I think that is a problem with the current back-end version of Lemmy (0.17.4). I belivie that this is fixed in 0.18.0, but Lemmy.world has not been able to upgrade to it, as it is, presumably, badly optimized for larger Lemmy instances such as Lemmy.world.

sorchist , to technology in What search engine do you use?

I've been using DuckDuckGo since, at least 2010, maybe earlier. If its results aren't up to snuff, I'm not aware of that because they're what I'm used to. I fall through to Google ( !g) if I think there might be more out there. The bang commands are so good. I use DDG as my main search in my search bar and then I can use the bang commands to get to whatever specialized search I want from there. It's a meta-search-engine.

I fell in love with Submerged when I played it. It's an exploration game set in a flooded city, where you play a young girl looking for supplies for her injured brother. Lots of navigating between buildings in a little boat, climbing around, and taking in the scenery. Incredibly relaxing to play.

Your best bet is probably WebM with H264 video.

If you are looking forward AV1 is probably the best option but many current devices are still lacking hardware decoding. H265 is very widely supported for hardware decoding but some browsers don’t support it.

Doubtful, to be honest.

Most who have used 3rd Party apps have already migrated or found some other solution. Those who don’t care are still using the official app, and, to be frank, despite what everyone says, the quality content hasn’t decreased by that much.

It’s still half Twitter and TikTok reposts, and one-fourth ‘advice subs’ (creative writing), like it’s been for several years before this debacle.

Hell, maybe this is a good thing in some ways, where that kind of content can hopefully fall by the wayside over here, instead of choking communities out like it does in Reddit. (I have over 50 popular subreddits on Boost filtered out to avoid this stuff, and it’s still not enough to get rid of all of it)

I've been lookin at some block lists just earlier today. I have to fess that some instances' block lists make me uncomfortable.

spiritedpause OP ,

Ah didn't even notice it at the bottom, good catch!

What makes those block lists uncomfortable for you, genuinely curious?

WhoRoger ,
@WhoRoger@lemmy.world avatar

First, because some instance's block list indicates unwillingness to see anything beyond their little world.

Second, because in some (only only some) blocklists, there are links to some actual shitty people who I wouldn't think actually have the capacity to run a server.

In the last few days there's been quite a fuss about some instances storing insulting jokes and whatnot, but maaaan that's honestly nothing compared to what else is out there.

@Thekingoflorda@lemmy.world avatar

Does this work? (if yes, I used the link markdown thingy).

cerevant , (edited )

No. This is what I'm seeing your link as:

https://lemmy.world/post/lemmy.world/c/[email protected]

First, /post doesn't work. The FQDN is:

https://lemmy.world/c/[email protected]

However, that will always take you to the lemmy.world website, which if you are a user of lemmy.one (for example) you don't want - you won't be able to comment or post there. If you use a relative path:

/c/[email protected]

It tells the browser to go to that location on whatever server you are currently on. As noted elsewhere, this doesn't work on kbin because they chose to use /m instead of /c. I expect that one or both of Lemmy & Kbin will automatically convert URLs in the future, and will ultimately support the [email protected] form.

edit: Note that the "@lemmy.world" is optional when you are on lemmy.world, but it is the part that will get you to the right place if you use the link on another instance.

jeena , to askscience in How is the moon tidally locked?
@jeena@jemmy.jeena.net avatar

It’s not some force keeping them the same, it’s no force changes the speed of the moon. From my limited understanding the moon was created when a smaller planet crashed into the earth:

https://jemmy.jeena.net/pictrs/image/7b9f18c1-f57e-4b10-8e23-c5fbab98d38d.jpeg

They both got the same momentum, therefor they started rotating at the same speed, once per day.

There is nothing out there which would be able to change the speed of the rotation of the moon. There is also nothing which would change the speed of the rotation of the earth. Therefor they keep spinning at the same speed.

Hypersapien OP ,

Other people have explained it, and the same thing happens with other moons in the solar system, including some orbiting gas giants where your explanation couldn’t have worked.

The Earth’s gravitational field elongates the moon slightly, and an elongated satellite tends more to stabilize its rotation with the longer diameter fixed to point at the center of its orbit.

Woozy ,

The moon rotates about once every 28ish days, the same as it’s orbit. That’s what being tidally locked means.

Doesn't look like a bot unless I'm missing something. Kind of a werid thing to say as a mod when it would probably be a better question to ask in private with other mods.

Penguincoder ,

Was only a joke due to the nature of the post and the username being aligned; not an intentional slight.

But it would also be better that you don't get offended for others. Let them say what they want to say if they need to.

Dankenstein ,

Did I say I was offended or that what you said was intentionally an insult or are you just assuming I did?

alyaza ,
@alyaza@beehaw.org avatar

just to be clear: there's no way to turn off mod plates (it is very annoying), so unless it's contextually clear we're speaking in mod/admin contexts you should generally assume we are not doing so and are using the site like you. i think this is the issue we're running into here

Dankenstein ,

Okay but is this level of aggression necessary for what is a reasonable concern? If you could provide this explanation, why couldn't the moderator I responded to have provided it?

My concern is that, like Reddit, these kinds of things can be misconstrued simply because of the moderator symbol and that it is not conducive to an inclusive environment.

alyaza ,
@alyaza@beehaw.org avatar

Okay but is this level of aggression necessary for what is a reasonable concern? If you could provide this explanation, why couldn’t the moderator I responded to have provided it?

i don't think you're going to get a satisfactory answer from me here, because i wouldn't really consider the response you got unusually aggressive and i don't disagree with Odo's point as a general rule. in any case: from my perspective this is an interpersonal user dispute and not a big deal and i don't see why i need to continue to intervene here past this reply. i'm only intervening at all because i want to clarify that we have literally no control over whether the mod/admin plate displays, and that accordingly users are going to have to be a bit conscientious of the context we say things in until we can toggle it or whatever.

Dankenstein ,

Okay, thank you for clarifying, I'm sure you're busy so it means a lot that you replied at all.

realChem ,
@realChem@beehaw.org avatar

I'll hop on just to add: the little plate that says "mod" can't be turned off, but for us community moderators we can toggle a little shield icon when we're trying to speak with the "mod voice." We can only do it in our communities, but (I think) the admin team is by default modded in every community and should be able to toggle that shield wherever they are.

So if you see the shield icon next to the name, that was intentionally toggled on to show they're trying to speak as a mod and not just a community member. If you only see the little "mod" nameplate you can probably assume they're just talking as a member of the community (unless context makes it obvious that they just forgot to turn on the shield).

Edit: Here's an example of how the shield icon looks to me from one of my posts; I'm on mobile with the darkly theme so it probably looks different to you unless you're also on mobile, but hopefully still a useful example:

a screenshot showing the mod shield next to my username

Dankenstein ,

To respond to your edit, I do not see a mod symbol next to your name. Using Jerboa.

realChem ,
@realChem@beehaw.org avatar

Yeah that makes sense, I'm not a mod in this community. If you go to one of my comments on /c/science it should display I think (although it's been a bit since I tried using Jerboa). Some of my comments there have the shield, some don't (and actually I just realized the mod nameplate doesn't render in the mobile web UI, but does on desktop... curious)

Dankenstein ,

Well, it does make sense that UI is a bit inconsistent, especially after alyaza brought the whole mod icon thing to my attention. Not like this is a unified, centralized platform.

CoderKat ,

The heck? I didn't get it at first, but I looked at this in a Lemmy instance and the OP name is different? On kbin, OP is xtremeownage. But on the original instance, their username somehow shows up as HTTP_404_NotFound, but still links as xtremeownage.

Does Lemmy have some sorta different display name vs username thing?

realChem ,
@realChem@beehaw.org avatar

Their actual username is xtremeownage, which is why it still links that way, but lemmy lets users set a display name that's different from their username (in this case, HTTP_404_NotFound). Sounds like kbin doesn't respect lemmy display name settings.

Donut County is only $3.89. It’s a short, funny, cute puzzle game where you make everything fall in a hole. Really good.

Digimon Story Cyber Sleuth is $12.49 and a much better 80hr RPG then it has any right to be. And I never even touched the second game in the collection!

ElectroVagrant , to nostupidquestions in What do I do with the !community@instance links?

You want to go to the search bar at the top and search NoStupidQuestions then limit to communities/local, at least for communities on your instance.

You can also search !NoStupidQuestions from there and it should work, but you have to give it a second to show the search results. A weird, silly issue is that if you try to search from the communities page, it automatically narrows your search to communities, and for whatever reason that doesn't recognize the !NoStupidQuestions style nor urls from what I've found.

You have to switch the search settings to search all for it to recognize either of those styles.

marcos OP ,

I'm interested on how I search for specific communities in other instances.

I guess my question could have been more clear on that.

ElectroVagrant ,

Similar idea as what I wrote, but instead of limiting to communities/local, you leave both as All when using the search bar at the top. For specific remote communities, if someone on your instance has searched for them before, then you may just need to search as [email protected], for example: [email protected].

If someone on your instance hasn't searched for the community yet, then you would need to copy the url for the community into the search (with it set to all both in type and scope) and do it that way, for example: https://lemmy.ml/c/asklemmy

Unfortunately, to know of these at all, you typically have to go to the remote instance itself and look through the communities there are on their community page, or someone from a remote instance has to post to a community in your instance telling you about them. Otherwise unless someone else in your instance has done so & subscribed to them, I don't think they'll show up in the all feed of your instance.

I may be mistaken on this last part, but that's how the community connections work to the best of my understanding.

Kethal , to fediverse in How do I deal with "fractured" communities?

What about all of the other technology communities? Forums, Web sites, chat rooms, books, magazines, local clubs? We need a way to clump them all together and subscribe to them all at once.
