Nice! Looks like a nice system, a little out of my price range though.

I’m sorry to hear that losing Boost has been hard! I agree that it’s more like a vacation, or possibly even an upgrade. Think bout the fact that reddit wasn’t adding features for the benefit of users, it was focused on padding its bottom-line. This meant that features on clients like Boost were often limited. For example, Boost didn’t have reddit chat or gifs in comments, probably because the API didn’t allow for it.

On the other hand, lemmy and fediverse users are driven entirely by the goal of making amazing things for the community. Clients and apps are first-class citizens, so features will roll out to all of them pretty steadily. I expect Boost for lemmy will be way better than Boost for reddit ever was.

KittenBiscuits , to cooking in earl grey bundt cake

It looks absolutely delicious! Would love a link to the recipe if you’re able to share. Earl grey cupcakes with lavender frosting were always my favorite seasonal flavor at Georgetown Cupcakes. So delicate and subtle flavors.

Do you use a baking spray for your pan or shortening/flour combo? I sometimes use a spray on regular round or rectangular pans, but I found on bundt pans and fancier pans with lots of crevices, Crisco (shortening) dusted with flour releases the cake the most consistently. I have to be obsessive though and make sure I get the Crisco into all the tiny places. I used to apply with a pastry brush but now I just use my fingers. It’s faster.

    original2 OP ,

I used this recipe with the followin changes:

    • 2 tbsp of this tea: what-cha.com/…/ceylon-earl-grey-black-tea (plus the amount needed to brew it for the glaze and syrup)
    • 2 lemons and one lime
    • 7 egg whites not 8
    • only put the syrup on after removing the cake from the tin
    • used metric ffs

I didn’t think this was differentiated enough to put it on my own website however

Definitely not me. Crazy I hear talks of MySpace making a come back. That’s one social media site I enjoyed and would love to visit again.

    0xD ,

They have never properly turned a profit - and relied solely on VC money. It was kind of “obvious” from the beginning - this house of cards of completely free services is increasingly unstable.

    nbafantest ,

Both could have been profitable overnight if they wanted to. Reddit doesn’t need 2000+ employees. It’s a simple forum, led by volunteers. It is definitely possible to run it profitably on ads and volunteer premium services.

Spez is simply a moron. Reddit doesn’t need multiple chat/messaging features. It doesn’t need NFTs. It doesn’t need to be tik tok.

    0xD ,

Oh yeah, I completely agree with that. However, don’t forget that setting up the IT infrastructure for such large sites to be performant and scalable takes a ridiculous amount of resources. And people expect snappy, quick websites with the perfect algorithm for constant dopamine shots.

That’s the reason why I think the Fediverse is the future of social media - but it’s still very young and will take a lot more work to be friendly for the masses.

    nbafantest ,

It is very noticable the snappiness/responsiveness coming to Lemmy.world. My smaller mastodon instance is generally fine but images and stuff are noticably slower.

the biggest thing to me, in terms of server load, is that reddit does not need to host videos/images. It’s a link aggregate.

I’m only a layman in this particular field, but I imagine it’s a lot lighter on resources to direct people to sites streaming video than to host and serve it all yourself.

    lamp ,

Text and database entries are, indeed, Vastly lighter on resources (compute and bandwidth). Bandwidth cost for text is practically free. Managing voting is surely not easy though; every single vote is an additional database entry which means that they cost money to store. Then the vote sorting algorithm has to run pretty frequently. Comments themselves are probably nothing compared to the votes.

But managing voting and sorting is a one-time-cost. Reddit doesn’t let you vote on old things which means that they can completely discard the votes and keep the totals and never resort ever again. They have no real ongoing costs there.

    sauerkraus ,

They could have even made a profit from third party apps if the pricing wasn’t 100x a reasonable rate.

We’re still not quite halfway through the year. I just need Zuck to require a VR hat to access facebook and I’ll get a big payout!

Firefox is wrong. That’s red panda, not a fox.

    kurosawaa ,

One of the Chinese word for red panda is literally Firefox, 火狐, that’s where the web browsers name comes from.

    acquiescence ,

Aren’t they called 小熊猫 (little panda)? This is the first time I’ve heard them called 火狐

    kurosawaa ,

Both are correct. If you check the dictionary both are listed, as well as 紅熊貓. 小熊貓 is definitely the most common word though.

squaresinger , to android in lemmy apps you should try and experiment with

Btw, did I understand it correctly that Lemmotif is only read-only and you can't even select an instance/communities?

At least I couldn't find any options.

    lolreconlol ,

That’s correct… not sure if it is coming, but that app looks great so far.

    squaresinger ,

Ok, then it's not only me. Leitmotif is easily the best looking of the bunch, but if it's read-only and I can't even customize what content it's showing me, it's sadly pretty much unusable right now.

I hope, they are going to make it fully-featured.

Zathras , to futurama in Which upcoming S11 episode are you most excited about?

I think for me, it is whichever is the first episode. IMO it really sets the tone of the season. After that, I would say Zapp gets Cancelled, because a majority of the episodes with him as a major player are pretty darn funny.
