This is the same grouping fallacy as the vaccine arguments. A lot of these people have trouble understanding nuance. The vaccine can be harmful to some and beneficial to others, it’s on a scale and it’s impossible to know who falls where on the scale. That doesn’t mean overall it’s a bad thing to do.
For op’s example there are some leftists who are lazy and weak, there are also some who are ruthless and there are some that are ruling class elites. The problem is when their groups are applied to the whole to suit whatever narrative they want it becomes nonsensical and dangerous.
See here for the new permissions the Simple mobile tools apps require after it was sold to an ad-company. I think that speaks for itself: programming.dev/post/8634202
OP searched for Fossify - the Simple fork. That’s the point here - the new owner of Simple has added the keyword ‘fossify’ so they turn up in the search results, which no doubt prioritises apps with higher install counts.
All major distributions offer all major Environments. I currently use either Debian or Ubuntu and usually install by booting the Netinstall.iso right from the official Servers which installs just the base system without any GUI at all. Then I use tasksel to select the environment. Ok, not every Environment is part of Tasksel but often it is just adding another Repository and running another apt install operation.
And yes, on my experimental computer I often install a dozen environments just because I can. Selectable at Login-Screen.
But now somethings VERY important from someone with 35 years of POSIX experience:
If you are a newby FOR GODS SAKE USE UBUNTU.
And if you are a pro… Ubuntu still is a very good option. Only if your have VERY GOOD REASONS which you COMPLETELY UNDERSTAND, only then use something else. Which is Debian for me.
Until you use software that without up front notice Ubuntu decides to move from APT to Snap without a migration process in place for your settings or credentials. Like has happened with Telegram and with Chromium. And then stuff breaks in ways where you as a noobie would have no idea how to fix.
This is exactly what happened with the Ubuntu setup on my parents' laptop and I've since moved everything over to Linux Mint for them so they don't have to deal with that anymore.
I actually had more issues with Ubuntu than popos. And the one audio issue I had, the system76 guys were fantastic.
Ubuntu is filled with bloat these days, and your actually better off with straight Debian than Ubuntu. Not to mention as a whole Ubuntu has made some ‘questionable’ decisions in recent times
Yes but the reason I purchased from play store (which has the side effect of donating an undeserved 30% to google) was that I could easily share the access with the family without too much effort, just send a link to them 😢
I believe, Fossify Gallery has practically the same features as Simple Gallery Pro. So, your family does still get full access with just the F-Droid link…
Simple Mobile Tools got sold and probably will go the web extension way of scammers loading it up with malware to extract private info and sell it. Delete it now.
That’s so annoying - I have a ton of their apps too!
Looks like I’ll be staying on these ancient F-Droid versions for a while until a replacement shows up… but ugh I am so annoyed. Files, Draw, and the gallery in particular that allowed you to resize (strips EXIF data), crop and do all sorts was so handy
Note: I use droid-ify, another client for Fdroid, but personally prefer this one as I can easily add other necessary repositories that add even more apps to the store front. Droid-ify
It was bought out by ZippoApps, which is notorious for buying popular apps, loading them with adware/spyware, then abandoning them once all the users eventually flee.
Go look at the added permissions that the new versions require. You’re basically handing them an image of your entire phone.
Someone made an app that was genuinely very good. Then a company wanted to buy the app. The developer sold the app. The company loaded it with whatever spyware they wanted and pushed it in an update.
Now the app is garbage. Sadly it happens all the time. It happened to me right after I bought a year subscription to private internet access.
But to be clear this can happen on any platform or App Store official or not.
Btw since its sold you probably won’t recieve foss updates(they will be proprietary). So there is this fork called Fossify. And you could export all data in your apps as backups and restore it to fossify
