ephemerality , to programmer_humor in Good Old Windows

I wrote some open source software and looked into how to make that not happen. It’s not easy on Microsoft, and on Apple it costs more than a $100/year!

Beanie ,

you have to pay to have your stuff put on the app store??

ephemerality ,

Yes, on both platforms.

Mic_Check_One_Two ,

Not only that; You have to pay for updates too. Supposedly it’s because Apple takes time to verify that the app is legit and not going to do nefarious things. So they don’t want a bad actor to get a legit app on the store, then later push an update that infects everyone with a virus.

But apparently a company did a study and realized that app testing rarely made it past the main page, with testers spending ~15-20 seconds per app. They’d basically open it and if it looked like it did what it said, they didn’t bother digging any deeper.

Whirlybird ,

You have to pay for a license to be able to publish apps to the store, yes. This isn’t a bad thing, mainly just for the fact that it stops a lot of trash from being put on there.

SpaceNoodle ,

Why do you think they set those up? To not make money?

nomadjoanne ,

Yes. It’s actually rather tragic I strive to run my business NOT using big tech. But we need an app for our users. On Apple this means you simply MUST pay apple. 100/year is not a lot. I just don’t want to give them my business.

ryannathans ,

Yeah we are an open source org and simply don’t sign the executables because of this bullshit

Iron_Lynx , to technology in Anyone know what this is?

Looks like the physical storage medium of a 3 1/2 inch diskette. Which is usually called a 3 1/2 inch floppy disk, except with this one it’s a bit of a misnomer, since this iteration has a rigid case, unlike the older 8 inch and 5 1/4 inch versions. Or should have, it appears to be removed in OP’s case.

Gobo ,
@Gobo@lemmy.world avatar

The disk itself is flexible, hence the floppy disk. In contrast a hard disk had rigid platters, hence hard. The outer casing has nothing to do with it.

Iron_Lynx ,

You’re technically correct, the best kind of correct. And that said, from a daily-use perspective, the 3½" type has a rigid case, i.e. not floppy. So the storage medium is floppy, while the whole object that the user is expected & supposed to interact with is not. That’s why I find “3½ inch floppy disk” to be a bit of a misnomer.

The 8" and 5¼" types have soft carriers, which is why I have no qualms calling those “floppy disks.”

Tb0n3 ,

The meme seems to imply that Europeans all get 3+ MONTHS off a year. How do businesses operate if they’re always missing a quarter of their staff?

beto ,
@beto@lemmy.studio avatar

You hire more people.

Tb0n3 ,

Sounds like one of those bullshit jobs. The further you get from actually making something the less valuable skilled workers are to production.

hdnsmbt ,

If the same job can be done by more people working fewer hours it’s a “bullshit job”? Elaborate.

Have you heard about shifts? I hear they’re all the rage in production.

Riplikash ,

Productivity and profits have steadily risen for decades while wages have hours worked have increased.

So business obviously were able to survive and thrive with more employees taking a larger slice of the profits. The businesses would be able to operate just fine.

Obi ,
@Obi@sopuli.xyz avatar

The meme is clearly exaggerating for comedic effect. Standard is 4 to 6 weeks PTO across Europe.

andthenthreemore ,
@andthenthreemore@startrek.website avatar

Exactly. And the exaggeration is the same for the American part, I’m sure that even an American would take a whole half day off for kidney surgery.

ludwig ,

Almost everyone has vacation in the summer (winter is cold and shit) so most office work slows down heavily during a few weeks and then picks up again during and after August…

Retail and stuff like that is obviously different.

Tb0n3 ,

Took my 3 weeks in July. It worked out well because our suppliers also slowed down significantly. The huge amounts of vacation the memes and braggarts claim just seemed ridiculous.

ludwig ,

It was exaggerated for comedic effect.

Here we get 25 days (5 work weeks) each year by law. Some get more; I don’t know the average amount of days. Apparently you get 28 days if you don’t get overtime compensation.

In general 4 consecutive weeks are used during the summer months.

You also get paid more during vacation, for some reason.

All other EU countries have a minimum of 20 paid days.

Oneobi ,

I’ve always found the term Paid Time Off as a degenerative term. Like they are doing you some kind of favour.

It’s a holiday, please kill that PTO term.

Strykker ,

The pto thing is because most office/tech jobs let you take unpaid time off too. Just means you won’t make your full salary for the year based on the number of unpaid days you take.

Oneobi ,

The fact that’s also a thing blows my mind.

We don’t have that option here. Between the holidays and things like special leave, I’ve never been not paid for taking time off.

You can take a years unpaid career break which is kinda cool as your job is guaranteed when you return.

Strykker ,

Yeah it’s pretty shit. Since some places they only offer 1 or 2 weeks vacation a year if you want a longer one you end up needing to take the unpaid time off.

Oneobi ,

I don’t even know how anyone copes with that. I get 30 days plus public holidays.

Doing business with Nazis because it’s profitable. Nazis died, BMW regrets.

Doing business with fossil fuel because it’s profitable. Earth dies, BMW regrets.

I see a pattern here

HiddenLayer5 , (edited )

Nah they literally used extermination camp forced labour, that much we know without doubt so they were pretty damn complicit. Tried to research whether BMW ever actually made gas vans, but couldn’t find a definitive confirmation or good evidence to the contrary from a reputable source, so gonna say they might have.

KoboldCoterie , (edited ) to lemmyshitpost in All 50 states with the same naming convention as West Virginia
@KoboldCoterie@pawb.social avatar

Well this is just inaccurate.

North North North North Virginia should be North North North East North North Virginia, and that propagates through The State Formerly Known As New Hampshire and The State Formerly Known As Maine, too.

North North North North Virginia would be Old Canada.

Edit: I guess technically it would be North North East North North North Virginia; the labeling would track backwards from the current state to Virginia. East North Virginia would be 1 state east of “North Virginia”, for example, which would be The State Formerly Known As Delaware.

I’ve spent way too much time thinking about this already.

Rivalarrival ,

Agreed.

They list Ohio as “West North Virginia” when it should either be “North West Virginia” (North of [West Virginia]) or “West North North Virginia” (West of [North North Virginia, AKA, Pennsylvania])

It’s appropriate that they all be slightly wrong, though. Virginia extends slightly west of West Virginia, so West Virginia should really be North Virginia. To use the same naming convention means to carry similar errors.
