sugar_in_your_tea , (edited ) to selfhosted in Recommendations for running VMs on a headless server?

I’ve heard good things about Proxmox, but I have no direct experience with it. That would be a separate box that manages the VMs and everything, and it has a remote GUI option (webpage I think?).

If you want something on an existing box, just use KVM directly, or a simple frontend like GNOME boxes. I don’t know about remote configuration, but once it’s set up, do you really need to check in on things remotely? KVM will do hardware acceleration (definitely CPU acceleration, GPU if you configure it properly), and it has no GUI by default.

BearOfaTime ,

It uses some form of VNC (forget the name). Performance is fine for the VMs for non-video stuff.

You can run whatever you want inside a VM too.

lud ,

No VNC

One time I was playing modded Skyrim when it froze/crashed at the loading screen

So I summon task manager, it hides behind the frozen game. I alt+tab and start blind keying to Skyrim to end it, been here hundreds of times, but nothing happens and the Skyrim world music STARTS???!!!

ALT+TAB to see TM and Skyrim both reporting non-responsive. Tab to Skyrim and press w, clearly hear character moving and reacting to my input

Try again to end process via ALT+F4, No dice. Try via TM, still unresponsive

I had to reboot my PC with a hard power button press that time and I still don’t fully understand what the FUCK happened

Snowpix ,
@Snowpix@lemmy.ca avatar

New Vegas does the same thing, hiding Task Manager behind itself when it crashes. I found a workaround by using Ctrl+Alt+Del, clicking to make the cursor appear, and then pressing the Windows key which makes the taskbar appear. Then the game window can be closed from the taskbar.

I hear what I say and it feels unpleasant.
Also, I don’t like adding senseless* words in my speech.

Gotta go with wildly inappropriate Master Roshi from the original Dragon ball, dude was out of control, definitely a product of his time that wouldn’t fly today

I was struggling to find a job and my friend looked at my resume and was like, dude you need to put more bullshit there, add a bunch of stuff, even if it’s fake, no one cares, everyone does it. After so much rejection I was willing to try anything, fortunately a company hired me just around those days. But next time I’ll probably have to take his advice…

ryathal , to asklemmy in Alternatives to congress

A bit is specific, but you can probably adapt them.

  1. Bring back pork spending, it’s over all cheaper to spend 100 million on some garbage than beating people into submission to pass something.
  2. Increase number of representatives significantly, makes some things less efficient, but also massively reduces the power of lobbying, and increases the power of localized activism.
  3. Limit length of allowed legislation per vote. Smaller more focused bills are ultimately better than sweeping legislation that attempts to address everything. More votes also makes working together easier with lower stakes and more opportunities to collaborate.

I say go with proxmox on the n100 (I use it), there are alternatives kvm/QEMU managers that I heard good things about as well (namely Incus github.com/lxc/incus)

HubertManne , to programmer_humor in Task estimation

this is my number one thing I hate. So we are going to be converting over one system to another and you have no ideas what issues will pop up. give an estimation on the project. or like estimation onf fixing a bug or doing something you think the software can do but your not real sure till you look into it.

Blackmist , to games in Gacha games are out of control. Gambling shouldn't be so widespread

Quite a few years ago now I went to my nan’s house for Christmas.

My cousin, I think he was about 13, had got a £50 Steam voucher for some games. Him and my other cousin who was a couple of year older went to Steam, swapped the voucher for something, and then took that to a gambling site. I don’t know if they’re still a thing. It was something to do with Counter Strike drops I think. Heavily advertised by YouTubers who ran them, with a bunch of videos showing them winning. The sort of thing they’d be sent to prison for in any right thinking society.

They took that £50, put it in, and clicked. The younger one went “what now?” and the older one just went “oh, nothing. It’s gone.” A couple of games worth of money, gone. For nothing.

He looked like he was about to cry, and only didn’t because he was going through that acting tough phase.

He’s an accountant now, and plays crown green bowling. I like to think that was a relatively cheap lesson in why not to fuck around with gambling.

barsquid ,

That’s so devastating. I feel awful when kids are let down like that.

derpgon , (edited )

At least that lesson cost mere £50 and not thousands of pounds if he won and wanted to chase that dopamine hit of winning.

@ulterno@lemmy.kde.social avatar

Gatekeeping the word “software” here?
Here’s something not in the AUR. Tested on arch

cm0002 ,

Clearly we need an Arch version of rule 34 and rule 35

Rule 34a: If linux software exists, it’s in the AUR. No exceptions.

Rule 35a: If linux software is not in the AUR, it will be made available in the AUR.

ulterno , (edited )
@ulterno@lemmy.kde.social avatar

I don’t intend on pushing that one to the AUR. It’s not worth it.
Maybe I’ll make an AppImage at most.

I don’t know any formal requirements for it being on AUR, but I just feel like this one does not fit there.

cm0002 ,

Sorry, I’ve already posted the new internet rules and they took immediate effect, I’ll have to report this incident to…the council.

InverseParallax ,
puppycat ,

i use arch based btw (I love my Manjaro and it’s AUR support) :>

hperrin ,

My software, QuickDAV, is not in the AUR. It’s open source, and I release it only as an AppImage, because I am lazy.

folkrav ,

I guess we should have added the word “notable”

I’m terribly sorry, you left the door wide open ;)

I’m curious, what makes AppImage a good choice for the lazy developer? Is it easier to create?
