It's interesting to read the comments, as there are people who are like

I sometimes don't return the cart and I attest myself to not be a bad person. Therfore the test is bullshit.

But then they behave like a dick in the comments; showing involuntarily that the test is a good metric.

So I think even a post about this test works like the test on a more meta level.

tuckerm , to asklemmy in Is there a place I can give review/rating to any random object or service?

I don't know, unfortunately. This reminded me that I used to occasionally read product reviews on epinions.com, which was apparently was taken offline in 2018. It was basically what you're describing. Another proprietary website bites the dust and loses all content. :(

I heard about neodb.social recently, which is for entertainment media and is popular in China (although you can post in any language). Seems like we need something like that, but without specific product types in mind.

udon , (edited ) to linuxmemes in I like both, but usually prefer Ubuntu

Ubuntu’s role in the ecosystem is important. They are good at first luring people into using linux. Then the users get pissed off of Ubuntu, because of Snap, ads, or whatever random crap they know from Windows. Finally, they move on to better options, be it Arch, Debian, or Puppy. Ubuntu ensures they don’t all stick to the same

Dark_Dragon ,

Don’t forget mint, i started linux journey 2 months back and it’s going great with few mishaps.

Aww mint, you never forget your first, it’s a bit mundane for me now, these days if it hasn’t taken of its desktop and said sudo me harder daddy 3 seconds after It posts I move on to the next young model.

Don’t worry, you’ll return to it after almost decade of distro hopping and wanting for your pc to just work

whereisk ,

I don’t mind Ubuntu server, though you’re right you need to clean it up a bit by uninstalling snap and killing the login ad of managed k8s, the LTS versions have been quite consistently easy to deal with and stable, but then again so has Debian.

Tilix is the true goat of all - the only issue is that without the login shell, it can’t remember the previous directory, because of some issue with vte.sh.

Yeah I didn’t see that yesterday. But that’s how the internet is. To be fair, I’m pretty online but I somehow managed to miss the “John Cena doesn’t exist” joke since always so when it started showing up all over a vid I saw, I got really confused. I still don’t know where the hell that one came from, but I also don’t give a fuck about John Cena so.

I tried warp but it was actually laggy and slow. Also I don’t like the account idea, but I was willing to let it slide if they built a much better terminal than what we have.

They didn’t.

Ubuntu supports a wider range of devices than Debian? Since when? I was under the impression that Debian supported all or nearly all architectures the Linux kernel supports, Ubuntu only a few popular ones?

jabjoe ,
@jabjoe@feddit.uk avatar

Yer it’s nonsense. The first device I switched from Ubuntu to Debian on was the SheevaPlug because Ubuntu dropped support for it. Debian still supports it now well over a decade later.

RecluseRamble ,

Maybe they meant of the box. You have to add additional repos to get non-free drivers installed on Debian or install them manually.

Thanks, that’s good to know. I wasn’t up-to-date since I currently don’t run a Debian machine.

That means that Google does not have correct data on bike lanes.

masterspace , to askscience in Are we any closer to having an Iron Man suit? If so why or why not? Or is it just fiction?

In terms of actually building something close to the completeness of an Iron Man suit? No.

A) We don’t have powerful / dense enough energy sources. Ironman is powered by a fictional Arc reactor because we have no power source that small that can produce that much power.

B) We don’t have any quiet forms of airborne propulsion. You kind of hear Ironman’s jets sometimes, but not really, and in reality all our jets / fans that can produce enough thrust to lift a person are way louder.

C) Any material strong enough to actually be protective and stop bullets will also way a ton, making flight even more difficult.

D) In reality an Ironman suit wouldn’t be able to stop you from killing yourself through concussions whenever you crashed or hit anything.

That being said, there is a company building jetpacks: www.youtube.com/watch?v=suHOLFhbwsM

This guy built a DIY jetpack with arm boosters that fly to you: www.youtube.com/watch?v=vSGaCew0xh8

And Adam Savage built a bulletproof, suit out of titanium: www.youtube.com/watch?v=zC8go7wE6VU

C is probably closest to reality with light weight ceramics and so on. Though still very very far away from actual reality.

howrar , to asklemmy in Is there a place I can give review/rating to any random object or service?

Another one of the million projects in my backlog that I’ll never get to.

There’s one major problem with this kind of website that I’ve been wanting a solution for, and it’s that people often only leave reviews when they have an exceptionally bad experience. So when you see a product with lots of negative reviews, does that mean it’s actually bad? Or is it just a very popular product, so lots of people will find issues with it? I think the solution to that is some form of review pre-registration. When you buy something that’s intended to last a while, inform the review website of that purchase. Then if something goes wrong and you leave a negative review, you can see what percentage of purchases are affected.

Wahots , to asklemmy in What does this mean on Google Maps?
@Wahots@pawb.social avatar

A lot of the bike routes are mapped using car data. If you are biking on a one way street and have to turn around, maps will route you around the block (uphill) like a car, even if there’s a sidewalk you coukd bike or walk down instead.

It’s not super great for biking data, but it works. It tends to miss protected bike lanes, though.

DillyDaily ,

In Australia Google maps has issues with routing cyclists on 80km busy truck transit roads that have no bike lanes, footpaths or shoulders. You’ll regularly get stuck behind lost uber eats cyclists whose map took them through a motor vehicle only underpass.

The other day google maps decided to reroute me from a quiet, wide street with no bike lane that was otherwise perfectly safe, and tried to send me through a nightsoil alley, down a heritage stock run that was paved with cobblestones and crossed over a storm drain 4 times in a zig zag.

Yeah, “safer” because there’s no cars I guess, but not suitable for bikes at all.
