Imagine showing up to an HOA meeting with a presentation on why we need to spend ten million dollars on a localizer and glideslope array so Larry wouldn’t have to divert to O’Hare when it’s foggy again.
I can’t imagine this being used for anything other than daylight VFR flying, which doesn’t need radio guidance or even guidance in general beyond the airstrip itself. It’s also possible that there are lights, and they’re just too small to see when not lit.
Naw most VFR unguided airstrips like this don't have anything in the way of landing assistance. The idea being that they'd never fly at night time and divert to a nearby IFR airport if there's sudden weather. Like literal fair weather pilots.
Because this is a small general aviation field. This is for doctors flying their Cirrus SR22 in and out of. You might be surprised how many airfields are probably around you and how many of those are just a strip of grass with some hangers off to the side.
to answer your question, there is no reason other than america’s fetishization of the protestant work ethic.
schools don’t need to be a joyless labor camp. you already have to wake up far too early and be there all day, can’t you at least be on your phone? maybe give kids a break? everyone has stress in their lives, my anxiety started in 5th grade, maybe i don’t have the mental capacity for 7 fucking classes today and i check out after 5. just like no honest person pays full rapt attention every minute of their jobs.
in college you can basically be on your phone during class and i remember just as much from college as i do grade school. either way, you have to study for the exams. if you aren’t gonna pay attention, there are plenty of ways to do so. being forced to listen doesn’t necessarily increase absorption.
Ah yes, americas protestant work ethic is why phones are not allowed in schools. Silly me I thought it was because it lowers motivation and promotes cheating
I thought it was because its distracting to the student and their peers? Cant focus on the lesson when youre playing games on your phone, and converselye when another student is playing games on their phone.
Unless you have ADHD and have a really hard time focusing on work with the chorus of shuffling and sniffles around you and would rather put in earbuds and study.
You must be LARPing. You’re far too much of a caricature to be real. You gonna lecture me about my bootstraps next? Pen an op ed about how “nobody wants to work anymore”?
If kids are already breaking because they don’t have support to hold their hands through 11th grade history class, if it’s too hard to get up and get to school everyday, pay attention, do your homework, etc without special attention from adults …. I mean …. Life is really gonna kick your ass later
Yeah because as we all know, teenagers (14-18 for high school mind you, not sure why you’re specifically saying 11th graders?) are emotionally mature, rational actors who are ready to take on the world with no emotional support or direction.
It’s just hyperbole to illustrate a point. I don’t know why people are so literal online.
I’m not just talking about 11th graders lol
I’m saying that the time to need emotional support from your teachers happens much younger. When you’re 14-18 you’re learning to be an adult. If you don’t learn how to manage yourself emotionally, or provide your own means of motivations, etc you’re not developing into adulthood on a pace that should be expected of you.
If your emotional development is too far delayed, it’s likely to cause you suffering the longer you take to learn it.
I did all this shit, anyway. Twenty years ago. Sacrificed everything on the altar of the almighty A. What did it get me? A master's degree I'm too depressed and anxious to ever use and a long-standing hatred of the system. Now I speak out because nobody listens to the people who are still in the system. The people directly affected by it are easy to ignore. Now I'm the demographic people listen to whether they should or not, so I'm saying what I wish people had said when it was me.
“Oh no, the teacher isn’t in tune with my emotions, I’m so hard done by, how can I be expected to excel if everything and everyone doesn’t revolve around me? Wahhhh”
GTFO, and yes be strong, don’t be weak. The world is a dangerous fucking place.
I don’t know about you, but my school did the best it could. Some adults might even say what you said about society in general - infinite resources to harm and burden, etc. People usually try their best, your teachers too. Maybe you’ll grow up to be a teacher and you’ll be better at it than the ones you had. Good luck!
I grew up and became a librarian instead, because I genuinely enjoy helping people find the things they are interested in, but couldn't lend my energy to a system that doesn't care about the that they are interested in part, among other flaws.
If you believe there is anything you can do about this. Then you are naive. There are almost eight billion of us. We have an immense industry. People not worrying about things like that is normal. Because they are to busy feeding there children. Trying to live a little. Also why do people think that you can stop climate change. The dice has been rolled. Alea iacta est.
Dude. The world is being killed and the people killing it have names and addresses. This is not a untouchable force of nature causing our homes to flood and burn while the ecosystems that allow us to farm collapse.
You have agency. Get angry, channel it and get active.
Yes but also wise up - we’re not the same as Exxon Mobil or Rio Tinto. We individually need to make our changes, absolutely - but they won’t unless we force them to do so and they dwarf us in output to an inhuman degree.
Simply - we need to stop their machines in a very literal sense. They’ve already shown that dialogue and scientific reasoning is an utterly useless vehicle for change in the face of their organisations - so we need to start speaking in languages they understand. Remove their ability to function. Direct action is the answer to the question.
It has become fashionable for some to take a defeatist condescending stance like this when it comes to issues that affect everyone. If you think it makes you look smart, it doesn’t. These are pressing issues and people have to take action. If you don’t want to, go ahead and disappear. But don’t talk down to those who are and those who are calling for it.
