. They will chase you if they are you. Uploading is two stars when they start shooting at you. Profiting of it is like three stars and that’s when they get more aggressive. You can get busted at one star but it’s just very unlikely.

Digester ,
@Digester@lemmy.world avatar

Copyright infringement laws vary but even though simply downloading copyrighted material is against policies, it’s hard to enforce and most copyright holders don’t always find grounds for a lawsuit or it’s straight up not worth pursuing. You downloading a movie off a website is the same as a friend of yours sharing the same movie with you on a USB stick.

Actions against unauthorized distribution of copyrighted materials (especially if it’s for profit) on the other hand are much more easily enforceable.

He has a valid point there. If he doesn’t want to say , you keep talking the same shit and expect a different answer?

Jamie ,
@Jamie@jamie.moe avatar

Not wanting to answer a question is fine, but doing that by just being pretentious isn’t a good way of going about it. Being forthcoming about not really wanting to talk about your music preferences is fine, changing the subject politely is also fine so you don’t leave the onus of carrying conversation entirely on the other person.

Acting like your music choices are too out there for anyone else to understand is a good way to not have them relate to you in any way.

Right. He could have countered with different topic.

SnowGlobal , to pics in Fibre optic cable ducts look kind of neat

How many fiber cables do they put in each one of those ducts? There’s 15 ducts and let’s say 5 cables each, 75 fiber lines is a ton of bandwidth!! Lots of room for expansion there.

tortoise ,

I did this for work a few years ago in New Zealand and they run them through neighbourhoods with enough for each house and spare ones for errors and expansion. Particularly in commercial areas because some businesses need multiple lines.

The fibre itself is a piece of glass the size of a strand of hair with infrared shot down it, but with the casing it looks similar to that small blue one poking out there. Can’t remember exactly how many but that’s the size of a single line so you can fit a lot of them.

SnowGlobal ,

Wow ok the fiber line that runs into my house is way more shielded and bulked up than that little blue one, so my estimate was wayyyy off. So yeah hundreds of strands could fit in there. How often do they put a switch in neighborhoods? Maybe less often than I thought!

tortoise ,

They run through boxes dug into the ground and that’s where a connection is made using electrical arcs to weld the two ends of glass together and keep them housed. Then the business end tends to go to a telecom building either directly if it’s a small town or through their current system the copper was on.

It’s been a few years I’m a little sketchy on the details obviously lol but thought I might as well jump in the discussion.

SnowGlobal ,

Right on, thanks for the info! I consider this a moment of great success for young Lemmy- on r/ regardless of the topic there always seemed to be someone with experience who would show up and share some of their knowledge. And this feels like the same thing here in a fiber cable laying thread. Cheers!

tortoise ,

They’re used to be; now it’s just puns and jokes for the most part. I loved that about reddit and I hope Lemmy thrives in this way too

dixius99 OP ,
@dixius99@lemmy.world avatar

When they installed it to my house, they left some of the bare fibre lying on the ground. It’s a little thicker than the fibre you see in those “fibre optic flower lamps”, but not by much. If I’m not mistaken, the blue wire you see in the picture is to help detect the cable after it’s buried.

tortoise ,

Good catch, that’s exactly what that is. Just to clarify my Job was to take it from the boundary of the property and finish the connection so I’m not super knowledgeable on those main lines but the fibre shot through them to us was about the size of that blue wire. There’s also a type that goes along phone lines instead of underground and that’s a thick black one with Kevlar in it.

The saturation is cracked to hell. I love the photo otherwise but the sky is not that deep blue at that elevation.

laxe ,

Is it unrealistic to allow only unedited images in the competition?

spindrift ,
@spindrift@lemmy.world avatar

Saturation and exposure isnt really “editing”, because all photos must be developed from the raw data. Most of the time your camera develops it automatically (and often get things slightly wrong), and many people like to develop raw photos themselves vith apps like snapseed.

Oversaturated photos should be considered flawed, but not disqualified.

Imo.

Alchemy OP ,
@Alchemy@lemmy.world avatar

I agree, if we start getting too particular we are drifting over into c/photography’s realm.

tentphone ,

I agree, it would be impossible to enforce any rules on color adjustment in a fair way. There’s a lot of variability in terms of what is captured in camera as well as subjectivity in terms of what is most faithful to the actual subject even if the intention is to be 100% realistic, which is not always the case.
