Lemmy is becoming like what reddit turned into in 2016, no more top level actual discussion, just memes and shitposts burying the real info.

its amazing how its generally easier to transfer something to a server a country over for it to then reach the other device. instead of it going directly over local network speeds.

also how its much easier to backup to google than to you own computer thats right there.

RaoulDook ,

It’s really not if you have the right setup at home, instead of using somebody else’s servers. Like nobody has a NAS or their own servers?

It’s much nicer not worrying about who can get to my files in the cloud, when they’re not in the cloud.

EvacuateSoul ,

I do, but I VPN in, so it would be a pain to talk someone through that and send them their key.

An actually modestly reasonable amount of chips, but they were homemade and extremely seasoned. Salsa with the chips, and a squeeze bottle of a different sauce with the burrito.

MonkderVierte , (edited ) to programmer_humor in Just a dad helping out

Static, low-js, HTML tags used-as-intended, some basic CSS for formatting, responsivity and dark/light. Modern-looking accessible webpage from scratch done in half a day.

Btw, github.com/…/awesome-motherfucking-website

bisby ,

If we assume “half a day” is 4 hours, and 500 pounds. That’s 125 pounds per hour. Which isn’t the worst rate. Assuming it’s actually capped at 4 hours and we all know that if it’s your dad’s friend, this is not going to be a set and forget kind of thing. So that 4 hours quickly becomes 10. And suddenly you’re down to 50 pounds per hour. And then if it’s actually static and simple and good, you still have high odds of getting insane feedback demanding changes to make it worse. A motherfucking website would actually be the best option, but wouldn’t get you paid. At that point youre just doing it for the lols.

But ultimately, this isn’t even about the rate or how much time this will take. this whole scenario depends heavily on the son here. Is the son unemployed and living in dad’s basement for free? Then yeah. Sorry, he should probably take any work he can get for any rate he can get. His dad gets a lot more say in how things work financially if the son is relying on him financially. But if the son is already working a full time job and living in his own house? Then no, I don’t care what the rate is. Don’t commandeer other people’s time. Don’t make deals that people haven’t agreed to. Come to me with opportunities, not demands.

MonkderVierte ,

Yeah, sorry, i couldn’t resist to hint on how ridicolously overengineered most professional webpages are.

bisby ,

theoatmeal.com/comics/design_hell

You’re not wrong, but a lot of time those webpages aren’t overengineered because the developer wanted it to be, but because the client kept making more and more demands.

RealM__ ,

The irony of some dude trying to prove a point that a website doesn’t need to be bloated and burdened with all the design and fancy scripts, just for other people to incrementally built on top of that idea, one-upping each other in the process, mimicking the exact evolution of the modern bloated website as we know it.

MonkderVierte ,

From one of them:

“You’re a fucking moron if you use default browser styles.”

Or just change your browser settings (they shouldn’t be ugly by default).

frezik ,

You have a problem with Mosaic Gray?

sparkle , (edited )

Honestly I hate the fact that browsers’ default CSS exists. The person doing the frontend should have to specify their “default” CSS before the website even loads. I say this as both a user and a programmer, the same website shouldn’t look different or break on different browsers unintentionally due to the browser’s CSS, and I as a developer shouldn’t have to rely on reset sheets to try to patch that.

Everything would be better if it were swapped around, instead of picking out a reset sheet for a site you pick out a default style…

The world would also be better if browsers rendered pugjs/slim and scss/sass and those were the default rather than html and css but I digress…

0laura ,
@0laura@lemmy.world avatar

true. it kinda sucks seeing people argue against ai when they don’t understand it. like, there’s many things to criticize about ai, I’m not saying they’d like ai if they knew more about it. I just wish their hatred was more educated.

PeriodicallyPedantic ,

Idk, wrt Lora specifically. I agree in general it’d be good if haters of anything were more educated in that thing, but they probably don’t need to be that educated, especially in niche topics.

I’d consider myself an AI hater.
My job is also building ai-assisted tools.
But also I don’t need to understand how the AI works to understand it’s use, beyond a bit of prompt engineering.

Don’t ask about my job satisfaction 😭

I’m talking about LoRA, not LoRa. I’m a fan of both though. I’ve been considering getting a Lilygo T-Echo to run Meshtastic for a while. Maybe build a solar powered RC plane and put a Meshtastic repeater in there, seems like a cool project.

en.wikipedia.org/…/Fine-tuning_(deep_learning)Low-rank adaptation (LoRA) is an adapter-based technique for efficiently fine-tuning models. The basic idea is to design a low-rank matrix that is then added to the original matrix.[13] An adapter, in this context, is a collection of low-rank matrices which, when added to a base model, produces a fine-tuned model. It allows for performance that approaches full-model fine-tuning with less space requirement. A language model with billions of parameters may be LoRA fine-tuned with only several millions of parameters.

TheObviousSolution , to memes in Bacon tho

The trick is not to kill them yourself, but have factories and animal farms do it while deluding yourself into believing that there is a humane way to killing a living being when the reality is there are only less painful ways. Also, from the other side of the aisle, the trick is to delude yourself into thinking that animals would have any problems eating and preying on you. If cattle had no place in human society, their numbers would significantly decrease. What does that say about human societies with large socioeconomic disparity who are treated by cattle by the rich as they get increasingly automated?

There’s no point to this comment, it has been released into the wild so that it may be free.

Angry_Autist ,

wait… are you suggesting everyone just slaughter their own food? Because the specialization of labor and labor of scale was to blame, not the desire to distance oneself from slaughter. That may be the case nowadays but 150 years ago it was nothing for most families to slaughter their own chickens.

*please talk to a dietitian or your doctor, if possible, before drastically changing your diet

I’ve already had to drop dairy out of my diet, so I figure that going vegan isn’t necessarily that much of a stretch anymore. It’s not because of moral or ethical reasons, though: it’s entirely because handling raw meat squicks me out. I currently have to keep up the charade because my family are kind of dicks about it…it sucks.

… I figure that going vegan isn’t necessarily that much of a stretch anymore. It’s not because of moral or ethical reasons

Then it’s not veganism. Veganism is not a diet. It is an ethical position on the treatment of animals. All aspects of our treatment of animals. You cannot be almost vegan or sometimes vegan or partially vegan any more than you can be almost a feminist. Someone who believes women should be allowed to own property, but not his wife, is not almost a feminist.
