What happened?

Rentlar ,

apnews.com/…/microsoft-crowdstrike-outage-austral…

An update to a cybersecurity software suite called CrowdStrike caused Windows machines to BSOD. CrowdStrike was big and monopolistic enough that it took out servees at large organizations worldwide.

You are a little soul carrying about a corpse.

I wonder if there is a point where the graphs of “perceived effect on the water” cross for both this experiment and homeopathy, and what that means.

southsamurai ,
@southsamurai@sh.itjust.works avatar

It means all of modern medicine is a lie, because the corpse water we drink every day keeps us healthy

What do bisexuals and asexuals prefer? Both or neither? And bold of you to assume straight women prefer cats. Ik way more straight women who prefer dogs than cats.

Makeshift , (edited )

Sexuality is “never” here: Cats.

KillingTimeItself ,

my head canon is that it’s whichever one shows up at some random non descript point in your life.

Tar_alcaran , to greentext in Anon notices

Plenty of straight men prefer cats too.

Obviously cats are better

Kiosade ,

Cats are conflicting for me. They can be cute, but I hate when they try to walk on me. Because I know if I try to move them they’ll probably scratch me. And that’s no bueno to me, just makes me anxious as fuck when they walk my way while i’m sitting on a couch trying to relax.

Zorsith ,
@Zorsith@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Dogs are too energetic and overstimulating for me to be around. I’m fairly allergic to them as well, so I have a decent excuse for the people who insist their dog will be perfectly well-behaved and calm (they weren’t).

oxideseven ,

There are some really lazy breeds out there. Like great danes. They are giant couch potatoes. You will have to give up your couch though.

Fah_Q ,

Oh my God. A cat scratch. I wouldn’t wish that pain and agony on my worst enemy. I bet when it happened you had to sell that couch because of all the memories and PTSD. You don’t need a cat because you’re already a pussy anyway.

Ookami38 ,

Guess it takes a right cunt to spot a pussy huh?

kusivittula ,

my cats walk over me like i’m a carpet. sometimes i wake up in the middle of the night with a paw in my mouth or a cats ass on my face. but they never scratch me on purpose.

Kiosade ,

It’s more when I’ve tried to pick them up, they try to dig in because they don’t want to be picked up. It’s a catch 22 situation.

kusivittula ,

my cats stick into whatever is under them with their nails when i try to pick them up

rekorse ,

Lol just keep pulling and the Velcro breaks

EddoWagt ,

Well maybe you shouldn’t pick up cats you don’t know if they don’t want that

lightnsfw ,

I always assume people that don’t like cats also struggle with respecting boundaries.

Kiosade ,

The problem is I tend to shift around a lot, and cats hate that. So i try to “nip it in the bud” to make sure to avoid the situation altogether, but sometimes they sneak up on me while watching a movie or something.

JameUwU ,

Thats why you always keep the claw trimmers around and if theyre too long you push on their toe beans a bit to expose the claw, and give it a little snip. You dont get hurt and the cat now has an objective to make them sharp again over the next few weeks

Kiosade ,

That’s good to know! Unfortunately all the cats I see are other people’s, and so it would be awkward to be like “hey before we sit down, can we trim your cat’s claws a bit?”

JameUwU ,

LOL! That makes me want to do that

bitchkat ,

And plenty of people that aren’t straight men prefer dogs.

Tar_alcaran ,

True, but that doesn’t help me espouse on the superiority of cats. How else will I gain Mittens’ approval?

Ookami38 ,

You won’t. It’s a cat. Cats never approve. Cats don’t know affection.

Corpse size has a lot to do with it. I wouldn’t swim in even a large pool with a dead human in it (knowingly), but one dead fish or rodent or dozens of dead tadpoles or bugs? Not an issue.

Heck, most household swimming pools have dozens of dead bodies in them, but they’re 99% insects.

pineapplelover ,

Now what if it’s a severed human head?

Zorsith ,
@Zorsith@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Or a couple of severed toes or fingers?

Hupf ,

What about a clipped fingernail? There’s some kind of acceptability threshold here as well.

Speaking of which, what percentage of poo would be acceptable? Does it matter whether or not it’s family?

Zorsith ,
@Zorsith@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

How distantly related we talking here? Siblings/parents or cousins? We’re not the hapsburgs, no incestuous shit eating in this pool, no sirree.

Revan343 ,

Fingernails aren’t flesh; there’s no such thing as a dead fingernail because there’s no such thing as a live fingernail. It’s like shed hair floating in the pool; kinda gross, sure, but not dead body gross

Hupf ,

Let’s say intact, whole, but otherwise clean fingernails then.

CileTheSane ,
@CileTheSane@lemmy.ca avatar

Similar to corpses, it’s not the %, it’s the accessibility: “How quickly could I be touching a corpse / poo right now?”

smuuthbrane ,
@smuuthbrane@sh.itjust.works avatar

Hard no, leaking is gross.

WhiskyTangoFoxtrot ,

What if the head was laminated after it was severed?

smuuthbrane ,
@smuuthbrane@sh.itjust.works avatar

How exactly do you propose to laminate a severed head??

richard3030 ,

Dip it in molten plastic?

smuuthbrane ,
@smuuthbrane@sh.itjust.works avatar

That’s not “laminating”.

WhiskyTangoFoxtrot ,

I don’t know, I’m just the ideas guy.

peanuts4life ,
@peanuts4life@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

The whole premise of this meme is a bit silly. If there was a corpse floating near the beach, I think most people might wait for the corpse to be removed, and perhaps even a reasonable cause of death to be determined, before entering the local area. The same is true for pools.

thefartographer ,

“Smithens, the corpse is growing near me again. Use the pool-skimmer to push it into the deep end”

smuuthbrane ,
@smuuthbrane@sh.itjust.works avatar

Ah, so corpse count AND proximity are both factors? Along with knowledge of the presence of said corpse?

oxideseven ,

And corpse size and species. The variables are piling up… This is gonna be a difficult study

CileTheSane ,
@CileTheSane@lemmy.ca avatar

This can be simplified to the individual’s understanding of how quickly they could be touching a corpse.

smuuthbrane ,
@smuuthbrane@sh.itjust.works avatar

Corpse size still plays a role. You wouldn’t want to touch a dead tadpole, but you may not even notice.

MonkderDritte ,

Ah no, a dead fish indicates that the water isn’t healthy. You should shy away from it.

HappycamperNZ ,

Like too much chlorine?

Bertuccio ,

Yeah, fish always make sure to leave the water before they die.

CileTheSane ,
@CileTheSane@lemmy.ca avatar

Fish tend to die by being eaten, a dead fish that nothing has eaten yet is a concern.

WhiskyTangoFoxtrot ,

What about a dead baby?

smuuthbrane ,
@smuuthbrane@sh.itjust.works avatar

Dead babies don’t care how many bodies there are.

The bigger the grid the bigger the impact of failure (which does happen) and the harder to get it back up.

You want a grid big enough to have some variety in use, generation, and weather, but not so big that one malfunction takes out everyone.

Aside from Texas, the US grid is just fine.

linkhidalgogato ,

What the fuck are u talking about? Do u even know what the map shows?

Zamundaaa ,

Quite the opposite, bigger grids are much more stable. When faults happen, tiny subsets of the grid get disconnected from the rest, it does not take the whole thing down at all…

CanadianCarl ,

The colors of the grids represent CO2 emissions

intensely_human , to aboringdystopia in What fresh hell is this?

A car is parked at the far end of the street. Hidden by the shadow of an old elm, and a reflection of the blue sky on the windshield, an agent patiently writes out his notes:

8:15 am A leaves house on foot 8:17 am B arrives driving and parks car (license plate: GYX 455), walks away 8:40 am B arrives, enters house 9:20 am A arrives on foot, leaves in car

This is called a stakeout. A form of surveillance.

IT folks will also recognize this as analytics data. You can almost see the json: timestamp, event name, metadata

As analytics data gets tagged to individuals, it becomes targeted surveillance.

Regular analytics is like a surveillance camera: you just see each person in a snapshot, all in the same place. You’re seeing the story of the place. Like a 7-Eleven, tracking when its customers come to decide when to make the coffee.

But modern analytics is more and more all the events about a person or cluster of people. That’s a lot more like the FBI following Hemingway, keeping a log of all his activities to build a profile.
