almar_quigley , to coffee in James Hoffman's AeroPress recipe is not that great

I love the entertainment factor of James but he and Lance both are held up as gods by coffee people when i think a lot of what they produce, especially their “scientific” experiments, are questionable at best.

In roasting we have a similar problem with Scott Rao who most professional roasters think is a fool.

huginn ,

I think Hoffman is a great starting point for people going from a cup of Dunkin every morning to something more interesting (and drinkable).

almar_quigley ,

Agreed. And he’s legitimately entertaining. Lance on the other hand….is a tool of the highest order and a pseudointellectual.

Rope or really any cordage. Can’t begin to tell you how handy learning 7-10ish knots has come, plus lashings

sylver_dragon ,

I was always terrible with knots growing up. My father spent far too much time trying to teach me a basic trucker’s hitch and sadly never got to see me really “get it”. Then, when my own son was in Cub Scouts and supposed to learn some basic knots, something just clicked in my mind and I took an interest. The bowline was the gateway knot for me and learning that led me to finally apply myself to the trucker’s hitch. Just such a useful pair for tying up a load. I can understand why my father really wanted me to learn it.

Now, I keep a length of paracord on my desk and will fiddle with it, practicing knots whenever I’m doing something that leaves my hands free. And ya, having a basic set of knots down is just damned handy.

Extrasvhx9he , (edited )

Thats a great story it’s amazing how sometimes things just resurface and click after years. I’m genuinely happy that I’m not the only one that fiddles around with paracord. I get a lot of looks from family because of it, haha. Think it was either the sheet bend or square knot that got me into this.

Sometime I feel that research is just a bunch of guys trying to sell useless stuff (myself included).

Droggelbecher ,

A bit of a more serious comment on that: knowledge is never useless. Many, maybe most, researchers agree with that. It’s why we do what we do. Publishers and sources of funding (be they third party or governmental), however, disagree. So we have to sell them on the importance of our research this way.

ekky ,

“Knowledge is never useless”

Going on a tangent here: While I fully agree with the above, there is an amount of knowledge after which fact checking becomes bothersome, and some people just skip fact checking overall. One could argue that, while knowledge is never useless, unchecked knowledge might become bothersome or dangerous.

See flatearthers, scientology, etc. for extreme examples.

But nobody thought to look for some toes sticking out of a forest.

bjornsno , to linux in New terminal apps: Warp and Wave

Have you tried kitty? It’s seriously nice if you can live with the occasional “oh no I sshed to a server that doesn’t have the correct terminfo files and now none of the normal terminal navigation features work”

flashgnash ,

I use kitty as my term, I am a little jealous of some of the warp features though.

Wave has some cool features too though feels very clunky and busy ui

Is OpenRC meant to be faster than systemD as a process system? I’ve been thinking of spinning up some non systemD distros like Artix on a VM on a mini DELL tinbox.

I will say though, I am not an advanced Linux user as the distros I’ve used were :

Ubuntu Endeavour OS SpiralLinux (Easy Mode Debian)

Would I need to make configurations in openrc or can it just run without messing with it like systemD?

Thank you

I like to just be the crazier one. Flat earth? You still believe in an earth, you silly goose egg.

The sun revolves around the earth just like the moon.

I fondly remember reading a comment in /r/conspiracy on a post claiming a geologic seismic weapon brought down the towers.

It just tore into the claims, citing all the reasons this was preposterous bordering on bat shit crazy.

And then said “and your theory doesn’t address the thermite residue” going on to reiterate their wild theory.

Was very much a “don’t name your gods” moment that summed up the sub - a lot of people in agreement that the truth was out there, but bitterly divided as to what it might actually be.

As long as they only focused on generic memes of “do your own research” and “you aren’t being told the truth” they were all on the same page. But as soon as they started naming their own truths, it was every theorist for themselves.
