ricdeh , to news in UNESCO cathedral in Odessa after Russian missile attack
@ricdeh@lemmy.world avatar

Very sad. I have been to Odessa often before the 2022 war, and the city was spared major attacks for so long. But I guess that’s over now :(

Fer24 ,

Lucky person, I haven’t see Odessa

sheilzy ,

Before the Russian invasion, I’d always thought Ukraine was a beautiful country. Never been to either country, while I did notice similarities in the architecture and culture, they still had distinct enough flourishes that set them apart. Really, destroying holy sites and places of worship is a very dirty move in warfare. Doing such destroys morale. This cathedral looks like an immaculate place to visit while it was in tact. I hope places like it can be restored soon.

What does this save, like a milliwatt per year? One of the stupidest things I have ever seen.

persolb ,

Sending the JavaScript to do this literally uses more electricity than this saves.

elgordio ,

Plus all the energy used in developing the feature in the first place. What a crock.

bionicjoey ,

This is classic. Corpos that are the biggest polluters are also the ones that push hardest on the idea of “carbon footprint”

The more they can convince people that climate change is their fault, the less likely people vote for a government that will regulate the corpos

Diprount_Tomato ,
@Diprount_Tomato@lemmy.world avatar

Don’t worry, they’ll vote for a government that regulates the people and not the corpos

hombre_fundido ,

Throughline (podcast) did an episode on corporations off-loading responsibility for stuff like this onto the populace.

Found it: episode is called “The Litter Myth.”

TurtleLife ,

They can't do any good in the world. This is the best they have to offer.

SJ0 ,

It’s only going to save power if you’re using an oled, since for most lcd screens the backlight is on whether you display black or white.

All my websites are jet black, and the black is only really black on my phone which has an oled screen.

Either way, it’s just greenwashing. These companies are only pretending to give a crap so they can get brownie points with people who can’t see what they’re doing.

Redjard ,
@Redjard@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Most lcds take a tiny bit of current to darken a pixel I think. The ground state would be white and power is used to get the lcd in the state where it changes the lights polarization to get it blocked by the polarization filter in front of it

SJ0 ,

I assume that would depend on the polarization of the screen. I wonder which is more common?

Redjard ,
@Redjard@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Yes, I think it’s this way around because precision is higher at higher power, so the minor deviations close to no voltage applied are hidden in minute white variations, while near blacks are way more precise. But don’t quote me on that

AspieEgg ,

Traditional LCD screens actually use more power to make black.

OLED screens might save a tiny bit of power though.

Yendor ,

Back in CRT days, the difference between full white and full black could be as much as 100W. Before dark mode existed, people developed sites like Blackle to reduce the power usage of Googling.

5redie8 ,

It’s almost comical, especially coming from Nestlé

assassinatedbyCIA ,

Greenwashing was never about effective practical solutions. It’s always been gaslighting and marketing.

Have you created something again on lemmy.world?

It’s not possible to create a relative link to [email protected]@lemmy.world

Since it’s a kbin mag, you can link directly to it, like !2meirl4meirl

There doesn’t have to be anything at lemmy.world

I’m a bit confused by the links in your post’s text and comments. The link should be !2meirl4meirl right?

yea, but i believed i should link to the federated version within lemmy since this is a lemmy based community, no? i added the link to kbin too

Any reason for starting your own Community, vs posting at !2meirl4meirl or !2meirl4meirl ?

i am from kbin and did not see those communities, so i assumed none existed when i looked it up. this is my kbin mag. someone told me to share my mag here.

smallaubergine , to mildlyinteresting in This 1,500-year-old Cave in India was Carved out of a Giant Boulder

There's some incredibly impressive megalithic structures in India. Look up Ajanta and Ellora caves. I believe the Ellora temple is the largest monolithic structure ever created

givesomefucks ,

They’ve always had a monsoon cycle were there were periods of unsustainable growth leading up to a famine.

When things were good, this stuff is what the leaders had people work on, instead of preparing for the famines.

So…

smallaubergine ,

India historically has been pretty resilient to famines, the exception to that is during British rule there were several famines leading to the starvation and deaths of millions. The consensus seems to be that these famines were a result of British policy. I've never heard of this unsustainable growth and famine argument I'd love to read more if you can provide sources

givesomefucks ,

Only if you ignore the thousands of years of famine before the British, and the recent famines after the British…

smallaubergine , (edited )

thousands of years of famine? I'd love to read more let me know! Also I don't believe there have been any famines after the British left.

Tangent5280 ,

Periods of unsustainable growth leading to a famine? Can you quote any sources on that?

Num10ck ,

the Ellora caves deserve to be their own post. Idiots think aliens mustve built it because theres no debris field… I’m pretty sure its more likely that pilgrims took home small pieces of carved rock for centuries.
