I think there’s a chance they succumbed to hypothermia long before they ran out of oxygen.

I really want the Vim/VS Code one - as someone who professionally devs in an MS stack, but would choose Vim as a primary text editor otherwise… it speaks to me deeply.

Traffic jams would be a whole lot less damaging if they were all electric. Just sitting there with the AC and radio on is a whole lot less emissions compared to fossil fuels.

I prefer a rock solid public transport system, and plenty of safe walking areas and no-car zones. EVs help minimally in the grand scheme, since they are costly to produce, especially the batteries.

hydro033 ,

Yea, that only works for cities. America will still need tons of cars for everywhere that isn’t a city. It’s a very low density country, all things considered.

CaptainMinnette ,

There’s large swathes of territory nearly as dense as parts of Europe with incredible public transit. Look at the density of Spain and overlay it on top of the northeast US, then compare the public transit.

hydro033 ,

Yea, but the northeast, especially major cities like NYC, Boston, and Philly, does have better public transit than a lot of the US. I know it still sucks overall (and don’t get me going about the costs), but a lot of the infrastructure was built during the car boom. People do like cars, and they make sense for most of America given how much sprawl we have.

CaptainMinnette ,

Local transit of those cities is pretty good, I’d agree. But the lack of intercity transit, like high speed rail, is such a shame.

Can you please stop posting users numbers until the bot situation is under control? Putting it like you’re doing is misleading, half of them are bots (if not more).

Unfortunately most of the communities I’m interested in are ghost towns

TheFence ,

The best way to solve that is post some links and get the ball rolling. Can’t get engagement without something to engage with. (I am guilty of not posting links myself lol)

Bro get people from reddit to use Lemmy. Create guides for boomers so that they know how to register and navigate lemmy

Hogger86 ,

Boomers and certainly gen X/older milenials are probably more into tinkering and getting it working…it guides for zoomers with their point and click tablet/ipad interface or SaaS that need guides.

As a youth of the late 80s I know bbs, forums, etc

SenorSimpai ,

I would not include boomers but I get what your saying. Gen z isn’t a monolith though and neither is Gen x. Some people are techies and won’t have a problem figuring out the fediverse. Non techie “normies” will probably get confused and write it off unless it becomes more accessible. Good thing apps are coming!

JdW ,

Create guides for boomers

lol. Babyboomers and Gen X invented and built the internet. We programmed VCR’s and could navigate dial-up settings for v90modems. Maybe write a guide for gen Z, as anything more complex than a swipe is too much technology for them XD

DrTeeth ,

Heck, genXers are the only generation who can set the clock on a VCR. A skill now lost to time and technology.

Maggoty ,

It really is just Gen Z. Millenials were programming shit and bashing everything together with hardware and software adaptors as kids. Gen Z grew up in the world of the slick interface that just works.

Puzzle_Sluts_4Ever ,

During the age wars (because that is somehow a thing…) this comes up all the time.

The reality is that most millenials also have absolutely zero understanding of problem solving. They want "a script I can follow’ just as much as boomers and genx and all the other fairly arbitrary demarcations.

Zoomers benefit from having very intuitive interfaces. We aren’t going to go backwards on that. Hell, we can already start to see the shift between “I intuitively know to swipe these menus” becoming “I just ask the voice assistant which connects to an LLM to interpret what I want it to do”. And that is a good thing.

The Internet likes to pretend millenials are all tech gods. As someone who has supported, worked with, and managed millenial, boomer, and increasingly zoomer people in even “computer science” levels of “tech”: We very much aren’t. Some people (self included) had a passion for it growing up and continue to learn how to do new stuff. Other people are basically Jen from the IT Crowd who understand enough to sound competent to complete idiots. And other people will stop work for a month if you move one of their shortcuts or get rid of python in favor of python3.

And we can very much see this with the shift to fediverse apps. Plenty of folk STILL insist that Mastodon is too complicated because… it is basically email levels of domains after your username. And those are the same people who are bragging about how they love their steam deck because they can install so many plugins and change so many settings.

hare_ware ,

No, we grew up on Vista and 8.

p00n ,

I feel there’s more nuance to this and this is an inaccurate and disingenuous generalisation.

A very small portion of baby boomers and gen x were involved in this compared to the masses who simply exist as sheep.

The “enlightened” ones are a minority in every generation from what I can see.

I also feel this whole my generation > your generation is just another mechanism of segregation. Instead let us bring forth our collective knowledge of setting VCR times and laugh about getting to the last floppy/stiffy disk in a set and finding corruption because… magnets.

Yoz ,

Lol you assume all boomers invented and built the internet ? Wait till you meet my uncle.

fluxion ,

Ditto. I wasn’t happy but I thought they’d find some sort of compromise since being reddit, the replacement for Digg 2.0, they’d surely understand they can’t just be complete twats about it. Then they started denigrating/banning their own mods… Wtf?

There are still a few niche subs I’ll have to keep using reddit for for now, but for everything else I’m happy to move on. I’ll also be cancelling my reddit monthly subscription, obviously.

MrFlamey , to workreform in Money Won't Save Them Now

It really depends which billionaires. Believe it or not, some billionaires aren’t bad people (probably). Billionaires are just people with a ton of money and power at the end of the day, and we should judge them on their actions, not their bank balance, regardless of our suspicions of how they got so rich.

However, if we could stick (for example) the Sacklers, Kochs and Murdochs in a sub and send it to Challenger Deep with just enough oxygen to get there and plenty of ballast, we’d definitely be doing the world a favour. These scumbags have a huge amount of blood on their hands, and while it would be better to see them in jail, we never will, so fantasising about their horrible demise is the most we can really do.

Endlessvoid ,

Don’t carry water for people who would let you die to increase their mountain of gold a little. What you’ve described might be true of millionaires, even multi millionaires; but no one gets to a billion dollars without stepping on those below them in the pursuit of more money than one person could ever spend in their lifetime.

Being a billionaire is pathological, if the human race was a biological organism and one part of it started hoarding that many resources, we would call it cancer and cut it out.

ProcurementCat , to noncredibledefense in More like 3-5 years

Just imagine russia miraculously amassing lots of forces on the Baltics’ border, just like before the Ukraine invasion. More and more, building field hospitals, bringing in their barrier troops and mobile crematoria.

NATO would immediatly start amassing their own troops. The baltics would be full of NATO soldiers within 3 days. Everywhere you look you see troops from about 27 countries. The sky is swarming with AWACS, tankers, fighters flying patrols, ECR and RECCE planes gathering intel and data, bombers patrolling as a show off force.

And then, at 2:35 in the night, just as the three-letter-agencies predicted, russian troops start moving towards the border. The first border checkpoint is crossed, and immediatly, hell starts raining down on the russian troops. Before they can even see a western tank, the NATO air forces start a barrage of missiles, bombs, cruise missiles. Every road into the baltics is blocked by columns and columns of destroyed russian tanks and IFVs.

russian air bases are being carpet bombed, their planes start falling out of the sky. Cruise missiles and bombs hit Moscow.

It’s 2:36.

Double_A , to nostupidquestions in Do you think the guys on the titanic submarine will be rescued?

No. Chances are high that that submarine just imploded in a millisecond and they just instantly died. Why else would it stop sending pings and completely dissappear otherwise?

Willer ,

I cant speak for myself but i think communication in general is a very well understood topic. If that fails you can just assume everyone is dead. I am not sure if the banging is real tho or if it was something else

cley_faye , to nostupidquestions in Do you think the guys on the titanic submarine will be rescued?

If they’re deep down, it’s unlikely. A good outcome would be something failed, but they could get up and are now lost on the surface, but from everything we’ve read about this it doesn’t seem likely either.
