If you can afford it, cough up the money for a laser printer. I’ve had mine for years and only changed the ink once. So much better than ink jet printers, which are a total scam
I think the earlier ones were great, too. Jokes aside: people have been saying how much better Brother printers are (used to be?). I only heard positive comments about them, but even my HP laser printer is just a reliable workhorse. Or at least it has been in the last 2 years. I’ve been trying to convert people ever since (to laser printers, not HP).
Old HP laser printers (20 years ago) were tanks, unstoppable workhorses. I had a 4000N that was virtually unbreakable. But they’ve been coasting on that rep for a long time while they changed to inferior hardware and predatory subscription practices. Nowadays they are so enshittified I can’t imagine anyone will even be buying HP printers 20 years from now. I went to Brother for my last two printer purchases and they just work. Look through this thread or any other printer thread for “brother” and “just work”. It’s not an accident.
First I read 4000N as four thousand Newtons and it even felt appropriate, considering its supposed weight (Mass? Force?). Yeah, you can read everywhere how shitty HP is with printers nowadays. I just wonder what other owners of relatively new HP laser printers think, because in my 2 years I haven’t seen anything dodgy yet. I hope it stays that way crosses fingers.
Tried to fire up an older HP monochrome laser printer that is still working perfectly.
The problem? Windows 11 has no drivers, and it literally cannot be used at all. Not through Wi-Fi (old drivers, too), not through the USB port, or my shared through my router.
I mean, seriously, this stuff should work on a generic print driver until the end of time, but nope.
Hot news, linux is incredibly compatible with printers. CUPS is very well designed. With relatively little technical knowledge you could probably plug a raspberry pi into virtually any old printer and get it running with the Pi as a print server sharing it with the network.
It’s actually been the case for 20 years now. Same with lots of other devices.
Around 2008-ish I saw a Tesco-branded webcam for something like 5€. I was just in need of one, so I looked up if it’s not, by any chance Linux compatible. It was, right out of the box.
Same thing with Sony Ericsson phones of that era. Capable of lots of things, like Ethernet over USB or Mass Storage, but with Windows it all needed a massive and annoying driver package. Linux - plug and go.
we’ve done this with our router at home. Plug the printer into the router’s USB (has to be direct tho, doesn’t like a hub) and then install the drivers on my mac and it works. Even though this printer is an ancient brother.
Which is kinda funny if it’s easier to make a printer that can print objects vs a printer that can print on surfaces. Like it’s harder to draw a picture of an object than it is to create an instance of that object.
The idea is pretty ironic. If one was patient enough, they could design a CAD machine that would write out their prints. I believe I had seen them before. The problems with that machine are speed and efficiency.
The latest update to the printing press: adding a 3d printer to print new plates, and a recycler to reuse that plastic once you’ve printed your page.
Uses 10x the energy, recycled plastic gets junked because of ink contamination, but still 25% cheaper than running an hp inkjet because you can use bulk ink and don’t have to keep replacing your dried up CMY inks to stop it from refusing to print your black and white document.
In fairness, it’s pretty smart, IMHO: one of the big difficulties in getting a social site started is getting a critical mass of people together to sustain conversation. Facebook already has plenty of Instagram users, so giving them all access to Threads seems like a pretty good way to bootstrap Threads.
I’m afraid I don’t have an account of beehaw and I don’t have any bookmarks either but essentially they pose themselves as “neutral” but they are the far-right definition of neutral. The first issue was their terrible excuse to defederate from lemmygrad.ml, they weren’t sincere at all, they just kept making it look like they were doing some sort of “good thing”, from that point they kept removing any strongly left-wing comments and banning users who disagreed with the american narrative of world events.
As an alternate viewpoint: admittedly, I haven’t been super involved there, so maybe I missed some stuff, but I haven’t seen anything like what that person was talking about. Lemmygrad are a bunch of tankies, the dumb shit they say makes the left look bad. From what I understand, people on the right seem to hate Beehaw because of their strong moderation policy.
I’m pretty sure the person you replied to is just a triggered tankie. “disagreed with the American narrative of world events,” means, “they removed my Russian propaganda posts.” I would take what they say with a grain of salt.
Oh lol, I hoped over to beehaw briefly to check it out abd…yeah it doesn’t seem to line up with that comment, strong moderation yeah, but ah well. Thanks for providing some additional context!
That other reply/summary is a pretty biased hot take. Click on that user and see where he’s coming from and you might see why. I’m not on Beehaw, but I’ll take a shot at doing better.
Beehaw has the goal of being a “safe space” on the Internet: no harassment, no trolls, very supportive of marginalized groups, etc. So they’re heavily moderated, but they have (or, at least had) a small mod team.
When the Reddit exodus started, with the sudden flood of people to Lemmy overall, two of the bigger instances, .world and shit just works, had open/instant registrations without any verification. Apparently people were signing up on those two instances and harassing/trolling communities on Beehaw, and their small mod team was overwhelmed trying to keep everything within their stricter policies. They said the mod tools available to them currently don’t allow much granularity, so about the only thing they could do is defederate from the two instances, and that’s what they did.
They said they consider it temporary until the tools or situation improve to the point where they can better handle it.
I personally think their goal is noble, but I’ve never seen anyone succeed at making a completely safe space on the Internet, and I’m not sure a federated instance is the place to make one, but good on them for trying.
To be fair it’s not really “falling” - Lemmy instances are not in competition with one another due to federation.
Understandably people want to feel like they “won” somehow, but this isn’t something you really need to worry about on the Fediverse, it’s more like everyone working alongside each other.
It doesn’t appear like they value growth for growth’s sake. And that’s cool because it lets them focus on other, arguably more important, stuff. Many of our preconceived notions about social networking don’t translate well to the federation model.
I’m as leftist as they come but I think it’s their prerogative to defederate from any instance they want. If you and/or your content are not welcome there you should respect that. It would be kind of authoritarian otherwise, wouldn’t it?
Censorship is not what’s happening, because you’re always free to express yourself in countless other spaces if you want. That does not mean that they’re are forced to read what you say.
I actually quite like having Beehaw being proactive about their users’ safety/ mental well-being.
I wound up making a second account on Lemmy.world so I can see what’s going on in the larger Lemmy community, but I also appreciate being able to browse and post in a safer environment. I just wish the Lemmy back-end had more nuanced federation/ defederation options and better mod tools so I didn’t have to make a second account to browse the extended Lemmy community.
Edit because my first draft was just being sarcastic. I am pointing out how useless your comment was for discourse. The person you replied to never stated anything about communism, they were just pro-defederation for beehaw. They didn’t even specify “pro defederation from lemmygrad”, just that they like the heavy moderation. You then called them a red scare apologist for nonsensical reasons. So since you are pro-federation with lemmygrad, I jumped to the conclusion that you are a genocide denier, even though you never said anything of the sort. It’s useless conversation, it in no way moves the conversation forward, and all it does it make you feel superior.
He said the following “Beehaw being proactive about their users’ safety/ mental well-being.” in the context where I said beehaw persecutes the left. Does persecuting the left equal protecting anyone’s mental health? It does, if you support the Red Scare.
Also, which genocide? The genocide of indigenous population in the United States? Black Genocide? Jew genocide by the nazis whom the right defend so much?
EDIT: by how quickly this was downvoted I can tell the person didn’t even read the post.
I’m hoping the great guys at .ml will approve my registration there. Setting up a backup account and would prefer it be there with all my stuff subscribed and ready, just in case.
That’s a cool project, it’d be interesting to see a time-lapse video through full daylight hours (with a couple extra frames at the intervals when the numbers are clearest).
