That message is spot on. It is one of the dumbest ideas capitalism brings you. Remember in the 50’s they post articles in magazines how the future was going be all relaxation and robots doing all the work.

But between Baby Boomers and conservatives along with the nature of capitalism we get this hellscape instead.

We actually have most states going backwards on child labor laws anything other than raise wages and fix this horrible economy that favors only the super wealthy.

harry_assman , to nostupidquestions in My laptop came with Office pre-installed but I have this banner showing up every time I open it, is there a way to disable it for good?
@harry_assman@lemmy.world avatar

Uninstall it and go for OnlyOffice (interface etc pretty much like MS Office) or if you are a bit more experienced, go for LibreOffice.

Vilian ,

only office it’s the way to go

eric5949 , (edited )

Hasn’t only office had like one update in the last 10 years or something? I stopped recommending that years ago.

Edit: not only office, open office doesn’t get updated. I misread and mistyped.

tonamel ,

Are you thinking of OpenOffice, maybe? OnlyOffice's latest stable release is only three weeks ago, while OpenOffice has only had incremental updates to version 4.1 since 2014.

eric5949 ,

Oh my you are right. This whole time I was thinking it said open and I typed open for some reason. My bad.

harry_assman ,

LibreOffice has a bit of a learning curve, if you come from MS-Office but I think it's very much worth it.

auhu ,
@auhu@kbin.social avatar

A highly underrated feature of LibreOffice Draw is the ability to edit PDFs. Sure it might mess up a font here or there, but there's no way in hell I'm going to pay adobe an absurd amount of money for that one feature.

mvirts ,

Ms office has a bit of a learning curve if you come from libreoffice, especially learning to forget the PowerPoint doesn’t support styles

dan , to ukcasual in Has mince got insanely watery the last few years?

Yeah it’s definitely got worse.

But leave it on medium heat. Eventually the water will boil off, the fat will render and it’ll start to fry, then you’ll be able to brown it. Can take a while.

The sound will change a bit to a crackling/frying sound when it’s got to that point.

It surprises me how poor people’s technology literacy is, when they see an app with a completely skewed logo and think, “It’s probably the real deal.”

There really needs to be some form of education in this area…

Saneless ,

They’ve decided yet another service from Zuck is a good idea. We’re not dealing with geniuses here

mikkL ,

I’m not entirely sure if that’s the case.

Nevertheless, it would be great if people had better tools to assess whether the “trades” they make with tech giants are as innocent as they think. This requires, for example, a better understanding of the data they are giving away. I think the list of permissions shown on the app store for the legitimate app can be quite abstract for many people. Makes it too too easy to overlook the potential consequences and quickly click download - or accept, like many do with cookies.

Blue , to nostupidquestions in Do you think the guys on the titanic submarine will be rescued?

Just imagine, these idiots spend 250k to sit in a iron tube controlled by a cheap offbrand playstation controller but won't spend any of their money to improve the world. Only satisfying their own ego and greed. I can't feel sorry for them, best I can do is hope that they imploded so they didn't have to suffer too long.

Very_Bad_Janet ,

I'm not really in the business of defending billionaires but I think at least one of them, the guy who brought his son, was involved with charities:

"He works with his family's Dawood Foundation, as well as the SETI Institute - a California-based research organisation which searches for extra-terrestrial life.

"Shahzada is also a supporter of two charities founded by King Charles - the British Asian Trust and the Prince's Trust International."

https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-65955554

He sounds (sounded) like a good person.. I do find it interesting that the other billionaires don't have any mentions of charitable works in articles I've read in them.

TechnoBabble ,

Every billionaire uses charities.

They’re a way to exert control over the money that would normally go to taxes, and be up to the government to spend.

It’s not inherently bad, but charity is not quite the saving grace of billionaires that many make it out to be.

The cognitive dissonance displayed here is appalling. So many envious and evil fucks showing zero empathy for other humans dying a terrible death just because they have more money. Jesus fuck, people. If your life view makes you that uncaring of other humans then you need to pick a new life view or start getting on submarines yourself. You sit on the internet gleefully relishing in the deaths of others like that makes you more compassionate of poor people somehow?

Gross. You people are gross.

jkure2 ,

Hundreds of migrants drowned in the Mediterranean like not even more than a few days ago and I’ve seen at least 20x more of this kind of sentiment for a handful of rich dudes that wanted to go visit the titanic in a un-certified pringles can created by a company that recently fired it’s director of marine operations because he wouldn’t sign off on the safety of this thing. Their company website says they are not certified because certification impedes innovation 😵‍💫

Like I saw on Twitter yesterday these dudes are the deadest that anyone has ever been, whether you cry-yell at people on the internet for not being sufficiently crestfallen or not
