My guess is that it may not be factoring traffic conditions for bicycle directions

Fitik , (edited ) to fediverse in Mbin instances
@Fitik@fedia.io avatar

There's a list on the Mbin's website, I'm surprised it wasn't mentioned yet

https://joinmbin.org/servers

I can recommend these instances:

  • fedia.io (It's the biggest one, so it would be better to avoid for the decentralization)
  • kbin.earth
  • thebrainbit.org

The later two are run by mbin devs so they should be pretty good

Additionaly there's /m/AskMbin magazine, so you can ask questions there instead.

Somebody needed to share it 🤭

Alternatively, setup your own instance is my best advice. If you have some technical skills to setup one. That would help decentralizing the most of course. If you need to help. Where are happy to help.

matcha_addict ,

Is there a still a concern for self hosters of public instances regarding CSAM content? And if so, any guidance on how to mitigate it?

I am very interested in self hosting, but I am worried of its legal repercussions, especially since I am an immigrant in the country where I love and afraid to get in any legal trouble.

Trainguyrom ,

The EFF had a handy explainer a couple of years ago on basically that subject:

eff.org/…/user-generated-content-and-fediverse-le…

Child Sexual Abuse Material (CSAM): Service providers are required to report any CSAM on their servers to the CyberTipline operated by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC), a private, nonprofit organization established by the U.S. Congress, and can be criminally prosecuted for knowingly facilitating its distribution. NCMEC shares those reports with law enforcement. However, you are not required to affirmatively monitor your instance for CSAM.

By my understanding, you don’t have to setup proactive monitoring for CSAM being federated in, but if you specifically spot CSAM or it is reported to you then you are legally obligated to report it

Have to say, I get that this is unpaid and great volunteering, but that website has pretty bad contrast. Sorry.

I'm the one who made the website. Do you think if we just brightened the outlines around the ui elements that that would help with the contrast?

To me, it looks fine, but if changing something made it better for other people, I'm all for it.

xantoxis , to asklemmy in What does this mean on Google Maps?

Mostly it’s just CYA for google since cycling is more dangerous than driving (due to the people driving), so there’s more surface area for them to get sued.

But yeah

  • turns and crossings that look safe on a map don’t have very much data on whether they’re actually safe, because google has a thousand times as much information about drivers than cyclists.
  • google sometimes suggests routes that can’t be traversed, legally or at all, by a bike. Same reason.
  • sometimes google suggests avoiding something a bike doesn’t actually have to worry about. This is actually the category of error I see the most: google sends you around something when you could simply walk your bike through it, or ride through it, because you’re not a car.

My aunt bought one of these when it came out and I played it all the time at our family cabin in the early 2000s. I thought it was super cool because it had a full keyboard and actual joysticks when I was only used to my GBC, PSX, and PC racing wheels/pedals.

tiredofsametab , to asklemmy in What does this mean on Google Maps?

I've seen that same warning for walking. I think it's just Google saying "good luck with that; we're not legally responsible". I think those warnings have shown up more since cars would follow the GPS with zero common sense and drive into a lake or something.

200ok ,

Good point. It does read like a liability disclaimer.

I’ve noticed that Google doesn’t always get the speed limit correct on more rural roads.

Or it can’t tell if a temporary, lowered speed sign has been posted in a construction zone, for example.

ghashul ,

Or as I’ve seen when they have got the lowered speed because of roadworks, but then keep the low speed after everything is finished. No, I think I can drive faster than 50kmh on the motorway.

Around 1kg per month. I buy Lavazza red, it tastes good and strong for £10. 40mg lisdexamfetamine washed down with a quad espresso is a good way to start the day.

unknowing8343 , to asklemmy in What does this mean on Google Maps?

It’s 100 % because they don’t really know if bikes can go on the roads it tells you. Their focus is clearly on cars, and they don’t feel comfortable in their guesses on bikes, specially considering that the risks of bad injury skyrocket if you ride somewhere where you shouldn’t.

Presi300 , to selfhosted in Would you buy "self-hosted in a box" hardware?
@Presi300@lemmy.world avatar

150$ is rather ambitious for what you are describing as a custom made low power server. Managing to build something… Anything commercial out of new, hell even refurbished parts that has enough horse power to run anything more than a pihole/DNS server at this price point would be a challenge and a half. If you’re going refurbished/2nd hand, you’re likely gonna spend half of that on just shipping the parts to you.

I believe you are vastly underestimating the price of new low end parts and vastly overestimating the capabilities and availability of old micro servers. I’d say something like this would work at a price range of around 300~400$ (and even that’s ambitious imo).

And even then, that’s a NICHE audience you’d be targeting. It would be people who don’t wanna pay subscriptions, but also don’t wanna be bothered to spend a day or 2 figuring out how to set up a simple linux box on an old computer they have. I’m not saying that audience doesn’t exist, it’s just veeeeery niche.

EliRibble OP ,

Thanks, yeah, there’s a lot of work for us to do in testing hardware and understanding what a common workload (if such a thing exists) would need.

Do you have any particular evidence that causes you to think the audience would be niche or wouldn’t want to pay subscriptions? I can understand if this is just an opinion you hold, but if there’s data or experience behind it, that would be good to know.

Fedora. Installer is a bit rubbish (being replaced soon) but it’s not difficult.

In terms of speed, stability, and being up-to-date it’s been exceptional IMO.

rebeltrouper , to linux in Goldilocks distro?

For me it was Gentoo. I am not sure what it is but for my work it just works better. Tests shows it runs faster for my work and comes with all the tools I need to compile things. I really like the package naming scheme and use flags. I also like the custom-ability of it as well. Tried arch and others but hated it. Also I think the documentation on Gentoo is insanely good.

JetpackJackson ,

My main distro is arch but I installed gentoo on a spare laptop and im really enjoying the granular control and the choices available, like if I want to use the binaries I can, or I can use a bunch of USE flags, it’s very nice. Emerge is slightly slower than pacman for me but I can live with that. I should learn to write some ebuilds though.
