Man. I stopped going to movies when they started showing ads before them. If I pay you, you don’t get to double dip with advertising imo. To see this is ludicrous, and I hope they all fail.
That’s a humorous take, because I’ve known so many people who went to see crappy movies because of the movie previews for something they liked. This was way before the internet took over as a way to see videos, but still, interesting to note the opposite.
I just joined through lemmy world and I’m using the Connect app on Android. Just installed Mastodon too. I’m just going to be checking out everything I can, and I’ll probably go try to learn more about this whole fediverse thing because it’s all new to me.

I think it looks and feels nice, but I’m encountering all sorts of errors in literally every app (including wefwef, that decided to stop working completely as I tried to open it 5 minutes ago). While trying to comment right now, I got errors twice (this is from Connect for Lemmy).
IMO memmy is super nice and polished (the best app so far), the lemmy.world servers are pretty hammered at the moment, but they are due for an upgrade in the next few hours, so theoretically everything should get better. wefwef is pretty cool too
Going to the cinema has become a luxury at this point, like (classical) theatre or opera. Which is not a bad thing per se, but the industry should stop complaining.
Mine is still working, logged out. Maybe it's because I don't update apps very often given how many times an update turns up to be a downgrade with no way back. (Android)
I think you just go to the top of the page and click “Create Community.”
Im brand new here as well, but my guess would be to start posting stuff about whatever your topic is, links etc so people who run across it have something to participate in. I imagine its kind of a labor of love in the beginning but if its not super niche I’m sure you’d show up on searches.
What are you looking to make? It may already exist on another instance and you can just sub there if it already has users.
I’m a little hesitant for big growth, came with the first wave of Redditors back when the news was fresh, but I’m trying to be optimistic. More people means more content, after all.
I also miss the niche subs, and ngl also my snoovatar, he was a nice little guy.
Not literally though. But I have to say it’s giving me nostalgic feeling of old reddit when it would struggle to keep up with inflight of new users/activities.
The community here feels significantly more wholesome than Reddit in recent months. It’s nice seeing a lot of meaningful conversation without hate and spam.

I don’t want to sound like a cynic but so was reddit in its early years. We were all rallying for a cause on the great digg migration. It felt great to be part of that movement (or whatever you want to call that). I do hope Lemmy keeps this spirit up for as long as it can.
The last time I went to a movie was whatever year Once Upon a Time in Hollywood came out. I honestly don’t even know where or if a theater is located anymore.
I’m glad my daughter is an adult because we still had the second run dollar theaters when she was little. So… Many… Animated… Movies
I’m about to go completely devoid of simulation. I cut cable in 2009, just cancelled Netflix, will not renew Amazon Prime (there appears to be an all or nothing refund for cancelling mid-year and I’m in the morning category), just left Reddit, deleted Facebook years ago, never had Instagram, Twitter, tic-tac, or any other social media.
The only thing that’s still worth anything to me is Spotify, and I won’t be surprised if they pull some shitty shenanigans in the near future.
This isn’t really malicious compliance. This is the very foundation of the point made by the Supreme Court. You should be able to refuse service to anyone for any reason. Anything less than that is the government engaging in violence to force you to work.
Not just any business. The decision was specfically about what they called ‘expressive activity’ such as graphic designers, artists, speechwriters, and movie directors.
I mean - there are protected classes, right? You can’t say “no whites” or “no Jews”, I’m not a religious man - but where’s the line between a political ideology and a religious one?
Or am I totally mistaken and this is completely permitted in the states?
Not any reason though, the case didn’t change any of the protected classes like sex, religion, or sexual orientation. It just made it so a company can choose what “expressive work” they want to do, especially websites. So it’s legal to say you don’t want to make someone a custom website if you disagree with the contents of the website (ie a website that supports gay marriage), but it’s still illegal to refuse to make someone a website because the customer is gay. You can choose what you make, but you can’t choose who you sell it to
I’m not sure what point you’re trying to make. Are you just disagreeing with the ruling, or something about my interpretation of it? To be clear, I’m not arguing for or against the ruling, just explaining what it means
I don’t think it’s a smart decision. I think discriminating for any reason makes business sense nor will it win you any allies, but it should be legal. Anything less than that is the government forcing you to work.
