My wife, a couple friends, and I have all put a ton of hours into this game and absolutely love it. I put several hours into the shipbuilder alone. Every hand built sidequest I run into feels like a TNG episode. And I love the kinda Becky Chambers / Star Trek-style utopia with mystery and drama theme they’ve got.

This is the most Bethesda game they’ve ever made, for better of worse. It doesn’t hand hold you. There are plenty of times where I’ve looked at my quest log, found nothing i could do except the main quest, and then decided just to jump to a random system - only to get pulled into some crazy new adventure for a couple hours. You’re supposed to be an explorer, if you put even the smallest effort into exploring, you will be rewarded.

A lot of people complaining were never going to like this game or any Bethesda game and I don’t know what to do with those people. The amount of constant negativity on the internet makes me really appreciate stories like TNG and writers like Becky Chambers and Cory Doctorow, because they’re so positive and affirming and optimistic and when they criticise, they also offer solutions. And this game really scratches that itch for me.

And after almost 40 years of life dealing with the constsnt cycle of negativity and hatred and anger and frustration and drama, on the internet, a global scale, and in my own life…I’m just tired. I can’t play games with “edgy dark stories” anymore. I can’t go back to New Vegas because its bummer after bummer. And i know a lot of people thrive on that “scortched earth” bullshit but I just can’t anymore.

I just…wanna sit down and play a game. And maybe one where everything is okay for once. And this is that game for me.

CapitanStrider ,

Yeah that’s fair. Even if you see negative stuff about a game online, if you enjoy something then just enjoy it. Online toxicity and negativity are out of your control. Just get comfy and find peace in knowing that you’re having a good time.

guriinii ,

I don’t get the hate, fuck 'em. I’m absolutely loving the game, it’s exactly what I wanted and more. In fact, I get the same feeling I did playing Skyrim, you’re doing some side mission, then you see something absolutely stunning. Earlier I was on some grey barren moon looking for resources, I look to the right, see the red planet, it’s ice caps, and other two moons with the milky way behind them.

I like the TNG comparison. The side missions are so much better than in other Bethesda games I’ve played. Even little interactions with the NPCs or little events and conversations that just happen as a part of the world and not some quest. Love it.

thecodemonk ,

Damn it. Now I might have to try to buy it. In was thinking game pass as I would probably just do the main story and be done… But if the side quests aren’t just some, go pick up this item and bring it back, id love that.

guriinii ,

I mean there is that too but it’s how the story is told. Maybe the voice acting and characters are better also.

updawg ,

Head to Paradiso for a StarTreky adventure.

SwampYankee ,

Man that last quest for Sarah was a such a TNG moment. Overall the writing in this game is a cut above most - that quest was sort of an obvious twist, but it was executed really well. I find myself wishing the animations could keep up with the writing and voice actors sometimes, but we can’t have it all.

sentient_loom ,
@sentient_loom@sh.itjust.works avatar

Are you hoping for cut scenes with specially rendered segments? Because I hate that stuff and would rather see animations built within the game world, like we have in most of these Bethesda games.

Cut scenes ruin games for me. It’s why I never finished a Mass Effect game.

SwampYankee ,

No, just more emotion in the animations. You know how real people will sort of look up & to the left or something, maybe put their finger or hand up if they’re trying to remember something? Or they’ll look around and move their head a little, scratch their chin, etc. if they’re thinking. Or they’ll scrunch their eyebrows up and look at the ground if they’re sad?

That kind of thing.

sentient_loom ,
@sentient_loom@sh.itjust.works avatar

It isn’t really cursive Cyrillic so much as just italic Cyrillic. I struggled with reading italics for a good while too, but eventually you get the hang of it.

Edit: Oh and the heads on the left are labeled “monarchist”, “cadet”, “eser”, and “menshevik”.

original_ish_name ,

Ahhh, yes the mensheviks. The majority which name was the russian word for minority

janAkali ,

At the moment of separation of RSDRP mensheviks were in fact a minority of the party. And intersting enough, it’s not the given name, that’s what they named their faction after bolsheviks came up with their name.

PolandIsAStateOfMind , (edited )
@PolandIsAStateOfMind@lemmy.ml avatar

They were minority nearly all time among the workers and party supporters in Russia. Mensheviks did attained majority in party congresses several times, but it’s because they were usually happening outside Russia and mensheviks certainly had majority among the emmigrant inteligentsia. For example once they got a majority for few years because most bolshevik memebers of Central Comitte were arrested in Russia - something that was not happening to the mensheviks since they weren’t in Russia.

They also didn’t had the majority during the October Revolution. They did, but only together with SR’s, during the February Revolution, but in subsequent months they squandered it by not fullfilling even the most basic promises of that revolution.

I was just thinking about this the other day…like games are optized for windows usually, but windows is not optimized for games. A fresh Windows 10 runs at 2gb ram on idle. It all went down hill for gamers when Microsoft killed xp

c0mbatbag3l ,
@c0mbatbag3l@lemmy.world avatar

RAM is the cheapest upgrade possible, unless you’re trying to run a game on 8GB in 2023 idk why you’d be that concerned with RAM usage.

ChiefSinner ,

c0mbatbag3l ,
@c0mbatbag3l@lemmy.world avatar

Then you’ll turn around and tell me to use Firefox even though Vivaldi runs on half the RAM.

Your guaranteed response?

“Well you have it, might as well use it!”

Cool, exactly how I feel about the OS. Who cares if it can’t run on less than a GB. I gave 32GB and can’t use all of it if I wanted to even with all my monitors full of applications. Don’t see a difference in the argument.

Estebiu ,
@Estebiu@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

“Why would you want to run your entire DE in under 500mb ram?”

“Cuz it’s cool”

My arch install runs at 700mb without nothing opened. Yeah, I know I always have Thunderbird/firefox/telegram/mpv opened and my usage skyrockets to 10/11gb on medium, but knowing that my DE only occupies a very small portion of that is pleasant.

c0mbatbag3l ,
@c0mbatbag3l@lemmy.world avatar

Sure, if minimizing the amount of hardware your OS runs on is fun for you go ahead. I’m not trying to tell you it’s wrong, I think it’s badass.

It just isn’t a factor in being “optimized for gaming” when the average system has 8-16GB to spare even under gaming load. That’s like saying your car isn’t “optimized for driving” based purely on MPG and eschewing all other metrics.

c0mbatbag3l ,
@c0mbatbag3l@lemmy.world avatar

Good? Okay? We need more minimalism

c0mbatbag3l ,
@c0mbatbag3l@lemmy.world avatar

That’s an opinion, your OS can have whatever you want with however much bloat you want your hardware to have to handle.

abbotsbury ,
@abbotsbury@lemmy.world avatar

your OS can have whatever you want with however much bloat you want

No, it can’t, because you can’t remove the bloat, dummy, that’s the entire point of the problem. People wouldn’t care if they could just remove the bullshit.

c0mbatbag3l ,
@c0mbatbag3l@lemmy.world avatar

You want a Linux install to take up less RAM? Install a lightweight distro like Endeavor or regular Arch and go with an absolutely minimal build.

You want that with Windows? There are ISO’s that have Cortana and other preinstalled bloatware already removed, etc. Or you can do the same with PowerShell post-install.

The more I hear Linux purists talk the more it’s clear their knowledge of windows is either incredibly basic with no attempt to actually learn or fifteen years out of date. Usually both.

BaconIsAVeg ,

Really? My arch install is idling at 2.8gb. Picom (310mb), XOrg (160mb) and pipewire (140mb) are big chunks, and kitty isn’t cheap either but the rest is mainly sub 50mb services that all add up. I’m not running anything heavy like Gnome or KDE either, just bspwm and 2 polybar instances (one for each monitor).

abbotsbury ,
@abbotsbury@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah that sounds fishy, a default KDE installation of Fedora would at least be under a gig for me

_cnt0 ,
@_cnt0@lemmy.villa-straylight.social avatar

Depends on settings and the amount of availlable RAM. Install fedora KDE spin on three systems, one with 4GB, one with 8 and one with say 16GBs of RAM. You should see, that the vanilla install of KDE uses different amounts of RAM on each system. KDE uses caching of all kinds of stuff to make the overall experience smoother. The amount and aggressivenes of the caching depends on distribution defaults. And KDE using, say, 8GB of RAM when idling isn’t bad. RAM is only useful, when it is used. When memory pressure increases (applications are actively using lots of RAM), KDE will automatically reduce cache sizes to free the RAM up again.

The entire notion of the system using as little RAM as possible is really weird and usually (imho) shows that people who say that don’t understand how the RAM is used. I want my system to make good use of my RAM, and as much of that as is reasonable.

c0mbatbag3l ,
@c0mbatbag3l@lemmy.world avatar

Damn, you said it better than I could have. Unused RAM is like unused screen space.

Bragging you have three monitors but have mastered Alt-Tab and don’t use them.

c0mbatbag3l ,
@c0mbatbag3l@lemmy.world avatar

My fedora install idles at about 1.5GB.

theshatterstone54 ,

How heavy is your kitty? It usually averages at 40-45 Mb on a new window for me (with custom zsh with starship and some plugins, and customised neofetch)

BaconIsAVeg ,

https://lemmy.ml/pictrs/image/845b04fd-60af-46e2-a337-7dccc637ea6c.png

Yeah that’s weird, after a systemctl soft-reboot, both picom and xorg’s memory usage is way down. Either way, it’s still not that unreasonable to see Windows idling at 2GB.

vacuumflower ,

Trying on 6GB. As a Linux user I usually don’t need more RAM, so haven’t added any yet.

mvirts ,

Meh swap is pretty crazy, I am squeezing modded Minecraft in 4gb ram on win10, it takes about 10 minutes to load, but by the time the first few chunks are rendered I think most pages are swapped to disk, letting java take almost the full 4 gigs. Don’t ask why I’m doing this, exactly 😅
