scorpiosrevenge , to linux in Why does Nvidia hate linux?

Switched to high powered AMD GPUs years ago… No regrets. Awesome graphics, better support, and a better price point usually.

Aiyub ,

But not the fancy machine learning acceleration

Lemminary ,

I did have many regrets. Mainly overheating and the card eventually failing on me. Funny how these large companies ship their shit to “third world countries” so that people have a lower chance of returning their POS

DarkwinDuck , to linux in What are the main challenges in Linux adoption for New users, and how can it be addressed?

To be honest, one part is what everyone mentioned here. Not being preinstalled and all that.

The other part is that unfortunately at least according to my own expirence as a Linux noob a few years ago some Linux communities can be very toxic. If you’re asking questions of how to do X and someone comes along and is all “why do you even want to do X if you could also do Y? Which is something entirely different but also does something vaguely similar”

That’s one if the things.

And then other curiosities. I cannot for example for the life of me get my main monitor to work under Linux with any new Kernel version. My Laptop just refuses to output to it or the second monitor attached via Display port daisychaining. On the older version it works, on the newer it’s broken. I have tried troubleshooting this problem for over half a year and it’s still broken. And that’s out of the Box on Ubuntu LTS…

So i don’t really understand this question. There are major roadblocks. With Wayland which is default for Ubuntu now those roadblock jist became bigger. Screensharing in multiple Apps including slack is outright broken unless you use the shitty webapp. The main player Office 365 largely doesn’t work at all on Linux. All these things that should work for a Desktop operating System don’t work out of the Box as they should.

That’s why people aren’t using it and companies aren’t preinstalling it.

I, too, would like the winter winds to teach me about Rust.

AnalogyAddict , to programmerhumor in Alphabetically sorted months. But WHY?

Speaking as a UX designer, probably because some "product manager" decided it was too expensive to override the auto- sort that was applied before the designer was brought in to "pretty things up."

There is no tone of bitterness in my comment, honestly there isn't.

Blamemeta ,

Im sorry. Im a front end dev, i wish i could make everything pretty, but theres just too many meetings and too much process for everything to get much done.

AnalogyAddict ,

Haha! Exactly! I do some coding, too, but I can't think like a UXer and a dev at the same time.

It's the "making it pretty" part that makes me bitter. That is the LEAST part of what we do.

It's like asking an architect to come in and fix the building after it's already mostly built. Bad PMs insist on seeing us like interior decorators, but we are primarily architects.

Lifter ,

They don’t want to pay architect salary to do decorating work and I fully agree. Problem is that stuff like this are often overlooked until someone makes a fuss about it, costing PR. The other 90 % of the overlooked stuff is never found though so it’s still a good decision to skip stuff like this.

AnalogyAddict ,

I'd believe that, if they weren't already paying the architect salary to have us do interior design. They hire us, then shackle us.

VirtualAlias ,

Yeah, I was going to say they just left a default alphabetical sort to their global droplist component and called it a day. Probably works fine in most contexts, but this one - not so much.

Ok, to be specific:

  • You really SHOULD have it
  • It is a proof of vaccination
  • Some countries require you to have your cat vaccinated against rabies (such as Germany)
  • If you don’t have such proof, in Germany, they may take your cat away from you for a few days and put him into quarantine

    The US is included in my list too with the Native American genocide for what its worth lol. But people tend to forget that Soviet Russia and Communist China killed millions of their own people. They should not be praised or imitated. We should learn from the horrible mistakes of the past.

    davel , (edited )
    @davel@lemmy.ml avatar

    By millions murdered, you don’t mean people who died in the last famine in China after centuries of famines, and you don’t mean the last famine in the region that became the USSR after centuries of famines, right? Famines that happened during or soon after the bloody revolutions overthrowing the tsars and emperors, under which the previous famines occurred?

    ChiefSinner ,

    I mean in the boxer revolution and the millions that died in gulags in USSR because of famine and the government selecting people at random to starve to death in labor camps.

    davel , (edited )
    @davel@lemmy.ml avatar

    The boxer rebellion was 50 years before the Chinese Communist Revolution. The CIA’s own unclassified reports show what people in gulags were fed. Why would they choose people at random? That would be dumb. Nazis, kulaks, other prisoners of the revolutionary war, and common criminals were in gulags.

    ChiefSinner ,

    Bruh, they literally picked people from bread lines and threw them into the gulag. Not to mention the majority of clergy for just being christian clergy.

    Bruh, they literally picked people from bread lines and threw them into the gulag.

    [citation needed]
    Do you even think critically about the cold war propaganda we were fed? Why would you pick people out of bread lines and put them into gulags to feed them there? That would mean you’d have to build more gulags and get people to staff them. Why would you do that unless you’re a cartoon villain? It makes no sense.

    Not to mention the majority of clergy for just being christian clergy.

    I have no great love for clergy, especially when they side with tsars against a worker revolution.

    emidio ,

    Lemme just unload very blurry memories of junior high school class and add numbers with “millions”, that sounds like enough work to not give 1 minute of my time to actually know anything about the USSR or China

    ChiefSinner ,

    Why don’t you read up on the USSR and read peoples actual experiences with it. Yeah there weren’t millions in the boxer revolution, but tbh the forced abortion 2 kid thing probably puts them into millions category

    The best NC setup, is uninstalling NC. Seriously, I spent a month getting that monstrosity to work and not bitch about configurations OUT OF THE BOX that it does NOT HAVE A UI FOR just to find out that half of the ‘apps’ are half-baked buggy messes and the other are out of date, half-baked buggy messes. A to-do system without repeating item availability was the last one I learned about before salting the earth of that hopeless project.

    Right now I’m using a synology nas and its 1st party programs, but trying to break away to a more foss-friendly environment. Drive, Contacts, Calendar/Tasks, just work and don’t require any fiddling so until a worthy opponent shows up, I’m kinda stuck.

    Zelaf ,

    I’m there too right now. Got a DS720+ but it’s struggling a little since I’m also self hosting mail through it. I’ve been eyeing to use NC as a replacement for everything but do get mixed feelings from threads like these lol

    I hope to in the future get a proper little mini PC with a disk enclosure in the future to have as a replacement for that however!

    bookworm ,

    @wreckedcarzz @Zelaf got ?

    wreckedcarzz ,
    @wreckedcarzz@lemmy.world avatar

    I’ve looked briefly into seafile; I’m fine, happy really, with the synology for file hosting, it’s just the caldav, the photo management (I have immich but there’s no easy way to move albums from syno to imm), stuff like that. And the fact that it all works together (reverse proxy, apps, web UI…) makes it illogical to move away for anything else than ‘principle’ or ‘insufficient hardware’.

    I have truenas running on a proxmox system but it appears it wants more than one drive? But I don’t have matching drives for raid at the moment. That was/is something I’m looking into longer term, once I decouple the data from the services.
