Cataphract , to asklemmy in Do you have a form of government you invented/conceived, either as an idea or for fiction (or a favorite from someone else)? How does it work?

I had to go through the book shelf to find this one because I’ve talked about it before and wanted to share.

Arthur C. Clarke - The Songs of Distant Earth (audiobook)

The wiki unfortunately doesn’t go into details enough. Basically the plot takes place on a distant planet after the Earth has been destroyed by a supernova and the society was created by a seed ship. The officials are elected by a lottery and there’s a form of direct democracy if my memory serves me right in a passage. I wish I could expand on it more but the book is just amazing and I don’t want to spoil it to much for those who are interested. If you have the time I linked the audio book and it’s based off a former short story of his with the same title.

MonsieurArkadin , to asklemmy in What's the first movie you added to your movie watch list, but haven't gotten around to watch it yet?

Eurydice BA 2037 by Nikos Nikolaidis is the first film I added to my letterboxd watchlist. And I have not seen it yet. But it set the tone for my watchlist, which is solely a list of films that look interesting to me, that I will definitely forget the titles if I don’t put them somewhere. Anything I’ve heard of before, I leave off the list.

I really wish I had the option to completely disable the 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi radio since there are so many networks and it clutters up the list when I’m looking at it. If I could just turn it off and do five gigahertz only, my network’s list would shrink a lot and that would be a lot more helpful.

ByteMe ,
@ByteMe@lemmy.world avatar

Or 5ghz if it is unstable for example. Maybe disable is hard but avoid would be nice

cron ,

How often do you look at the wifi list? It would be more useful if we could lock one SSID to one specific band (2.4/5/6 GHz). This could help for devices that frequently switch between bands

shortwavesurfer ,

Just name network-2.4, network-5 and network-6 if you want band locking.

cron ,

Yes, that works fine if I control the wifi.

shortwavesurfer ,

Ah fair point

Frozyre , to piracy in How to get started with pirating music (mp3s)?

For the longest time, I've relied on DDL sites, blogspot sites with lots of links and Uloz. Since many of them have become rather tedious to use or just outright suck, I now use MP3Caprice. Yeah I know, some money is involved so you're paying people to pirate for you. But on the flipside, everything is relatively dirt cheap (except soundtracks and compilations, they like those enough to charge more).

Klear , to asklemmy in Do you have a form of government you invented/conceived, either as an idea or for fiction (or a favorite from someone else)? How does it work?

I had a super cynical dystopian idea. Never got around to fleshing it out, so its stability is doubtful at best, but here goes:

So a problem with democracy is that advertising is a powerful force and the candidate with more money to throw into their campaign tends to win, not to mention various forms of bribery coming into play after the elections. A ton of money is being wasted on shady behind-the-scenes deals. Lets get rid of all that and bring it into the light!

  • Get rid of elections AND politicians, since they are just middlemen. Instead create a kind of stock market for various spheres and levels of lawmaking and have megacorporations and other interested parties bid on those.
  • Money that would have been secretly funneled into politician pockets instead goes openly into the government budget.
  • Save more money on elections and government official salaries since there are none.
  • Corps that make laws that benefit consumers get to use that in their advertising. Buy from ProcLive! The company that brought you halfway decent healthcare!
  • Voting with you wallet ends up being mandatory. You don’t like that Disney took away weekends? Give your hard-earned cash to Sony next time. They promised to reduce mamdatory weekly working hours to 65!
  • Maybe sometimes a local citizen initiative manages to raise enough money to get governmental powers in a small town or something. I mean, probably not, but you gotta give people some hope, right?

@the16bitgamer@lemmy.world avatar

This is how switched, though I’d recommend properly platform agnostic software (Windows, Mac, and Linux support) since if you don’t find Linux proper works for your workflow, you could switch to a Mac.

Another thing which helped me was switching my Laptop first before my Desktop since if I had problems (which I did) I could loose my laptop and not worry about data loss.

As of now, I am 2 year with Linux on my laptop and 6 months on my desktop with no noticeable difference between my Windows experience and Linux.

BellyPurpledGerbil , to selfhosted in I'm at a loss on what server to buy

I’m reusing a blade server I managed to snag from a company I worked for in 2008. It’s perfect as a media server for friends and family. It is only recently degrading slightly but hey, it lasted a long time!

Point is you can use almost anything. Do your homework on compatible parts and make what you can afford
