I haven’t done this in a while, but you might want to check out the community controller configs. I had a 3rd party controller with a few buttons that steam couldn’t detect, but someone had uploaded a config that worked perfectly for it.

I loved it too. It got me out of a really long reading funk.

Sure, it’s kind of hand-wavey in parts, and the science doesn’t always make sense, but it’s just so damn fun. I thought the character of Rocky never fell into tropes, and it was great how much personality and humor we get out of him.

Weir is definitely hit or miss from novel to novel, but when he hits he knocks it out of the park.

Where do you fall on the “fur children” way of describing certain pets? I feel like this falls into a vaguely similar group of mannerisms that probably mildly infuriate a number of folks.

Sockks ,

Fur children, fur parents annoy me to no end

dirkle ,

I have a cat. He is a pet. Not a fur baby or child. I am not a cat. He’s too old to be a baby. Young cats are kittens, not babies. I also very dislike doggos and kiddos.

Not sure why I wrote all that like a four year old. Maybe because that’s how I view the intelligence level of those that feel the need to use that kind of language.

I have a cat. He’s the first cat I’d call a fur baby because he whines like a, um, fur baby.

LillianVS ,
@LillianVS@lemmy.world avatar

Admittedly, I too say it unironically. When my cat asks for cuddles, demands to be picked up and hugged. I have every right to call him a fur baby. He definitely acts like one. That and just “kid” because he is definitely a kid. It also sounds close to the ukrainian word for cat so it’s kind of perfect

Zagone ,

My wife has a 14-yr-old cat that she refers to as “my old man baby”. The cat’s mannerisms and age fit the name. That said, the phrase weirdly straddles a few categories in this discussion.

are you upset about the phrase “yuck my yum” or them trashing your food, period? I mean both are mildly infuriating to me but I’m curious

edit: added much-needed comma.

Also, I’ve only ever heard this in the context of food (hence the “yum”) but I see it’s also used for other things? Which is awful, because “yum” should absolutely never refer to anything other than food

DrQuint , (edited ) to nostupidquestions in Where did all this reddit hatred come from?

I have disliked the direction of reddit ever since they made the new interface and removed css rules from subs. It was the first time, of many, that I saw reddit take something from the community and screw it up, all just to make the website more boring. It was especially annoying in that it removed text flairs from support and marketplace subs and forced people to come up with external systems.

They did it more often. Things like Reddit Gold were not first made by reddit, did you know? The whole API thing is just the concrete slab that pulverized the camel all the way to hell. Of all the things they took or took away, taking away the app I was using since years before they even made one was just too much. I can go from passively disliking them to actively hating them.

Plus, what ideas did they actually have that was original or good? “Hey guys, we stole Facebook’s chat”. “Hey guys, we added crypto”. The community makes bots that mediate debates, convert video format or do reminders, meanwhile reddit busies itself by ruining the Relevant option on its already bad search and then fucks off while stating “eh, you fucking degenerate nerds use site:reddit.com anyways”

Turkey_Titty_city ,

reddit's whole api used to be open and any user could run scripts with a bit of php. it was incredibly fun and interesting.

I’ve dropped books for being boring, poor dialogue, incosistency, basically anything that majorly breaks my immersion. I was reading the newest book is Andrew Rowe’s Arcane Ascension series, which I had loved up this point, and got to ch. 18 where he breaks all the rules of story writing and character development to basically go on a IRL political rant. I still havent picked that book back up.

7fb2adfb45bafcc01c80 , to nostupidquestions in Where did all this reddit hatred come from?

I loved Reddit until I realized they were just going to do whatever they wanted and the community, apart from creating free content and work, didn’t matter. But the lying about discussions with the app creator was the straw that broke the camel’s back.

Suddenly they weren’t just a bully, but they were a proven lying, dishonest bully. Everything that they say going forward will be suspect, so I decided to walk away. Who knows what they’re doing with my data/content. I know what they’re telling me. I don’t know what’s true.

I deleted most of my posts from my nearly 14-year history except for a handful that I think need to stay up and a couple of others that I’m testing something on. I log in every once in a while to leave any groups that might have unlocked since I was last there and delete those posts too.

I don’t hate them. But they’ve lost my trust, and I don’t see any way to regain it.

There could have been other, better solutions. The biggest problem right now is that the only tool in Steve Huffman’s toolbox is a hammer.

ohlaph , to linux in Why is Linux so frustrating for some people?

The average person wants the iphone experience. They want the device to just work. Sometimes, in Linux, you have to install things that aren’t so straight forward and the average person has no clue how to do that.

If we want more people on Linux, we need to dumb it down a lot.

eshep ,

@leninmummy @ohlaph Yes, agreed, most folks want an appliance that "just works". Something where they have some sort of ""store"" that presents them with single-click installable stuff that again, "just works" and is intuitive to find once installed.

The answer to that though is not a general dumbing down of linux, that ruins every reason most of us have always been here. The right answer is to have a (multiple) distribution that can be easily installed by any completely technologically ignorant person and offers the simple appliance experience. It would be even better if this same distribution could be installed on any computer be it in a closet, under a desk, on a shelf, in a vehicle, or in a pocket to offer a somewhat seamless user experience. As a bonus, these different devices should offer the ability to connect/interact with each other in a simple manner from the common user's perspective.

felis_magnetus ,

Dumbed down Linux exists. It’s called Android.

eshep ,

@ohlaph @felis_magnetus Sorta what I was hinting at. Android is very close, and getting closer all the time. But it still takes quite a bit more than a bit of skill to install and make it work on something that doesn't have an explicit installer.

I'd argue that at the moment, we don't really have anything that can fill this need. I think that maybe some combination of android-style UX with a Nix-like stoutness and configurability could be the right direction.

Holzkohlen ,

ChromeOS?

desconectado ,

But that’s the thing, it’s not dumb it down, it’s better design for average user. Linux is not going get to mass adoption if fresh from install you have to run several commands to make your audio/game/camera work. Sure, it might be fixable with a single command, but your average user won’t know which, and won’t know how to search for it on Google.

Linux based OS like android got mass adopted because you don’t even need to open a shell once and your whole hardware works out of the shelf. That’s not the experience with Linux.

sbv , to nostupidquestions in How do you find (fun & interesting) accounts to to follow on Mastadon?

Mastodon isn’t really a Twitter replacement, in that there’s no recommendation algorithm, and no real notion of trending topics. You need to actively search for users you like and events you’re interested in.

It takes effort. Follow hashtags. Whenever you see someone who posts something you like, follow them, then creep on their subscriptions and follow them.
