Alice , to asklemmy in What's the hardest you've ever hit your head on something or something hit yours?

Not the most dramatic, but when I was really little I remember play fighting with my brothers, and falling backwards off the bed and hitting my head against a dresser.

There was no wound or anything but I remember seeing all kinds of fucked up colors at the moment of impact. Despite being a huge crybaby, I’m pretty sure I didn’t cry or freak out, I was just extremely fatigued.

I wonder if we should have gone to the doctor. I don’t think you’re supposed to see TV static and rainbow vomit when you bump your head.

Like email mailing lists? A newsletter or something? MailChimp might work for you

Exactly, yes. That’sa second recommendation for Mailchimp so that’s what I’ll do.

AceFuzzLord , to linuxmemes in Wine acronym

My personal favorite acronym like that definitely goes to AROS (Amiga Research Operating System) that if I remember correctly had to - for legal reasons - change the name. Rather than come up with a completely new name, went with AROS Research Operating System.

Edit: name change was apparently to avoid any trademark issues with the Amiga name.

Acorn/ARM apparently did much the same thing.

z3rOR0ne , to asklemmy in How do you get over a crush?

Let yourself feel whatever you feel and observe it. Think about how you would react if you saw a close friend or family member going through that. Most kind people would say something comforting or express some form of compassion.

The most important thing to remember is that there will be lots of good and bad things that happen in life, and holding on/ruminating over the past and obsessing over/fearing the future are probably best avoided.

A little reflection and self compassion is good and healthy, but long term rumination and self loathing is when things can get unhealthy quick. Discerning when one turns into the other is difficult, but do your best and try to be self aware of how you’re feeling as you navigate these truly difficult emotions.

Know that this experience, the emotions and the thoughts caught up in it, are part of what makes you human, and that ultimately, it’s one of many experiences that will add up to who you are and who you’ll eventually become. In every moment, you are, whether consciously or subconsciously, engaging with the world and the circumstances you find yourself in, and becoming who you want/need to be.

Be aware of that, and control what you are capable of controlling about who you want to become. It’s like navigating a river, you’re not completely in control nor out of control. Ultimately all you can do is try your best to get to where you want to go, knowing it won’t be perfect nor will it go exactly to plan, but nevertheless you carry on.

Vacuum Wars! He tests, reviews, and compares vacuum cleaners. And he’s very thorough and scientific. His standard, but not only test is to measure sand by mass, put it in a carpet, run the vacuum in question over it, and weigh the remainder. That gives him a benchmark for all of the. He also does electric mops, carpet cleaners, air filters, robotic vacuums etc. If you are ever in the market for a new vacuum cleaner, check it out!

my favorite fact about Wine is that they could’ve named it Pine, Dine, Fine, Line, etc

It’s a cheeky play on “WINdows Emulator” as well as “WINE’s Is Not an Emulator”, but I think for both legal (trademark) and logistical (it really isn’t an emulator) reasons, you’ll never officially see that bit sanctioned

It’s not an emulator though. That’s literally what the name is explaining!

Pine was already taken by an email reader. One of the early ascii email readers was called elm, for ELectronic Mail. Pine was made after elm and it stands for Pine Is Not Elm.

I’m starting to get the impression that most software older than me is defined more by what it isn’t than by what it is.

akash_rawal , to selfhosted in Confused about Podman

For me the value of podman is how easily it works without root. Just install and run, no need for sudo or adding myself to docker group.

I use it for testing and dev work, not for running any services.

Sequentialsilence , to asklemmy in What's the hardest you've ever hit your head on something or something hit yours?

I was still growing and wasn’t aware of how tall I had gotten and jumped over a box in a doorway, I hit my head on the doorframe, woke up on the ground with a busted doorframe.

WHARRGARBL , (edited ) to asklemmy in How do you feel you've aged?

I’m the poster child for The Road Not Taken. It’s been a weird and wild ride.

The same since single-digit age:

  • Still strongly align with the Party of the European Left (I’m from USA)
  • Still a devout zoophilist
  • Still prefer vegan food

Different at 62:

  • Less physical strength & flexibility
  • Switched from theist to atheist
  • Learning to enjoy my irrelevance

ETA: zoophilist

A zoophilist is generally defined as someone who has a deep love or affinity for animals, often expressing a strong emotional connection to them and advocating for their rights, welfare, and protection.

Nothing sexual there, people. I abhor animal abuse, but I’m blown away by how restrained your responses were in an effort to be inclusive. Also, I don’t have a penis.

cashmaggot OP ,

You sound like an absolute blast, and I dig it. 10/10!

Sounds like you're doing life right, whatever roads you took to get to where you're at =)

CyberMonkey404 ,

Still a devout zoophilist

Sorry, a what now?

cashmaggot OP ,

Wait, hot damn I read that as like someoen who loves animals. Eh, life! Okay. Well, it takes all kinds. Not in love with that. Cause you know, consent. But I can't say a damn thing about it. Because to be honest, I knew someone else who was of that life many moons ago. They told me cause I've just got one of those faces people be telling shit to. Felt the same way when they told me. Not about that life. Not exactly happy about it. Not really sure where to sit there. But I don't really have any say in it in this department.

(I def legit thought it was like being a vegan =P!)

And before people come knocking on my door I don't have contact with this person. I had no actual knowledge of anything they did. I don't even know if they did anything. Because as far as I knew, they were a virgin (which they said). And all things aside, it might have just been furry stuff. But I don't know because I literally DO NOT KNOW!!! So no, I didn't report animal abuse or anything, because I literally had nothing to do with it other than just like...hearing it like someone telling me they like eating farts or something and then it was gone.

CyberMonkey404 ,

Don’t fret, just wanted to check I understood right, is all

WHARRGARBL ,

Your initial reaction was correct; I’m viscerally opposed to using animals for sex.

There is a world of difference between a zoophilist and a zoophile, but i understand how easy it is to confuse the words.

cashmaggot OP ,

Ah, jesus - thank god! Cause I loved the vibe on you. You seemed like a real firecracker. But god I gotta say, not into animal cruelty! Phew! Yeah, animal rights, all the way! Hahahaha! Ah, jeez! Yeah. Sorry about that, saw the person's thing and since I grew up with the lowest bar of education I thought I had something wrong there. PHEW! Thank you.

Also, I donno if I thought you might have had a penis, but the person who told me that jim-jam also didn't have a penis. But all things aside, I hopped into your profile - saw you had a husband and figured - it takes all kinds(?) and that you might be a woman (statistically speaking) but also you know...life? But also a vagina holder, hey-yo!

loam , to linux_gaming in Counter strike 2 issues

I’ve had issues on stock x11 PopOS using nvidia. Decent fps, but bigger drops and frametime consistency seemed horrible. I have to turn off my (mismatched) 2nd monitor for my proper refresh rate to work, but it still looked very microstuttery. I miss VRR, but I think there’s a bigger underlying issue than vsync/VRR not working. Haven’t tried Wayland yet.

A good hobby does wonders to keep you distracted enough to have the time to heal and move forward. If it’s something creative (Painting, writing, dancing, singing, playing an instrument, creating a map for Doom) is better. Work on yourself, Eat what you like, listen to what you like, dress as you like, keep yourself clean, and keep in mind that is not your fault, there’s nothing wrong with you and things just happens, that’s all.
