It breaks. And I cant imagine anyone who wants to spend time fixing it, much less how long it would take tech illiterate people. Cant explain how many times ive gotten some random error downloding a package, and even ill have a hard time finding what tf the cryptic error message means

Do you think just restarting with no information would be better? I could understand that cryptic error Message could scare some people, so do you think a “blue screen” and restart would be better for the average person?
If the device can self repair behind the scenes, 100% most users couldnt care less about an error message or having to reboot, as long as not too often and requiring too much input. I can see why linux is excellent for servers requiring little to no downtime though
I remember recently there was something where a fairly low level system dependency was having trouble installing during a system upgrade, but only until partway through the install. It caused chaos on my system that took a good week to resolve. I can’t imagine that 99% of people have the skill or patience to go through that process.
That said, that particular problem may be solved by the new generation of distros that allow for rollback of system changes.
Linux is the coolest fucking OS, hands down… If you’re a computer nerd. Otherwise it’s inconvenient at the best of times. Many users click around in their OS of choice without fully understanding what they’re doing, myself included. Try this in Linux and you’re in for a really bad time.
To what extent could companies wreck my freedom in cars even more? I have heard of heated seats being pay walled, despite the technology to heat the seat being installed in the factory… Computer controlled locking systems where if my key fob breaks I can’t get into my car, or worse, the electronic control system fails and I’m up shit creek without a paddle.
As to education, how can I even learn to repair something like that? My ignorance makes me think soldering may be useful, but how can an individual have greater control on the freedom to repair and own their automobile. The generality of my question lays in my ignorance to the inner workings of most cars.
You have to buy special $3000 computer handhelds that plug into the car and let you interface with it completely. Often you can only buy those with a business account direct from the manufacturer.
You cand do a little bit with OBD II using a $10 Bluetooth dongle and free app. But that’s basically limited to reading and clearing codes.
I got an OBD-II device for reading and clearing codes and at least I can snatch them from my vehicle. I haven’t heard of the dongle before, does it connect to the infotainment system and then allow you access to the underlying file system? I don’t want to brick anything doing that lol

It was like this in my CS department a decade ago, too. There was me, one other gal, and for a while a German exchange student who wanted nothing to do with either of us in the entire grad program. I learned to talk a lot louder over the course of that program.

Indeed, and it runs great on this old machine. I recently made the switch to Wayland from X11 wms like spectrwm and herbstluftwm. The difference is like that old movie, “The Wizard of OZ”, where everything goes from being in B&W, to suddenly technocolor. ;-P
Easier than I thought it was going to be, but I had a ton of experience with various window managers under Xorg. The difference comes in swapping out certain tools for their wayland counterparts. Example using wofi or fuzzel, instead of rofi, imv, instead of feh, grim, instead of scrot, swaybg or hyprpaper, instead of nitrogen, mako, instead of dunst. The alternatives are there, you just have to make the necessary small adjustments.
If you want to try Hyprland check out this guy’s video and config files. You can get a working and usable setup very easily.
I come from a Windows and Mac environment and I now happily use Linux Mint. It has a similar aesthetic and is really easy to use. I think not recommending newbies Arch would be a good start.
I agree. Zorin OS is another good option, if people accept the fact that new users don’t care about snaps vs flatpaks. And Zorin OS Pro helps the distro maintainers put food on the table. BTW, its been too long of a wait for Zorin Grid
It’s still software support. Yes, there are many great alternatives, but not being able to use apps like everyone and not being aplble to keep the apps you have is just too complicated for many
