I would add one more thing: invest in a process for verifying that your backups are working. Like a test system that is occasionally restored to from backups.
Let’s say what you care about most is photos. You will want to store them locally on a computer somewhere (one copy) and offsite somewhere (second copy). So all you need to do is figure out one more local or offsite location for your third copy. Offsite is probably best but is more expensive. I would encrypt the data and then store on the cloud for my main offsite backup. This way your data is private so it doesn’t matter that it is stored in someone else’s server.
I am personally a fan of Borg backup because you can do incremental backups with a retention policy (like Macs’ Time Machine), the archive is deduped, and the archive can be encrypted.
Consider this option:
Your data raw on a server/computer in your home.
An encrypted, deduped archive on that sane computer.
That archive regularly copied to a second device (ideally another medium) and synchronized to a cloud file storage system.
A backup restoration test process that takes the backups and shows that they restores important files, the right number, size, etc.
If disaster strikes and all your local copies are toast, this strategy ensures you don’t lose important data. Regular restore testing ensures the remote copy is valid. If you have two cloyd copies, you are protected against one of the providers screwing up and removing data without you knowing and fixing it.
“Can’t live without” is an overstatement, but here are mine:
Kvaesitso, search focused android launcher. I used to really like nova launcher’s local search and navigated my phone mostly using that. But once gensture navigation became a thing I had to stop using nova and replicate the experience in Samsung launcher with various local search apps that were lacking in comparison. Tried to go back a couple times once gestures with 3rd party launchers got better but found my old setup still too ugly and sluggish to go back to. Recently I randomly came across Kvaesitso on fdroid and it was everything I ever wanted out of a launcher.
Amberol music player. Not the ideal music player I’d like but at least it’s not Elisa.
Kid3, audio file tag editor. It has much better workflow/automation than mp3tag that I used in windows, and it seems if you spend some effort on it you could add more automation to make it even better.
because when this was originally uploaded on their website it would play a slightly different version every time you opened the page. So you’d laugh and show your friends, so then even if your (allegedly) stoner ass hadn’t gotten tripped out the first time, while they’re watching it and laughing you’d start sweating.
Second honorable mention to “Is The Government Spying on Schizophrenics Enough?” But I’m honestly still not sure that one’s totally okay, even if I still laugh every single time I watch it. I’m not that type of mentally ill but have had people close to me who struggle enough with it and the very nature of the disorder is such that even though I laugh I’ve always at the same time felt it treads very much on the line.
Although not exactly what you are looking for (ie custom counters on the landing page), you can view counters you are after on another page under ‘Long-term Data > Query Log’
Man literally is a suspected child rapist, yet the supposed anti-groomers would personally offer him their infant children to rape before they ever even dreamed of applying any standards to him.
It’s the logical conclusion of their association based morality. Don could actually murder someone on 5th avenue and the right would never give an inch on it because he’s their bastard and they’ll take their bastards over an outsider’s angels every day of the week.
They don’t believe it’s evil for satanists to run a soup kitchen because they suspect an ulterior motive, they believe it’s evil because the satanists are evil so everything they do is evil because nothing an evil person does is ever a good thing. Same time, one of their own could be caught hacking school children to death with a machete and they’ll go to the extent of bashing their head into a wall until they forget their own now murdered children because he’s one of their own and “we don’t need outsiders to tell us how to handle our issues.”
Seconding this. Legitimately better than Google photos in a lot of ways, even if you don’t care about the data ownership aspect. If you’ve ever been annoyed at how Google Photos handles face detection / grouping, you’ll love Immich.
As I see it, the difference is that we now have capable game engines freely available. Indie studios can, for the most part, offer the same quality of gameplay. AAA studios can only really differentiate themselves by how much content they shove into a game.
In particular, this also somewhat limits creativity of AAA games. In order to shove tons of content into there, the player character has to be a human, the gameplay has to involve an open world, there has to be a quest system etc…
