I like Jerboa so far. I haven’t experienced any lag But it’s annoying that when I go back to the list of posts or comments, the cursor automatically jumps to the top and I don’t want to scroll back to where I’ve been.
You pay based on the location of the seat in the screen. The cheaper super saver 5.99 seats are more near the front and if you want to further back you would have to pay 7.99
I’m reminded of when Voat was gonna replace Reddit. I’m still skeptical we’ll get a lot more users migrating since things over there seem to have stabilized. But this is an exciting time for Lemmy to try some new things and fix what was broken with reddit.
IMO it doesn’t need to replace Reddit for everyone or grow to be a direct competitor. As long as there are enough users to keep communities active and discussions going, it’s a nice alternative for people who want to get away from Reddit or other social media sites. I like that threads are active for longer than a few hours before dropping off, and since posts are slower I don’t find myself mindlessly scrolling. Lemmy feels more like a mid 2000s forum but with better usability.
I agree. I miss the old internet, especially the forums of the early 2000s.
It seems traffic from those forums largely shifted to Facebook, which I will never understand. I find societies lack of concern for having at least some privacy baffling. The photo bucket debacle felt like the final nail in the coffin for those forums.
Reddit became a fair alternative though as the popularity increased the quality of discussion decreased. As with all things internet over monitization has killed it.
I’m hopeful for the future of Lemmy, can’t wait to see where this goes.
A lot of communities these days have moved over to Discord too, meaning information isn’t archived or easy to access months/years later. There have been cases of accounts being compromised or rogue mods causing trouble, and in a few seconds a server’s chat history and all associated info/guides/artwork etc are lost in seconds. I’d love to see a return to forums.
Elon Musk, the latest billionaire owner of the online screaming match known as Twitter, sat slumped at his desk, staring at a wall of monitors blinking with a technicolor smorgasbord of error messages. The reason? He’d just let Twitter’s hosting contract with Google lapse because he thought it’d be fun to see if he could migrate it somewhere else. The results? Not so fun.
A comment on Reddit had caught his eye, and he couldn’t shake it. “Every now and then Elon must have a moment of clarity. Where it occurs to him ‘Maybe I am just stupid?’ But then he violently buries the thought.”
“Stupid?” he scoffed aloud to his empty office, sending a mini landslide of Mars Rover prototypes tumbling off his desk. “I’m a genius.”
He remembered how smart he’d felt when he decided to axe the account verification system, only to reinstate it after a week of high-profile mix-ups that included the Dalai Lama being mistaken for a llama enthusiast.
And the content moderation! Who needs it? Well, as it turned out, everyone. Without it, Twitter had turned into a feral wilderness of conspiracy theories, insult slinging, and more unsolicited pictures of eggplants than a greengrocer’s catalog.
And then there was Kanye. “Free Kanye!” he’d declared one afternoon after one too many rocket fuel coffees. But after the notorious rapper had declared war on flannel shirts and clogged up the site with CAPS LOCK tweets, the ban was back on faster than you can say “Kim Kardashian for president.”
“Stupid?” he muttered again, watching as Twitter spontaneously DDOS’d itself like a robotic bull in a digital china shop.
There was a pause. Then a grin spread slowly across Elon’s face, as if he’d just understood the punchline to a particularly tricky joke. “Naaaah,” he laughed, slapping the desk.
He looked at the chaos on the screens, the digital calamity his decisions had wrought, and couldn’t help but chuckle. There was something amusing about being this absurdly, cosmically, hilariously brilliant.
“Back to the drawing board,” he chuckled, picking up a Mars Rover and making it do little jumps across his desk.
We shouldn’t credit him for Tesla, spacex, etc because it’s the employees that actually put in the effort and contribute
Elon is just a Mr moneybags that thinks he smart because the things he funded have been good ideas when he actually never contributed anything to those ideas
I can’t wait until the companies he’s finding push him out completely
People call him an inventor. He’s not an inventor, he’s an investor. He’s not an engineer. He doesn’t know how to make cars or rockets. He didn’t invent the Tesla and he just plowed money into SpaceX. His brilliant ideas are things like having the Tesla make a fart noise. His experience is in coding and, based on comments of former Twitter engineers, he’s not even very good at that.
So glad I accidentally signed up on the best server. I don’t regret my decision. Now that I have WefWef, I’m sold. Love it here. Love the server. Love the community and subscribed to multiple communities in the fediverse too. Learning a lot!
lemmy.world is awesome, no doubt. But in my experience lemm.ee is faster and has less bugs, maybe you should try it out. Welcum to the fediverse ❤️❤️❤️
It’s unfortunate there isn’t really a way to migrate accounts from one server to another. You basically have to create a new account which is a bit of a pain.
Haha, the room with my 3d Printers is the only one off limits for my two one year olds. They see the printers as toys that will move for hours and I was worried about them hurting themselves in between the moving parts too much.
Depending on your little gremlins abilities to enter mechanical contraptions, you should consider child locks. Cats are like toddlers that can climb up to the ceilings.
My first cats got quite old happily and now that they sadly passed this year, we got two one year old boys and realise now how active young cats can be. It’s so much fun to play with them but they also manage to squeeze themselves into the tiniest places.
There have been major updates on each app nearly everyday and the devs are great at intending requests. At first, you could only view posts with no option to post or login.
I really like Jerboa, which has been down the past week after the latest update. It has a clean layout, can be fast, and is the best for posting but lacks in a few areas that the others have.
Connect has been the snappiest, it loads thumbnails and has a more clearly defined “thumbnail click area” to a “title text /comments click area” then other apps.I love to swipe to upvote. But, I frequently get an error some posting, which leads to double posts.
Summit had the best layout, list 2, which feels more comfortable an be the dev said he’ll add left handed mode, which would be nearly identical to rif. It has a history feature so I can go back to a post I viewed if I wanted to upvote it still. It didn’t always load the thumbnail, but I think that’s Lemmy world issue since there’s been a lot of lag this week.
Edit: I still frequently use the browser version on my phone to see my notifications and respond to posts, as all the apps give me an error while posting due to the lag.
