ChaoticNeutralCzech , to datahoarder in Do you have any advice for digitizing VHS tapes?

Why a separate VCR for cleaning tapes? It’s enough to clean the heads AFAIK.

Also, you should definitely not use default deinterlacing techniques for the video, especially not ones built into these generic dongles. Capture it interlaced, preferrably as losslessly as possible, then use deinterlacing software where you can fine-tune the settings if you need to.

No, TBC most likely cannot be done in software, unless the video features a prominent vertical bar (such as a black border). It depends on the quality you want to reach, look closely and decide if the jitter is acceptable.

Not to be an unfunny nitpicker (I don’t know why I’m denying this, that kinda the whole point), but all iphones do have lossless audio streaming via AirPlay. I’m assuming that you specifically meant Bluetooth streaming, but then you should’ve said so. Furthermore, normal aptx isn’t high resolution, only aptx HD and aptx adaptive are. The phone does support aptx HD as well, but once again, you could’ve said so from the start (though 3 characters more or less might make a significant difference to most memes, this one certainly wouldn’t have had that problem)

As a combination cart pusher and cleaner for a supermarket, absolutely fuck anyone that doesn’t return their cart or worse, throws it into a gardenbed

Pantsofmagic ,

I used to see threads like this on reddit where people would defend the act by claiming it keeps people employed. Anyone who has worked in retail knows otherwise, but it doesn’t stop these neanderthals from existing and making their bullshit toxic arguments.

ThoranTW ,

100%

And knowing how corporate works in these sorts of places, they ain’t gonna hire/roster more people to deal with the extra work, just push the existing staff even harder so they don’t have to pay out extra hours.

The worst shit is when I see someone dumping a cart, they see me, smile and nod at me and then walk off like they haven’t just been caught being shitty.

Had a former soviet physicist back in cc. Similar idea. He made fun of students for pronouncing Greek letters wrong. Talked about detecting submarines using capacitance. Great instructor, intense, but great.

Then there’s the high school history teacher who was a Vietnam vet. Slapped a kid for joking about his story calling in artillery/strikes on bs positions(he was tired of seeing mass murders of civilians). Never got in trouble for it. Kid spent a week in detention. Also a great teacher!

Funnily enough, I’ve got a few friends who are long time iPhone users, who actually point this stuff out themselves:

“OMG! Have you seen the eye watering price of the new one?”
“Yay, I finally get stuff you’ve had for years.”

Neither party would ever consider anything else, and they both buy the new model every year. 🤷

At this point I admit that my reasons for choosing Android all those years ago no longer exist or matter, but I can’t imagine changing ecosystem either.

As a human being intrinsically tied to the fate of the Earth, you are legally required to mercilessly harass these friends for buying a new phone each year.

How the fuck can anyone justify this behavior?

@bbbhltz@beehaw.org avatar

Many have surprised me for different reasons.

The most recent that did is Alpine. I decided for some reason to install it for regular desktop use on an RPI400.

First surprise, the ISO was so small. Second surprise, everything installed so fast when I used the install scripts. Third surprise was the up-to-date repos. The final surprise was the community: it handled noob questions and complicated questions so we’ll, walked users through click by click and one command at a time. Awesome and totally an acceptable option for a desktop which is why I immediately installed it on my main laptop and used it for a number of months.

Wahots , to nostupidquestions in American tourists visiting the EU, what do you think of it?
@Wahots@pawb.social avatar

Really depends on where you go! Certain parts feel safer, other parts feel less safe (or less comfortable to walk through safely). I’m not going to name names, as I’ve only been to various countries for a bit at a time, it would be unfair to pass judgement on entire nations based off a small experience.

The public transit is usually a cut above. Some of the driving feels dangerous. The food prices are somewhat expensive, but the food is generally less UPF-laced.

The more relaxed culture around nudity is refreshing. The lack of large, wild parks is a bit disappointing (or perhaps we missed these entirely), but various nations seem to be catching on to rewilding. The history is fascinating, and europeans generally think much more long-term than Americans, but the bad blood also runs deep, which is a little worrying. I’m glad the EU keeps everyone together.

Overall, it’s fun to visit, it generally feels safe, cultured, and the transit is very great, particularly the train systems. It has it’s problems just like other places in Africa, North America, and Central America.

If I had to live in a non-english speaking country, I’d probably pick Spain. Wonderful people, great transit, a relaxed culture, and excellent food, though France and Germany give Spain a run for their money on several of these points.
