atmur , to linux_gaming in Linux Desktop Share keeps increasing, 3.13% now. Narrowing the gap to ChromeOs 3.24%

This makes me really happy to see. Desktop Linux is fucking amazing nowadays. Gnome and KDE being as excellent as they are, Flatpak massively simplifying package management for end users, and Pipewire being Pipewire have all gone a long way in making desktop Linux more easily approachable and incredibly stable. If I’m allowed to be controversial, I’d include Wayland in that list as well.

I fucking love the open source community.

    People meme on electron, and I think most of it is deserved, but it does make a lot of stuff way easier for devs, and that means more software for users. There’s a reason it’s so popular.

    Ok, someone please explain to me why default wallpapers are a story in any way?? And everytime a new version of a desktop comes out, I’m baffled to see that theres an actual discussion and debate about…default wallpapers??? Like in the same sense that people talk about ACTUAL desktop features…

    You guys don’t change your wallpaper??.. Who in the flying fuck cares about the goddamn default wallpaper?!?!?!?

    I actually don’t change mine if the default is nice. Or I keep it for a while till I replace it. Still baffles me that people think they warrant much discussion unless Gnome decides to ship a wallpaper with literal gnomes fucking or something.

    A clean wallpaper is the first onboarding experience for a user. Some distros have horrible wallpapers. other than that wallpaper doesn’t matter. personally I did a lot of late night computer work so wanted a redish background. I found this image, did a deep search but coyld not find original artist/photographer.

    flashgnash ,

    Can confirm, I never thought I cared about wallpaper or that it made much difference but it turns out it was a big part of why I like elementOS/pantheon so much and after switching gnome’s wallpaper to a similar one I realised I liked it more

    Sounds dumb but it really has a subconscious effect on how much you like the DE as a whole

    BCsven ,

    Totally. We are driven to look for beauty, form, symmetry in nature, and assymetry for interest. IMO a bad wallpaper could turnoff a potential new user if it has that janky feel. Zorin and Elementary seem very polished because they took the time to start with clean wallpaper and polish the UI. And I realize Ubuntu is a good distro but can you imagine recommending it to a C level exec and their first look is a faceted pather looking thing that seems like 90s tron vector graphics. Similarily Pop!_OS is great but some dude is going to see a minimal colour posterized robot scene and think is this on OS for kids? Don’t get me wrong I love posterized art, but not everyone does.

    angrymouse ,

    Im using endevourOS for about 6 months, before i used manjaro for 12 months, all without changing the default wallpaper

    conorab ,

    For me, the default wallpaper throws me back to the period it was made and reminds me of what it was like to use that version. This GNOME one feels a little generic and I swear I’ve seen it before. Feels like the right style to use in a dynamic wallpaper where colours randomly shift.

    Aman9das ,
    @Aman9das@rammy.site avatar

    This one denotes Forest Fires

    Why are people acting like any animal based character is a furry? Did everyone forget about Looney Tunes, Tom and Jerry, Cats Don’t Dance, Aristocats, Mickey Mouse, American Tale, The Secret of NIMH, Adventures from the Book of Virtues, All Dogs Go To Heaven, Oliver and Company, Lion King, Bambi, Chester Cheetah, The Great Mouse Detective, the Trix Rabbit, basically anything made for kids, old fables and folktales, etc feel free to add to the list

    None of this is new and it reminds me when people were losing their minds over actors playing different characters like it was a new thing

    altima_neo ,
    @altima_neo@lemmy.zip avatar

    Looney Tunes and Time and Jerry didn’t wear clothes, or pretend they were people.

    The Looney tunes characters were all animals in animal settings, personified for comedic effect.

    Then you’ve got all that Don Bluth stuff that is definitely furry, which kicked of a lot of furry imaginations.

    Also pretty sure Disney is responsible for a lot of furries. Gadget alone fucked up a lot of kids.

    daveyeah ,

    I’ve never met anyone who hasn’t watched cartoons where animals pretend to be people before, what a day.

    Why are people acting like any animal based character is a furry?

    Furries are anthropomorphic animals, i.e. non-human animals with human characteristics. Which describes everything you just listed.

    GlitchyDigiBun ,
    @GlitchyDigiBun@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

    Furries are a community off-shoot of the broader sci-fi fandom that started in the 1970’s, characterized by a fondness for anthropomorphic reprisentation in media. It expanded from it’s sci fi roots into fantasy, alt-historical fiction, slice of life, and yes, porn, because nerds are horny.

    Furries is also the term for the characters that are created by the members of the community, and also has been used to describe other characters in other media, but it’s worth noting that not all of these come from furries (the people), though by now nearly all do. The lead character artists for Zootopia and Sing are out furries, for example. And Vivziepop and the Lackadaisy team certainly are furries.

    Absolutely unethical and it could never happen as an experiment, but I wish I could see the results somehow.
