NeoNachtwaechter , to technology in What is your favorite web browser? (Windows, MacOS, Linux, etc.)

There is no favorite. There is only the lesser of several evils, and usually it changes after a few years.

actually ,

Every browser I use causes me to feel some negative reaction

AlternateRoute ,

Ya basically the one that works on the most sites while also not being a PITA.

Being older than the internet and having used mosaic, Netscape navigator, IE, Firefox, Chrome, several short lived mobile browsers and tried Opera a few times. Can’t say I have a favourite as any browser I like that becomes popular also tends to become bloated and slow over time.

mercano , to asklemmy in What were or are your thoughts on the US Pres. Debate?
@mercano@lemmy.world avatar

It didn’t matter what the question was, Trump kept turning it back to immigration. He’s only got one talking point, and it’s based on fear of the other.

I read once that the Mongolian warriors would place raw meat under their saddles and after riding all day would then consume it. Now I’m thinking that’s not so far fetched.

finitebanjo , to science_memes in Slapping Chicken

To be clear, the slapping would have to be done in one single second to account for heat loss to environment.

Buddahriffic ,

What if you wrap it in a blanket?

finitebanjo , (edited )

It’s expected there will be some heat loss over time in any scenario, I’m just explaining that the exact numbers to reach 200C chicken (way overcooked) in this very specific example only work if it happens near instantly.

You can still cook it over time, easily, just with different numbers than this example.

lemming ,

I didn’t check the calculation, but I guess it assumes perfect conversion of motion to heat. But it’s good to know that if you can get a perfectly static chicken, you can hypersonic-slap it cooked.

RememberTheApollo_ , to til in TIL over 500'000 German prisoners of war died in forced labour camps, after the German surrender, while detained in the Soviet Union. With the latest survivors only being released a decade later.

If you read Enemy At The Gates: The Battle for Stalingrad by W. Craig, the closing chapters discuss what happened to the Germans at the tail end of their Eastward Campaigns, and also discussed the Russian side of the battle. Also just a really good book for showing the horrors of war. The number of lives lost was absolutely crazy, and plenty of POWs were taken that were executed, starved, or died of many other causes after their capture due to brutal mistreatment. More senior officers were kept alive and turned into propaganda pieces by the Russians.

brownmustardminion , to linux in Noob Question Thread: Ask Any Questions About Linux!

I’m familiar with Proxmox, virtualbox, and KVM/KVM manager.

If I want to set up a PC to virtualize multiple operating systems, but with the feel of a multiboot system, what virtualization software would you suggest?

My goal is for the closest I can get to a multiboot system (windows, Debian, fedora) but virtualized so I can make snapshots. It should feel like I’m on baremetal when inside the VM.

Virtualbox is clunky with lots of pesky UI cluttering the screen and Proxmox doesn’t seem great for this use case.

Woodstock , to coffee in How much do y'all spend on coffee a month?

£30-£40 for me. Currently working my way through local roaster recommendations from another thread but it’s taking a while because I order in 1kg packs.

Usually go for two americanos per day with a double shot in each one.
